DSE: "Dock / DAB+ / FM / Internet Radio" (Stereo) $148.50 (was $199) Instore or Online

40

This product carries DSE's own brand, in a box that makes it seem larger than it is (no big issue).

Plays DAB+ / FM (RDS) / Internet Radio (as well as streamed music from your computer, over same WiFi link); charges / play its choice of Apple products' music, etc.

But if you -don't- need a line or earphone output jack or portable usage (you can't put batteries into this "little boom-box")

You can charge & play from iPod & [older] iPhone(s), don't ask me the model(s) that may work; the DSE guy didn't know, but it was made clear from its User Guide.

(Inside front cover of the 28 pp., all-English "User Guide" has a compatibility-list of ~13 Apple iPod & iPhone products).

  • Internet Radio for large number of worldwide radio stations ('dunno even roughly how many)
  • Audio to its stereo speakers: 10 Watts x 2
  • Backlit LCD screen
  • stream music from your PC (via same WiFi link)
  • 10 station presets for each RF radio mode (DAB+ & FM/RDS)
  • clock & alarm functions (with Sleep & Snooze)
  • Remote Control
  • AC/DC adapter

So, maybe it's not -too- bad a price for all that; you decide.

Dick Smith E's sales guy -insisted- that they offer NO RETURNS on any of their products.

(He showed me a card stating something like "no returns if you change your mind" (another condition was also listed, maybe "or if you find if cheaper elswhere" Go read it in your nearest DSE store, if it may affect your decision to buy.)

PS With the Android market's -very- cheap (non-pro area versions even FREE) Internet Radio app's (eg, TuneIn [Pro]) to compete with, I'm surprised that DSE's price for this (catalog # C 9886) isn't lower; perhaps the price will drop again soon?

Look, we don't get -enough- mention of "Internet Radios" around here.

This product was certainly NOT featured in any individual Deal, that I was able to find.

We don't get all that many DAB+ deals either.

So, I think this one is good to stay.

PS An Internet Radio is something that gives people a bit more insight into how new, commentary, music, etc. is done elsewhere on the planet. (Eg, compare CBC's "As It Happens" to anything in Oz.)

And anyone into Sports will be able to find lots of Sport coverage - in English - across the world.

Ok. -Point- taken but -its- a dupe.

        PS: -I'm- hungry.

  • I like DAB+ deals and internet radio deals. I skipped over that other post. A + from me.

  • No returns? What happened to their "Yep, for any reason within 7 days" policy?

Oh yeah - the "selling second-hand goods as new". Oops.

    • 'dunno… I think OfficeWorks still lets you bring things back.

Maybe DSE was getting folks buying on Friday (eg, for a weekend party) & returning goods on Monday.

(Even OfficeWorks had that kind of thing happening to them, eg, FAXes going out for the (then) 2 weeks' return-no-Q's-asked period, essentially a "Rentfree-Fortnight" risk.)

At DSE, I've seen several cases of open-box sales, with NO drop in price (ie, present buyer is expected to pay the cost of previous buyer's irresponsibility).

OfficeWorks seemed to have (then, if not now) a strict policy of deducting a % of the price if someone else had returned the item, for any reason.

  • You can return it because it doesn't match the sample that had dust and fingerprints all over it.

  • If anyone is considering this Dick Smith also have a Phillips model on special for the same price, http://dicksmith.com.au/product/AE2843/philips-dab-micro-hif… it sounded a lot better to my ears and is a bigger unit.

I still can't believe how poor the pick up of digital radio has been, I want a mini system with built in DAB+ but I can't find anything bigger than these microsystems.

    • Maybe build your own, eg, around a DAB+ equipped car radio…?

Or - if the quality is high enough - maybe even a Sangean DPR-34+ (ie, the shirt-pocket size DAB+ radio, with FM).

It's gotta sell before there'll be any better systems to sell.

Of course, DAB+ is available in other markets; so, maybe look for your mini-system in one of those, eg, via eBay.

  • I'll wait for this to drop another (say) $50 - 75, & buy 2 of them… eg, one for travel, one as a gift to folks I'm likely to be staying with for a week (so I won't have to schlepp mine along! :-)

PS There's a -lot- of excellent speakers to be heard, on some of the lesser known podcasts & Internet Radio stations from afar.

Interestingly, different stations are available on this puppy, than we've found & enjoyed on the (much cheaper, if you don't use the free version of, eg,) Android "TuneIn" app.

(Unlike the DSE C9886, "TuneIn Pro" can -Record- the content you find into MP3 files, be it from a podcast or from a streamed Internet Radio station, that "TuneIn Pro" played for you.)

  • Modes I'd make to this DSE (C 9886) box:

    a. Mods I -can- make:

a-1: Add a Line Out (maybe from the Speakers, adjusting the impedance to a typical Line Out level)

a-2: Add a telescopic vertical (or 2 arms of a V-dipole?) external antenna for FM & DAB+ reception

Alternatively, add a standard Antenna jack or (at least) 2 screw-terminals (for twin-lead to a wall or roof-mounted antenna)

a-3: Add a rechargeable internal battery (eg, 1x small 12 V DC SLA -or- 2x small 6 V DC SLA's; & maybe charging circuit that runs from the existing 12 V DC power socket; the power block is 12 V DC @ 3 Amps, ie, larger by 50% than those that run [2 TB] external HDD's, that usually need only 2 A at same voltage).

    b. Mods I -can't- make (as easily):

b-1: Make the unit Record, eg, to USB storage devices

b-2: Add a car power cable (eg, with a lighter-plug connector) so it can be used in a car
