I'd have thought that would make the pastry a bit yuck, compared to cooking in the oven. What is the reasoning?

A sausage roll is not a waffle or jaffle.

    • +1

      What is the reasoning?

      I don't know.
Why would it make the pastry bad?

      • +5

Hot sweaty pastry - damp with steam and fat..

    • +3

You could use it for desserts with short-crust pasty, but puff pastry just won't puff & give you the layers in one of these.

    • I've made pastry jaffles in a jaffle maker before and they are really good. But you're right, the texture of the pastry is completely different from that of a sausage roll. It's still crunchy, but much less flaky than pastry cooked the normal way.

  • +31

But.. you just fold the puff pastry over… That's the easiest part of making sausage rolls… Y'all got ovens, right?

    • +8

I've heard that said about air fryers too. It just an oven that sits on your kitchen bench.

      • +24

Good point. You can cook the sausage rolls in your air fryer. This K-mart junk is just next year's landfill.

        • +9

          This guy change my mind..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijcOzzIVMeU

        • It'll hit the Salvos stores first.

        • Most Anko products are junk, the lowest quality of all brands. Landfill fodder.

      • +8

Smaller and more energy efficient though (because it's smaller), with better air circulation. So a bit different from a normal oven - kinda like how a toaster oven is to an oven.

        • +1

Heaps easier to make apple pies and stuff with these.

          • +4

@Spendmore: I use my apple pie maker for apple pies.

            • +7

@Harold Halfprice: Hah well now I can make sausage rolls and apple pies! ;)
Seriously though I have a pie maker and cutting the pastry is so primitive, with this one you dump in a sheet, add filling and fold the pastry over…too easy.

              • +6

@Spendmore: Absolutely right. Recipes and procedures here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijcOzzIVMeU

                • @rl99: Works well..
Couldn't find any potato starch, so used potato flour instead.. worked fine..
Recipe isn't quite sweet enough.. will probably double up the sugar. to make it less healthy..
Had the exchange the sausage rool maker, becasue the cords, was coming loose after one cook though..

      • +1

        Well…some EVs have 1200w 240v outlets.

This rules out an oven and an air fryer.

However, should you feel like a fresh cooked sausage roll when you are stuck in traffic on the way home…this will work.

Same for the Kmart toasted cheese machine @ 750w… Welcome to the future!

      • +1

It is just a fan forced oven. Being compact it heats up in 3 mins instead of 10 like a wall oven.

    • I don't.

    • No, just a microwave

  • +1

I prefer my pastry to puff up on a sausage roll and would imagine this wouldn’t allow for that. Will save my $5 for some other bargain posted on here that I probably don’t need.

  • Thanks. This'll go nicely with my new flashlight.

    • +12

      I don't see the connection.

    • +4

      I thought you meant FLESHlight.

Then I clicked the link (in eager anticipation) and wasn't disappointed. The thumbnail actually looks like one.. 🤣

Had to click "Go to Deal" to confirm it wasn't. 😅

    • I initially read that as fleshlight.

  • +8

Not just for sausage rolls here are some good recipes to try

    https://www.taste.com.au/quick-easy/galleries/recipes-were-m…

    • +1

I like how none of the pictures are of sausage rolls actually made in it.

  • +4

Ahhh. So this is what my girlfriend is talking about when she says it's like a sausage party in here. Guess they must own one of these.

  • +2
    • +4

      It's a kids toy.

      • +2

Explains why I noticed it ..🤣

Should look at more than the price I guess…

  • +3

So it can clam 4 fat sausages?

    • Skinny and short ones too

    • Nope. Can you?

  • +1

    Any cornish pastie makers around?

  • Ok for $5 but 50hz not good enough for making assuage rolls competively.

    • +8

I prefer 100Hz, assuage tastes smoother.

      • No RGB and no USB C……No deal!

    • rolls 200 sausages per second

  • Massive wow. This looks far better than the 1990s sunbeam pie magic

  • Are you expected to use puff party with this too? Surely it wont be as flaky as the oven/airfryer

  • 2 in 1 Pie & Sausage Roll Maker for $3.50
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/2-in-1-pie--sausage-roll-ma…

Just that it's for 'little chefs'
    It's a toy 😁

  • +7

As it happens I bought this exact same sausage roll maker from KMart (online) yesterday for $15 but haven't picked it up yet.

Bought another one for $5 and will be returning the $15 one. lol

BTW, a mars/snickers bar fits exactly in the tray, apparently a mars/snickers covered in puff pastry dusted in icing sugar makes a great dessert.

