Not bad but also sad we still haven't really gone below $20/TB yet.

I guess it's true patience takes time.

  • Are these white label Red Pro's?

    • not sure

if you're looking to shuck these, check the group buy on drives.
Even without joining the group buy and buying from the ebay seller direct, it's cheaper than this.

    • think should be HC550?

  • Great deal. Thanks for sharing!

I got one in november for $397.46 so camel must have missed that.
WD 16 TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive - USB 3.0, Black
    Sold by: Amazon UK

I'm tempted to pick this up but I need to get a decent nas and probably 3 more. I figure the higher capacity drives are very close so these should drop if you can wait. Then again who knows what kind of repercussions will come from this conflict.

    • Different product id, the UK one is listed here:
      https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08KY4P7L5

      • Do you know if there's a difference? The UK one I received has the same model number as the Page for the US one. they just didn't update it on the page.

    • I got the same deal. Only got a 10tb in my nas…

Shucked this into my pc. Didn't need to cover or remove the 3.3v pin.

not a bad deal. I personally won't be buying because i'm waiting for either a better deal or for the 18tb's to go down to a similar price per tb…..but this is still a good sign of the direction prices are going, especially as there isn't any special sale event on right now (such as black friday, boxing day, cyber monday)

Anyone know if this hdd can be used as a backup station? Thanks

    • +4

Well it's a USB hard disk, so yes.

all my family vids and photos and everything all together only 6GB for all these years. 16GB size is huge and good price too!

    • +2

I read it twice and made sure you were not replying to a thumb drive deal

I've shucked these drives many times. Just be aware that most of them aren't Red's anymore… they are White labels.
And in order to use them shucked you need to cover pin 3 with electrical tape (Google "hard drive pin 3" if you don't know).

    Terrific value drives.

    • +3

People calling them reds aren't usually being literal. They're white label drives that are rebadged reds…

just like black box that actually orange..

Still hanging out for a 12TB drive. Should have bought two of them when I had the chance.

    • Why prefer 12 over 16?

      • +1

probably to make a RAID5 or RAID6 where you need identical sized drives

      • I already have a 12TB, and just want to be able to mirror it or rsync between drives easily. I don't need more TOTAL storage, so I don't want to spend the extra money on 6TB I don't need :)

  • Sorry if this is a dumb question. Would the power plugin work with Australia? Or will that need to be purchased separately?

    • +2

You need to request one from WD support.

      Seagate provide universal adapters though.

      • +4

WD will provide the AU plug connector for free - you just have to register the drives with the serial number with them (I did this a few years back, and they actually sent me 4 power supplies, not just the AU plug connector - I had 4 drives I bought from Amazon AU via Amazon US).

  • The benchmark price per Tb is $21. So will keep waiting!! 😩

  • I know you pay import GST with these, but if I was to order 6 of these would I need to pay some extra fee when they arrive or the GST charged at checkout covers everything (being over $1000)?

    • Order them separately and have it shipped to different address/receiver names?

      • +1

I checked this, over $1000 you need to pay GST plus import fees. You can see these fees when you checkout.

So best to order sub $1000, and then a week or so later do a new order.

        • Wow didn't know this works. I remember when importing under about 1.5k meant no tax or duty.

Since then Gerry Harvey has made his two life goals to sell extended warranty on everything (I want him to open a food franchise so I can be sure my fries will last as long as I need them too!) and convincing as many people who will listen that piracy is a crime, not a service issue. Wait.. I mean that importing rather than accepting his completely fair "buy me a new yacht this week" product mark ups is to blame for every problem with failing businesses and GST is charged on purchases over $10 or something now. (He also had to change his policy to "buy me a new yacht this month" due to all the accc fines)

Still if it works it works. I know I paid GST on a single $400 external though…it was included in the price but it shows up on the invoice.
