    Very high sensitivity

  • +22

RATs should be widely available now that ACCC got involved,
but from my experience unless one really needs to take RAT tests dont bother unless you got them free, they are waste of money.

    • +1

      why waste?

is it coz we can still go clinic

      • They are almost useless, not very accurate even for the very high sensitive ones.
If you have major symptoms it is better to go and get PCR.

        • +3

If that, you'd be given a RAT at testing sites to do it at home.

          • -2

@Jamesx: People normally would take a RAT test when they feel something, at this stage RAT would not be able to detect anything, so you would end up taking a few tests, waste of money. By the time the symptoms got worse, RAT might or might not work, it is better go and get a PCR.

        • +5

Not very accurate? Most of the ones I've come across are around 90%… Pcrs aren't 100%

          • +1

            @TEER3X: According to the manufacturer.

        • +5

No. If you had major symptoms, it most likely means your viral load is high. That is when the RAT would be able to show an individual is positive for Covid-19. PCR would definitely be positive. If someone had minor symptoms and just wanted to be cautious, a PCR would be more ideal. RATs detect viral load and are sensitive to relatively higher viral load than PCRs. PCRs detect the actual presence of the virus.

        • I read the rapid antigen test detect like 40% -60% of asymptomatic cases.. which is why I do one every second day.

          • -1

@Savas: we get these free at my work so I do a test in the morning and another in the afternoon, every day I go to work.

            • @Logical: very nice !! username checks out. what field of work is that?

        • +3

That is not correct. For RATs to be approved it needs to have a Specificity of at least 90%. That means that when the RAT is negative, it captures at least 90% of people who are actually negative for COVID. If you don't have a negative RAT test, then you should be "ruled in" as someone who might be COVID positive. Hence its use as a form of screening.

          • @Dr Acula: Makes sense - can you confirm your username checks out?

    • Govt are making tests free to public schools. Next week most families will have access.

      • +1

Only if you're in NSW, where the Federal LNP government seems to somehow have procured tests that can suddenly be diverted there for the state LNP government while everyone else seems to be getting theirs seized at the border

    • +6

Completely agree prices will come down. However, if I woke up with a serious case of potential covid the last thing I'd want to do is book and then drive out to get a test kit even if it's free. $10 to do the test at home for me is worth it.

    • +6

RATs should be widely available now that ACCC got involved,

The ACCC hasn't done anything other than toss around a few please don't rip people off claims or we might have to do some work.

    • -1

Absolutely right about money not spent well. The rule for RAT goes "If you get a negative and still have symptoms, go for PCR as there is a high chance of false negatives".

  • +4

Ordered and then cancelled. Dont require 20 kits at the moment .

    • +6

It’s a catch-22. While they’re in stock there is no need to order. When there is no stock you’re stuck without them.

      • I’m sure most people know at least a few people they can split this up with at cost if 20 is too many, and people would much rather pay $8.50 or so per test than $15 that many are going for.

  • +1

Whats the go with the description " this disposable, non-invasive oral fluid test is Delta variant detectable and simple to use."
Does it still work with omicron?

    • This one is nasal swab version so I think even their descriptions are mixed up

    • Old marketing that needs to be updated/product backlog flogged?

Yes it does. Strange that they haven't provided data for variants other than Delta and Omicron

  • +2

Costco going for the triple whammy today on the front page

  • +1

    Thank you!

  • how long delivery takes from Costco?

    • I ordered the previous brand on the 17th just before 8 pm. Delivered about 9 am on the 19th

    • Costco normally ships from NSW with auspost. And they take a few days to process your order.

  • +2

This is getting more expensive? It was $154.99 last week

    • -1

the 154 are for saliva i believe

      • +2

No both have gone up $20 since the last time they were in stock.

    • +1

Was a different brand last week - these ones are individually packaged which is handy for sharing

      • They always have individual package for this test.

        • I bought the cheaper ones last week from Costco and they aren’t individually packaged. The test cartridge is bit not the other components. The one advertised in this thread has them packaged individually as complete tests

  • +3

We used these the other day (albeit the saliva/spit ones - paid $37.50 for just two units from the local chemist).

    I can confirm they work.

Son started getting a minor chest cough Wed night, tested Thursday morning and the most slightest of lines was visible albeit after the 15 minute period had expired.
Tested with second unit on the Friday and positive line was clearly visible.

    • Is he feeling okay?

      • +4

        yeah all good.

        • Why did you decide to test for covid? What’s the indicator? Our after school care has been sending covid alerts regularly.

It’s quite nerve wrecking to see what’ll happen once school starts.

          • +4

@spasto: Our indicator was the 'chest cough' that appeared.

We tested only because our kids are at various school and club sport programs over this holiday period not to mention out and about in community/friend's houses and didn't feel right sending them out if we suspected they were infectious.

It wasn't our kids that we were particularly worried about, but rather those compromised in the community that are susceptible. (I've got a neighbour on oxygen for emphysema for example that will be a goner should he get it).

            • +1

@mshanann: That's the approach that I very much support.