    • +4

If you bought for click & collect then don't pick it up, eventually you will get refunded.

      • I've got to go to the same store anyway to pick up the other one, not sure I trust k-mart to do a refund without any intervention on my part - maybe I'm being a little unfair to them.

        • +2

I've done it because it was mentioned in the email.

          • +2

@WatchNerd: OK thanks, I'll follow your advice.

          • @WatchNerd: Neat tip, that'll be such a time saver.
            Thanks!

Do you know if it works for Target click & collect orders to get refunded too?

    • I picked up two makers yesterday. I made 8 rolls in one go just do two flips of the pastry. Faster than use air fryer. The cleaning is also fairly easy. Simply unscrew 4 screws each side to allow throughout clean. Of course if I put in less filling next time, I can further reduce cleaning works.

  • +5

The pie maker and samosa maker is also $5 each

    • Thanks heaps, now I have a $5 pie maker as well. lol

      • You can also use this sausage roll maker to make traveller pies

  • +9

This sausage roll maker is extremely underrated, in my opinion. For $5 it is an absolute bargain.

Yes it's true, you don't end up with pastry that puffs up, per the earlier comment. Instead you end up with some kind of pie/roll hybrid, in a tasty crispy shell.

I'd go so far as to say that I prefer the rolls from this machine, to the typical sausage roll.

    • Thank you for your unbiased sausage roll opinion :-)

    • +1

Never had a proper sausage roll in your life then.

The reason it's not puffing is due to not enough heat. All good sausage rolls are made in the oven, even the award winning ones.

    • Especially when its a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll

  • I prefer my pastry

    • I prefer pastry over eating the plastic on this.

  • Done

  • +1

This is the greatest day of my life.

    • I hope I can make it even better by asking if you will marry me?

  • Soon to be landfill

  • +2

We have one of these and it is frustratingly slow. Sure it's great for a snack but making dinner for the kids it's unacceptable, just roll the pastry and throw bulk lots in the oven

    • +1

How many kids do you have?

    • +4

…. It's $5. If you need to crap out a dozen sausage rolls at a time, buy three. Can't expect a small device to cook everything for an entire brood at once.

  • This seems slightly cheaper quality than the Aldi one that goes on sale right now

  • Cut to product designers
"Okay so we've shaped the metal like a pie, like a sausage roll and even like a samosa… what other shapes can we make and call them foods?"

    • Cream eclairs! …

      … B====D

    • muffin quiche cake bar tart

  • Useful as an electric griddle / hot plate?

  • $5 is perfect for jaffles in the shape of rolls

  • +1

What a bargain! Gonna grab the pie maker and sausage roll maker today :)

  • I use this to cook curry puffs sometimes and comes out good.

I have one, and it is grouse
It cooks in 22 mins and it is not sweaty at all

In a mixing bowl I put 500g of pork mince, chopped onions, and what ever else I like
Stretching the pastry is a bit fiddly & so is dishing out the meat
But my (profanity) likes licking my meat after I finish :p
I just got to be carefull not to stuff up the non stick surface taking off the sausage rolls when cooked
I then put them on a big plate with a fork in the middle so the air goes around so as to not make it sweaty

The worst part is the cleaning up, but I just drown the whole thing in the sink when finished in warm/hot soapy water
A few hours later I drain the water and put some clean water in but first off I take off the 3 screws where the power cord goes into the unit; don't loose the screws down the sink
Rinse the unit a few times in warm water as you use a cloth to remove the softened pastery & dry on the side of the sink
Finish drying on the benchtop & when completely dry, I use a big cotton ball where the junction wires are instead of that compressed white material

I hope this helps. I love my sausage rolls just as much as I love my fish & chips

    • +1

      your cat ???

      • -1

Ellie, she is nearly 10 months old.
Doesn't your (profanity) like eating meat from the mixing bowl, she also likes other foods I make; she just likes human food

Why can't I say (profanity)? I call them pussies until they are 12 months old , that is when they are cats!

    • I tried the makers yesterday but I dont notice any soften pastry left after use. Did you cook the pie for around 18 mins each time ?

