  • Is this a special model for Costco?
It is a 875, not an 870, otherwise looks the same.

    • +1

Kind of, I haven't really seen others sell the 875, but the main difference is it comes with the Thermal Milk Jug, as opposed to a standard milk jug.

      • OK thanks - that's a handy extra.
I see that now I've looked at the pictures.

        • +1

the thermal milk jug is excellent…

          • @Archi: NICE idea with thermal jug. Here I am using an infrared thermometer to get it at 65 degrees.

Can you chuk the thermal mug in the dishwasher or is it only hand wash??

            Thanks.

            • +3

@Naigrabzo: Looks like it's only ~$25, which isn't too bad honestly.
Q&A suggests it doesn't specify, but others chuck in dishwasher.

              • @NigelTufnel: Yah. I was happy to pay the $25. I can ditch my infrared thermometer and at least calibrate this one with mine.

            • +1

@Naigrabzo: dont know, i think i have a few times and it still works.

            • +1

@Naigrabzo: Mine has regularly gone in the dishwasher for a couple of years now, no issues.

              • @PeteM: Thanks Boys. I will get myself one. Or put one on the Christmas gift list.

  • +2

Only difference is the temperature control jug, which has an integrated thermometer indicator strip, in the 875

  • +2

Thank you so much, I just bought one!

  • These are good!

  • Is this a good machine for mainly drinking long blacks and espressos?

    • +2

      Yers.

      • please educate me.
how do you specifically make long blacks?
hot water first then espresso shots or espresso shot then top-up with hot water?

        • I make mine hot water first then espresso.

    • Absolutely, it will pull a fantastic shot of espresso. A long black is just a double shot on top of hot water. This machine has a hot water spout perfect for warming your cup or water for a long black. I’ve had this machine for years and can’t talk it up enough!

      • Agree. I have the BES920 which is very similar.

    • +2

One caveat of the 53mm portafilter in the BES8xx series is that in the standard double espresso basket can fit about ~17 grams of ground coffee, which is a bit limiting if your coffee roaster has suggested brew recipes that start with 18g-22g in. You can still make the coffees to the right ratios, but in terms of volume it'll always be less than a brew out of a 58mm portafilter (BES9xx series, e61 machines etc). Don't forget to change your extraction time to suit!
eg: If the original brew recipe is 20g in / 45g out in 30 seconds, on the BES8xx the recipe would reduce by 15%: 17g in / 38g out in 25.5 seconds.

      • +2

        yes, this ^^^

I upgraded to a 58mm machine (oracle) mostly because I couldn't get the right volume of espresso for a latte. I was eventually dosing 15g in the double basket, cutting the shot a bit early (25g or so) and doing this twice to make two coffees. The pucks were soupy AF, but the shots were the right strength. However, the workflow was around 10 mins…
The oracle seems to dose aorund the 22g standard so better volume, but its much much more difficult to dial in due to limited parameter tweaks. Being able to make 2 lattes in under a minute is worth the price and quirks though.

        • … and if you get a naked 58mm portafilter you can put up to a 26g VST/IMS filter basket in :)

      • Does it? My BES8XX easily fits 18-20g, should I not be dosing as much?

        • If I can see the impression of the shower screen and screw on the coffee puck after I brew then I would count that as overfilled.
Not providing enough room for the puck to expand during preinfusion affects the brew outcome as the puck compacts on itself and can cause its own problems (channeling). You can chuck a 5c piece on top of the spent puck and reinsert the portafilter to check how close the puck is to the shower screen.

I dialled in some St Ali Orthodox this morning and it worked well at 17.0g in / 35g out in 28 seconds at grinder setting 2 fwiw.

      • 53mm is totally fine for 18-20g, but you need to dial in indeed.

Gaggia Classic for a similar price would be a better machine, caveat being you would need a separate grinder. It would also last you much, much longer than any Breville, and have room for improvement via mods if you really get into it.

On the other hand, the grinder on these is mediocre at best, so even with this machine I wouldn't want to use the built-in grinder unless you want the absolute simplest possible way of making an espresso, and really aren't too fussy about the results. I would even get a Bambino + separate grinder (Breville Smart Grinder goes on sale regularly and is OK) over this, unless space is an issue.

      • second for the GCP over this

      • Thanks. I just saw the Gaggia for $669 at costco. So you're saying it makes a much better coffee than the Breville? I do have a separate KRUPPS grinder that seems to work OK with my Bialetti. Was hopping to have one machine that does all but if the Gaggia is way better, I may have to consider it. I'm very new to these types of machines and want to get one for the new house.

        • It depends. The Gaggia has the ability to make better, more tailored coffee - if you're happy to spend some time to learn.

The pressurised baskets on both machines will churn out similar results - but you shouldn't be using them anyway.

The grinder on the Breville is very limiting beyond use with the pressurised basket, but your Krups grinder might be too - depends how good it is at grinding fine for espresso.

The Breville is a relatively cheaply made appliance, which typically lasts 3-4 years - sometimes more, sometimes less. The Gaggia is a much more well built, robust machine which should easily last double that, probably even more.

