Samsung Ultra Short Throw Projector - LSP9T $5495 (Exp), LSP7T $2995 + $5.95 Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) + Surcharge @ Mwave

160

The lowest price I have seen for LSP9T! I am getting this one. 1%/2% surcharge applies for select payment methods.

Could anyone recommend a screen? It looks like a 130" ALR screen itself would cost another $2000 at least. The total cost to own a projector is not cheap! :(

For $5.5k I'd be wanting more than a 12 month warranty!

I believe Costco is selling the Hisense triple laser version for a similar price as the 9T here. That once includes a screen and I believe Hisense provides a 5 yr warranty (could be 3).

    • ACL rights override warranty.

      • But ACL rights take longer to claim :|

        • Yeah more often than not you have to be a karen to get ACL

          • -1

@DingoBlue: And even then, fair trading isn't going to take the company to court over your 5K projector - they can only merely give a suggestion to replace (at least that's how I understand it)

            • +3

@jwu56: Forget fair trading, waste of time. Look up small claims Court, like VCAT. Been there a few times, very easy. Won all times and got costs.
Easy to argue a $5k projector should last 10 years.

@DingoBlue: Exercising your actual rights isn’t Karening.

I saw them both on display at hardlynormal. IMO, you can only tell them apart if you see them side by side.
I’d get the 7T and a screen, and still be under the price of the 9T.
Full disclosure, I ended up buying a Hisense L5

    • Is it this one? With less than $5000, you get a120" screen.
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hisense-120-4k-hdr-laser-…

      • Yes, that’s the one. I got the 100” version which is currently selling for $3,500.
Your link is the 120” version.

        • Would you go for a 100" QLED TV like this one if you could choose once again? I saw this one was on sale for less than $6000 a few weeks ago.

@xryanlee: To me, this is not a TV replacement. In a well lit room, colours will be washed out. These are better than traditional lamp projectors due to ALR screens, but not as good as TVs.
This is better suited in a dedicated media room where you can control the light.

Edit - I didn’t answer the question I’d get the TV if it’s my only screen to watch content on.

          • +1

@xryanlee: Wow 98", tempted. Will pull trigger if it's under <5k

          • @xryanlee: Yeah unless projector technology has changed much recently, you're not getting the full colour gamut and HDR won't look as good, and forget about Dolby vision.

If 100" is all you want, then you'd be mad to buy the projector for the same/similar price.

            • -1

@TEER3X: Earlier this earlier when Samsung were bundling the screens with the 7 series, it was ~4k with a 100" screen and 4.5k with a 120" screen. You are at least $2000 better off and those cheap 100" QLED TVs are nasty

I have a 7T with 120" screen Elite Screen setup. I can't go back ever.
Best TV purchase in all my career.
the 9T would have been better but overpriced at the moment.

  • Have the 7T with the 2C ALR screen that Jb hifi had as promotion last year.
    Very happy with the set-up.

    • A screen costs roughly $2000, I am thinking to purchase the 9T without a screen and see how it goes. :)

      • +1

To get the 4K resolution you need to invest in the screen.
        No point going half pregnant.

      • +1

Hey so can’t speak for these short throw projectors but I have been using a standard projector for the last 5ish years. I always thought you needed a screen until I moved into this apartment, projected straight onto a white wall and it actually looks better than the screen I was using.
Now I admit I never paid a crazy amount for one of those “good” screens but still. Definitely think it should be ok without one.

Or alternatively look at getting some projector screen paint. I remember most people in the AVS forums would say painting a screen looks better than a actual screen. So so much cheaper too.

        • +1

Hmm I actually tried with a standard projector screen but it be definitely be better than using a wall as a projector.

          • @mr chow: Yeah just from memory, it was a while ago but I think I remember the real videophiles saying it’s a waste of money getting a screen unless you get a really good one. But for the money your paying it’s almost not worth it unless your REALLY into your picture and have the absolute perfect environment for it. Eg every wall painted black, no windows ect. If you don’t then it’s not worth paying $2000 for a screen.
Just project onto a white wall or buy some projector paint and paint a screen yourself.
But as I said I could be remembering wrong, AVS forums has a lot of info about it all. Would thoroughly recommend reading about it before dropping 2k on a screen you may not actually get any benefit from.