      • I cook my sausage rolls for 22mins every time, I like all my food well cooked. They come out nice and crispy. I take them out str8 a3way so it does not sit there and sweat. Just be careful removing the rolls, ideally, use a wooden spatul, so you don't scratch the coating on the roll maker

I stretch my pastry just to make sure the 2 pieces mate well and thus seal well. I use my finger to remove the exces, but maybe it is the filling that oozes out. I use 500kgs pork mince, 2 or 3 onions diced, Worcestershire sauce, I think I use tomato sauce or sauce that was left over to make spag bog. I did put olives in a few times, but didn't notice the flvour much. You can put in capsicum. Put garlic mince in the bowl, you don't need an egg as it will be moist enough from the mince & w/sauce. I wish my old battered (literally), could remember what else I put in my rolls

But guess what? I found the book I purchased called 'Sausage Roll Maker. 140+ recipes to absolutely nail it'. It is only 12 bucks from K-Mart. I will open it one day, no hurry

  • +1

FYI. I looked online and it said my local store had no stock, wife wanted to go to Kmart anyway and when we were there she looked and there were a heap with $15 ticket on it. Scanned it before purchase and it came up as $5. Looking forward to making apple pies like in the video posted earlier.

  • This bloke will show you how to make sausage rolls with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3s27gM-pnw

  • Am I the only one struggle for clean it? I try to unscrew the plate for wash, it is impossible to remove with all the wire attaching.

    • the four screws are fairy easy to unscrew for cleaning. I cleaned two makers last night. If I put less filling next time, I can further reduce the cleaning works..

    • I wrote a detailed way to clean the maker, it is about 7 comments above

  • Wow! You are so brave to soak the whole thing in sink :)

    • -4

It is the best way to clean the thing I found out.
It loosens all the pastery and it turns it to a liquid and it just dilutes away in all the water.
Just rinse it off really well and then let it sit on the benchtop as you take out the 3 screws (carefull they don't go down the plug-hole)
Let it dry for a few hours then move it to the bench where it drys out over the next few days so you can get your benchtop back

Get a big ball of cottonwool to replace the soggy white matting that you threw away, and assemble the 3 screws with the cover
Everything should be dry now as it has been days
I then put it in the cupboard until I get the urge for sausage rolls again
If I want to use it quicker. I could always take the maker out to the shed and blow the whole thing dryish with my air compressor

Most households nowadays have microswitches as their fuses which switch off in a micro second, thus their name; unlike the old fuses which use a fuse wire of 10A & up
Micro switches should be manditory in all homes as they are much safer
If you electrocute yourself with a microswitch installed, they are that quick to turn off, all you feel is a tingle, then the power goes off (I know). PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

To stop a human heart takes 1/10th of an amp, homes uses 10amps MINIMUM, plenty to kill you.
      10amps times 240volts equals 2400watts
I think a microswitch costs $30-$40 each, they just replace one fuse, others you just get them hard-wired in, done by electricians; if you don't know what you are doing, don't do it. It is not like changing a washer on a tap, or hammering a nail into the wall

      • With your other comment I was puzzled about all the negative votes as you actually wrote a big review as you own this model (I love seeing people provide feedback on stuff they have actual experience with).

Then I re-read it… you are being voted down (and HOPEFULLY your posts will be hidden/removed) as your advice may very well KILL SOMEONE.

I hope you realise just how insane this is. NEVER, EVER wash an entire electrical appliance in a sink full of water.

        • Why? I let it dry for a week before I use it again; I have done this several times & I am still on this 3rd rock from the sun. If people are so stupid to use the thing wet, they are (Profanity) idiots

  • managed to grab one from Bankstown, NSW store - any click and collect i tried at almost all stores in S / SW Syd showed as 'not available' - Bankstown must have had about 30 on shelf (showing $15 label), but scanned at $5 at checkout. Same as reported above
The recipes in the booklet (and comments above) talking about using mince .. you add it raw? or need to be cooked first

For $5 cant go wrong. i'm sure with some trial and error will make some great rolls
    Thanks OP

    • +1

Raw, the maker will cook it in 22 minutes I found to be the best time.
Have a peek at 20 to see if you want it cooked more, or less next time.
Use something wooden to take them out, you don't want to scratch your new maker :p

      • thanks for that mate - all makes good sense!

        • +1

no sweat, now go and make them yummy rolls

  • After buying two of these and cooking sausage rolls last night, I can tell you why these are $5. If you put too much mixture in the sausage rolls, they leak fat and water down the side of the machine. Unfortunately the plastic exterior and the hot plate has a small gap which the juice leaks through, down into the bottom of inside the machine where there is presumably wires etc.

After cooking the rolls we turned the machine sideways and at least 50ml of oily water drains out of each machine. I am scared to turn this thing on again cause it might blow up. This is why it is $5, they probably have heaps of them returned. I'm sure if you are careful you can survive longer than a single use.
