  • Has anyone in order of a tesla noticed the RN number and the Citi bank account number (minus the bsb) is the same?

    • That’s the way it’s always been and is intended to help prevent fraud - your order number will always match the bank account number.

      • Ohh I see! I’ve never come across this method…

No deal. Tesla reliability isnt up there - check out

you have alternatives - Kia / Hyundai/Toyota springs to mind.

If you just want a CHEAP EV, suggest the Nissan lead 62KW as an import. Sure its not great (battery not liquid cooled impacts fast charge) but its really cheap - in $40-45k range
    https://prestigemotorsport.com.au/leaf-62kwh-import/

some options to chew over :)

    • -1

Does the 45k include all the compliance issues? I reckon it will cost smidgen above 50k. No deal.

Leaf is cheap and far too cheap.

Toyota doesn't have electric yet. Their BZ4E base model will be around 60k conservatively.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 is 75k ish.

      Kia what? EV6 ? I reckon will be 80k.

      • yes 45K would be done ready to drive away. I saw a 2019 model at (online japanese) auctions with 2,300kms that would be landed for ~41K. Of course no wty on 2nd hand to remember. But this is for people that want "cheap" and a good range and almost brand new. 41K is a lot less than a 60K Tesla. Its always your choice.

        The Koreans:
Iconic 5 is listed as drive away $54,418 on their website - your 75K must be a spiced up version?
        https://www.hyundai.com/au/en/cars/eco/ioniq/electric

EV6 stock IS in OZ but no price yet. Cant be far off Iconic 5 as its same base platform
        https://www.drive.com.au/news/kia-ev6-arrives-in-australia/

dont forget the Niro/Kona is also there and being revamped for 2022, $54,400

I still think Tesla reliability is still the issue here no matter what money/discount they offer. Its a 10 year investment for me. Sure the fanboyz will get upset with me but its reality

        • 2019, second hand, Jap import, no warranty … much less desirable car with about 200km of real world range and worse performance.
2022, brand new, local (made in China, which is the preferred), full warranty…. 300km'ish of real world range and better performance.

Not really a great comparison is it? And I'd hate to think what the resale of a second hand, JDM, no warranty EV would cost here after dropping $45k.
And I haven't even mentioned the whole thing about the fact Tesla's can utilise the Tesla infrastructure, as well as any other EV infrastructure - whereas your Leaf can't (right now).

And lets not forget, we're talking about a Nissan goddamn Leaf here - something you're granny thinks is "lovely".
Not exactly something you'd jump out of your skin to go and buy.

          • -1

@Deviner: Note the new leaf e+ 62kw is quoted at 385kms on nissan site. Given over estimation on these things, real world 300kms would be normal
            https://www.nissan.com.au/vehicles/browse-range/leaf/specs-a…

2nd hand, true - but save 15K due to this. 2000kms is a dealer demonstrator mileage on a car

what you say re Tesla infrastructure is totally true. All other brand EVs cant use it yet. Note leaf is Japanese-standard CHAdeMO and supports 100KW fast charge

I'm 100% concur the granny look. Its basically a corolla. Mind you the model 3 has the ugliest front duck bill I have ever seen on a car - def needs new front bumper to fix that!. We should not forget that SUVs dominate the market (along with twin cabs) so hatches and sedans aint the sweet spot unfortunately

            • +1

@mybrains: I'm all for diversity and getting more EVs mainstream, not just Teslas. Like the i4, EQS, E-Tron and Taycan etc…. they're insanely good, but too expensive.
There's just not a lot of EVs currently that do what a Model 3 is doing for similar money in my opinion.

I just wouldn't touch a Leaf - maybe I'm just getting Micra vibes off them. With CHAdeMO, they'd need an adapter here too.

The Model 3 isn't to everyone's liking, absolutely. But they're super popular now and resale value is still very good and they're a lot of bang for your buck.

But you're right - SUVs and UTEs…. once there are some affordable, good EVs, I think the mass population here will very quickly convert.