    Stainless Steel same price

    • +1

Does anyone know if the non-steel-colour models are also made of stainless steel?

I once saw Cranberry Red or Black and seemed plasticky.

      • +1

Yes, they are steel with a crappy paint layer that does chip (particularly on the drip/cup tray front). The drip tray panel is non-painted stainless steel. The top of the coloured machines (cup warmer tray) is fully plastic.

  • This or the EM5300 for the coffee noob?

    • This one 100%

    • +2

I own both. Bought the Sunbeam for my offspring.
They both can make great coffees if you take the care.
Advantages in both, LED lighting in Sunbeam dosing area and bigger 58mm basket. Far cheaper too.
But the Breville "feels" better and is programmable for dose size.

      • thanks! yep i'm trying to justify the $200 gap haha

      • I have used both, have the sunbeam. Certainly less reliable long term, if you get more than 2 years out of it you are doing well. But it does the job, I have been pumping out 4 lattes a day every day for a bit over a year on the one I have no problems. I had one before that that gave up the ghost after about 2.5 years of similar treatment.

      • Genuine question: so EM5300 doesn't dose, ie. it keeps grinding until stopped? That means you need to weight your beans each time you're making a single shot.

        • Correct - manual start/stop of grinding in the Sunbeam.
And the Sunbeam has mauch more adjustment of grind size. meh.

          • @Weshouldgetsushi: That's not convenient at all, but quite educational - you learn to dose it yourself. After a lot of experiments with amoung and grinding setting, you'll eventually learn how many beans you need to chuck into the hopper each time you're preparing a single shot. And you need to learn for each type/brand of beans. And it's probably going to be different for a double shot, unless this machine is nice and consistent.

Yet I'm not sure if recommendable to "coffee noobs" from the original question.

  • I'm waiting for the oracle to pop up somewhere for a good price again 😔

    • Blue or red (pill) ? ;)

  • $599.99 in store.

  • So tempted… These are single boiler and not dual right? Does that even matter? LOL! What's the next model up to these and are they worth it?

    Thanks everyone :)

    • +1

Yes these are single boiler. Unless you have the urge to pull a shot while steaming milk it won’t make a difference. I have one of these machines and not fussed on waiting (it doesn’t take long to do either).

      • So THAT's what single boiler means! :p

So basically either pour your shots first then froth milk, or other way around.

        Cheers!

        • +1

theres a little bit of a wait time between the shot and milk too, as they both need the boiler at different temps. I think its 30-60 seconds on the bes870, but I never actually timed it in the 3 years I used one. I timed making two lattes to about 5 mins on a pre warmed machine. its the main reason I changed to an oracle, the time saving (1 min to make 2 lattes). If anything went wrong with the shot on the 870, then i'd be looking at a ten minute turnaround by the time I cleaned out the portafilter and figured out what went wrong and made it again.

  • +1

What are the chances of the pro coming up for special?

    • What's the differences between this and the pro from real world examples (not just tech specs). I'm keen to purchase a machine this week and wanted to understand the $200 odd difference between the two. Cheers!

  • Good machine for Mum but if you're looking to get into coffee at home then I'd definitely say you're better off with a Gaggia classic pro for the same price

    • I was about to…I love coffee, I really do…. But I also don't want it to be a "hobby" and I like the simplicity… I'll probably change my mind sometime in the future but this makes it really, really easy… I think this is a good machine for someone who doesn't want the fluff and fuss of a proper, entry-level set up

      • +2

I hate how snobby my original comment reads.

These are great machines for the price, and the espresso machine rabbit hole is very easy to fall into.

Please also consider second hand refurbished for an entry-level setup

        • This. I’ve picked up 2x 870s for under $250 via FB marketplace in the past 12 months. No way I’d pay $600 for one.

        • Interesting comment about secondhand. I'm usually not one to purchase anything related to food/kitchen prep appliances secondhand. Maybe I need to reconsider if I want to dabble in >$2k RRP machines.

          • +1

@SnoopX: Many coffee stores will keep a stock of second hand returned/refurbished machines and grinders to sell at a discount with a limited warranty, Jet Black Espresso in NSW is an example, there are a few in Victoria too but the names escape me currently

  • I just got this machine so still playing around with it to get the perfect espresso. What setting are others grinding their beans at, to get the 1:2 perfect ratio?

    • I use Kicco Luxuria beans and I grind on 4. I'm not an expert and I drink it with milk and sweetener so take that as you will, but that works for me. Recently bought a dosing cup too which makes life way easier, especially for setting up. I have the exact scale in the vid below too, it's great.

  • Guys my experience is this is not a reliable machine. I bought one in May 2020 didn’t start using it until Dec 2020 or Jan 2021, then two weeks ago the flow metre has stopped working - the 1 Cup or 2 Cup control malfunctioned, the water won’t stop until I press the Cup Botton again. I called up Breville and was told this machine comes with 1 Year warranty only and I had to take it to a third party repairer! Was going nowhere with that rep and had to hang up to go to an appointment. I will submit a complaint to ACCC!

    • I’ve tried resetting the program, which initially fixed the issue but now resetting does nothing