            • @barge88: a regular projector screen (cheap) may not help if wall surface is already good at bouncing projection (depends on wall surface obviously…). UST ALR screen (expensive) is definitely worth it if the room is NOT dark.

UST (ultra short throw) projectors projects lights up and ALR (ambient light rejecting) screens are designed to catch the light below, and reject light from other directions. Therefore, if room is already dark, the alr screen will still help increase contrast but not as drastic as it's not catching as much ambient light. CLR is Ceiling Light Rejecting and you can see different products/screens with different patterns to achieve this effect.

              • @DONMAI: Good to know. Cheers for the explanation!

        • Unfortunately you're talking about long throw apples as if they are the same as Ultra Short Throw oranges. UST projectors ALWAYS benefit from a specialised UST screen, regular throw projectors can do better with a white screen ,in some use cases or can do better with an ALR screen (which is not a UST screen) in other cases.

Very tempting… been waiting since the previous cashback deals

I still love my $130 Big W HD projector with a 200" screen.

    • Cool, good to know.

  • I just ordered the 9T, but having second thoughts…

    Samsung 9T $5500 + 120" $2000 = $7500
    Samsung 7T $3000 + 120" $2000 = $5000
    Hisense L5G 120" = $5000
    Hisense L5G 100" = $3500

I might just get the Hisense…

    • +1

Didn't realise the Hisense comes with the screen. Probably a better buy if you don't mind not having the Samsung. I just so happen to have most things Samsung

    • +1

Good luck whatever you choose. I can say that Hisense support has been good. Had to go to them twice and they resolved the issues both times. One needed a screen replacement and the other needed a projector replacement. Maybe some minor quality control issues, but 3yr warranty gives me peace of mind. Overall, I’m happy with the purchase.

I have a xiaomi ust projector from a couple of years ago and paid $2200. I'm super happy with mine and for this price it's a no brainer. I'm looking at a 100 inch alr screen now and the total cost for my set up will be $3200.

If you want a 100+ inch image and are willing to take a chance on an import brand plus cost of an ALR screen then it will work out better than buying an led TV.

Ust projectors are still too expensive from bricks and mortar stores imo.

    • just noting that from looking into this myself, these are realistic prices for 100-120" projector+screens. if only 150" fixed ust alr screens were more readily available…

      • Most of the current projectors can't project more than 120".

        • move the projector back a bit…

          • @DONMAI: Not sure if that works, I dont have one at the moment, haven't tried this myself.
However, this Samsung 9T says the projecting size is between 110" and 130". I assume the image would go blur if I move it further from the wall.

          • @DONMAI: Moving the PJ back does not overcome the UST Projector screen size limit. The limit is about not being able to focus properly nor throw an evenly lit image above a given size (most commonly 120 inches).

UST Screen sizes are currently limited to a maximum 120 inches due to the complex screen material manufacturing limitations. Any larger would require a join in the fabric.

            • @skysurfer: still bigger tho. haha i dont know how hisense or sammy projectors go but various xiaomi/fengmi seem fine to go 150" and bit bigger. youre probably spot on, but would like to see the 120"/130" ones can project up to 150" nicely even if not perfectly.

ive seen 150" ust alr screens online few months after i bought my 120" one. no idea if there are joins to achieve it. as long as it looks good, doesnt really matter.

              • @DONMAI: Please post a link to any 150 inch UST screen. I don't think you will be able to but am hoping you can.

                  • @DONMAI: Look closely you will find it does not use the proper UST material and is in fact named as an ALR screen which can also be used as a UST screen, but it will not perform nearly as well as a true UST Screen because it does not have the proper UST structure (the sawtooth cross section) It is called a Grid ALR screen because it uses a compromise material that is available in larger size. It's called a Grid screen because the structure is grid like and it can be used for long throw projectors as well. It's made by XY Screens the same company that makes the proper UST Screen the PET Crystal (which has a maximum size of 120 inches). If you want to see a user review of the grid and the PET Crystal there is at least one on YouTube and the reviewer will tell you the grid does not work as well as the PET Crystal does with his UST projector (for obvious reasons to do with the surface structure).