We've got older relatives that we need to support and having a handful of well regarded (ie reliability is higher) RATs is good community insurance - even if you feel that the personal consequences are not likely to be severe.

  • +4

Why dont people just go to a testing site if they have symptoms? they give you two free ones anyway?

    • +1

I went to a testing site the other day as I had symptoms, had to wait an hour before they gave me 2 RATS. I guess it’s a time v money situation for some people. ( I ended up positive)

      • +1

Luck of the draw I went to a local testing site and was out of there within 10 mins with two rat tests.

        • Nice! Well as long as you tested negative :) they took my reference number as well, I wonder if they have a cap on how many you can get with your ID

    • Went to Monash testing to grab RATs and it was closed wtf.

"Covid testing closed due to weather conditions lol"… Website even said it was open!!!

  • None in Costco store today , but ordered these.Have more faith in nasal swabs.
Already have Costco saliva ones which I don't trust as daughter had 6 positive workmates( all after same shift with original positive guy) on PCR and she was symptomatic and was negative on all test oral swab( from Costco).

  • +1

Got covid last week. Got these tests this week.

    • +2

      How's the latency over there

      • +1

They'll let you know next week, when they get your message.

    • From close contacts?

  • +1

    Thanks OP, grabbed one

  • Whenever needed the drive through testing site provide two free each time. I hope I don't need to buy these.

    • they are giving away free in most states now, what you gonna do with 20? lol

      • +1

If you travel internationally and then want to enter a sensitive environment (school, hospital, prison etc) you’ll need a lot of these.

Tax deductible if you need them for work etc (flight crew, nurses)

      • Unless you are a pensioner or on welfare, I don’t think you’ll get the RAT kits for free? We are now seriously considering getting a couple of 20 packs as school starts next week.

      • +1

As a household of 6 we’d probably need 4 tests each time we test the family (excluding our 2x 1 yr olds possibly), and I’m banking on us being asked to as we have 4 kids in school or childcare who Im sure we’ll find are sitting alongside other kids with Covid at some point.

Now if we test once when notified and again 7 days later if we did get it, then we’re possibly going through 8 kits pretty quick.

For people on their own 20 is stacks. For a family I don’t think it’s hugely excessive and I don’t fancy getting in a car to line up for free kits with two babies in the rear seat. Results may vary but I have a colleague who was told the policy was to not hand out kits for family members that aren’t in the car too if you do go to pick some up.

  • +1

    Thanks!

  • +1

Why the heck are people buying 20 packs???

    Like seriously ?

    • If you run a business you will need these things in bulk. Costco has lots of small business members.

    • +1

Add to their bulk toilet paper, hand sanitiser and 20kg rice collection.

      • Don't forget the pastas !

    • +1

It's recommended you use these whenever you go to a social event or restaurant, etc. (Although supply makes this tricky in practice)

For a family of 4, this is 5 such events.

      • +3

Or even just a family of four, each testing once after exposure, once after symptoms and once after symptoms end that's already over half a pack gone, never mind testing before going to visit grandma.

    • Also these aren't 100% accurate so best to take more than 1 just to be sure

      • +1

Not simultaneously though - better to take them daily if you're unsure. Taking two in a row is only going to show a different result if there was user error (not a sufficient sample). But yes, they're not 100% accurate, so best to treat a negative result as an indication - not an assurance.

Here's a good graph as to why they're "less reliable" than a PCR, it's more about the point in time since your exposure. So if you're taking daily RATs after a potential exposure, the efficacy goes up because you're more likely to test during a period in which a RAT is effective.

  • Thanks for the deal OP!

  • +1

This lasted very long …. Some people will be disappointed…

    • +1

the sooner these stop selling out, the sooner we will have a massive surplus… hoarders and resellers are screwing us atm

  • Thanks for the deal. Bought it.

  • Saw people at cosco buying them today, bird is the word

  • Ta. Never used on-line ordering before. Gawd! It was so kludgy!

    • Really?! I've always found Costco online seamless.

  • +3

You know it's absolute madness when people buy these for inflated (or really any) prices mostly just to get a sense of closure rather than needing to get back to work. You don't need a rat test for your kids. Paying $10-30 for a test thats supposed to be free is lunacy, especially if said test will give false negatives during symptom initiation if the person is vaccinated. People refuse to accept the reality that everyone including themselves will eventually get covid. The government opened the borders for a reason, and as soon as they did, it is inevitable. They simply don't care about the general populace and the deaths. It's really up to your own immune system and health in the end, and a test result won't change anything.

So why not just get your free pcr, isolate till you get a result and stop relying on rats being your golden standard. This is coming from someone who received false negatives when my symptoms were the strongest. I had to make my own judgement to not return to work until I eventually received my positive pcr. I couldn't have it on my conscience to risk someone else's life because i had a negative rat and was desperate to go back to work for a couple days

    • +1

Don't know why you're getting negged, nothing you've said it's untrue or controversial

    • Harder to use up sick leave without a PCR too…