                      • @DONMAI: I will check it out and get back to you. If it was any good I would probably know of it but you never know maybe it's brand new.

                      • @DONMAI: @DONMAI: Well I did very thorough research on T-Prism and found it has been available at least since 2019 yet could not find a single user review let alone any comparison to the popular XU PET Crystal, Elite Screens Starbright or any other UST screen. I found one person who actually bought one but it was damaged on delivery and that person didn't ever uphold their promise to provide feedback when they got a replacement.

Given that there is nothing to be found on this screen yet their is an abundance of information on the other UST screens I conclude there is a reason for that which can't be good, and almost nobody is using them. If they were any good it would be easy to find that out. I am a (humble) expert in these things and my findings confirm why it was not on my radar (I probably looked into it years ago, dismissed it and forgot about it).

                    • @skysurfer: that is a pretty cool video on there. for others, the screen material comparison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKksnbI2TgY&t=180

                      • @DONMAI: Actually I meant this one
                        https://youtu.be/wxUvUFs14Bs

Basically if you have a light controlled room (meaning low light) the Grid works well but the PET Crystal works better (it's brighter) and especially in a lit room which means it can be a TV replacement whereas the Grid cannot.

Can someone explain the benefits of a short throw vs long…..?

    • +1

in terms of Ultra short throw it can sit on entertainment unit and all the devices can easily be connected. Unlike in long projectors wiring is an issue. Most of UST are using laser lights unlike traditional lamp so have more life and colour accuracy.

      • wiring is an issue

I think you mean isn’t an issue!

        • Ya my bad.

    • +1

These are ultra short throw where the main benefit is you can use it with an ALR screen so it doesn't need a dark room.

  • +1

Very tempting. Even I never show lsp9t at such a low price till date. Good deal, considering many 85 inch mini led cost same except those comes with even HDMI 2.1 which isn't there at the moment in any ust projectors.

    • Whatever, you pay for the 9T, you would still have to add $2000 on top of it to get a screen.

      • +1

Or buy the screen without frame and build your own for a fraction of its price.

Not sure if you can think the material for the UST like this one but elite screen has a designer cut version. The cloth costs around $200 with a good cinegrey 5D. Check it out on Amazon or bhphoto. The frame is just wood any can do it (or pay to someone do it).

        • An entire screen asks for $3000 but the cloth only costs around $200… are we saying the frame costs more than $2000 and that is a ridiculous amount of money for a frame.

        • +1

@dienk You're looking at the wrong fabric for UST. That fabric is ONLY for long throw projectors. There is currently no DIY UST fabric. It's quite a complex multilayer material.

          • @skysurfer: Yeah that explains the high price then.

  • +1

Got an xgimi Elfin recently. $1k from Amazon. Awesome little unit. Can't imagine any projector being 4k better, or even 1k better. Small, quiet. Got Google TV built in. Wifi, Bluetooth.

    • +2

800 lumens and not short throw. Not comparable.

    • I imagine you project the image on a white wall.

  • +1

Anyone recommend a good 120" roll up alr screen?

    • Yes, can anyone please recommend a good ALR screen and it won't cost an arm and a leg? The ones I can find all cost between $2000 tp $3000 for 120".

    • +1

havent looked into it, so i can't. but for anybody else looking, note that there's ALR for non-UST and there's also ALR for UST.

    • +2

UST projectors demand a flat screen that is fixed in the same CORRECT place if you want an evenly focussed and evenly lit image. A roll down screen will move in the air currents in the room and it will not be perfectly flat and perfectly aligned in all planes in the same spot every time it's lowered. You can get really ugly ones with lots of tensioning arms and cords down each side that makes the material fairly flat but doesn't help swaying (and as mentioned looks terrible). A fixed screen is the only way to get a consistent great image with UST projection.