              • +1

@Deviner: I cannot for the world believe that a second hand jap import (requiring compliance and all that shoite) is being compared to the king of electric cars and innovation. :)

If someone on this thread wants a 2019 2nd hand car with no warranty (god awful looking as well) for $40-50k; go ahead!

I would pay $30 for brand new leaf though. More than happy to tolerate the awful looks and cruddy range.

        • +2

Your commentary about Tesla reliability flew out the window when you suggested a $45k grey import Nissan Leaf with no warranty as a viable option to a Tesla.

The Leaf is the one EV that requires at least one battery replacement in its life due to its lack of battery cooling, we have 12 years of data on this and its non-negotiable, and yes, this includes the 2nd Gen model:

          https://www.google.com/amp/s/cleantechnica.com/2020/12/05/my…

Not to mention that DC charging slows down to 15kW on your second fast charge on a long trip:

          https://cleantechnica.com/2021/04/23/nissan-leaf-still-not-s…

    • You know JD Power is all horseshit right?

      • Even if reliable, it’s was on 2018 models. People don’t realize Tesla innovate so fast and the car today is way better than the 2018 model quality wise.

        • Yea Tesla innovate so fast every year I want to buy one I think, I should just wait another year when it gets so much better.

I will get a EV one day.,, I swear I will

      • Prolly. I am concerned that they got the bottom 2 correckt. Jaguar and Alfa Romeo. Both require mechanics to be bought before bringing it home. I have heard of Alfa breaking down when driven home from dealership.

Never thought I'd live to see over-priced coal powered cars so heavily subsided by government.

    • +4

Can you show me where in the car the coal goes?

      • +1

Into the power station that delivers the electricity into the plug that goes in the car.

Or do you just conveniently forget that part?

        • +7

Does the car only work with coal powered electricity?

          • +1

@chuq: I'll lay London to a brick on that no one in this country who drives a Tesla is not connected to the national grid and therefore doesn't use coal powered electricity to run the car.

            • +2

@Seraphin7: Tesla owners will try to convince you they charge with their free solar. I once asked I don't want the Tesla. I want the free solar deal. They got unhappy.

They also say they charge during the day for free. Therefore Tesla owners only drive after sunset and before sun rise it seems.

            • +1

              @Seraphin7: https://thedriven.io/2020/08/07/tasmania-off-grid-ev-owners-…

100% off grid. Runs house and two EVs from micro-hydro and solar.

Not even counting that two states have zero coal on their grid and are net exporters.

I can give you logical explanations all day long but it's patently clear that you're just parroting angry bogan talking points.

              • @chuq: If you read the article they don't live near the city. Sound like country bumpkins

                • @[Deactivated]: You appear to have no clue what you're talking about, nor does your comment have any relevance as to the use of coal?

        • +5

          another right wing talking point

you're blaming a car for a failure of federal energy policy

because the LNP has moved up into a path of coal then you conflate that failure with the car

theres people here who use purely solar power to run their tesla… wheres the coal there?

          • @tonyjzx:

theres people here who use purely solar power to run their tesla… wheres the coal there?

Are those same people not connected to the national grid?

because the LNP has moved up into a path of coal then you conflate that failure with the car

As yes, it's all the LNP's fault. How many coal fired power stations have been built under the current government?

            • +3

              @Seraphin7: welll…

for the last 25yrs the LNP have been in power for about 20 of those years… so who's fault is it again?

              • +2

@tonyjzx: The last coal fired power station built in Australia was Bluewaters in Western Australia, commissioned in 2009.

You guessed it, under the watch of none other the Kevin "greatest moral challenge of our time" Rudd.

          • -4

@tonyjzx: You don't think solar panel production requires coal power? LOL

You think the production of the car, the mining of the lithium etc is not powered by fossil fuels?

You think the ships that carry these cars are hydro powered or something?

If you drive one of these you're consuming fossil fuels. Are you going to tell future generations that you couldn't save the earth because you had to drive around in a car? Put your money where your mouth is and start walking barefoot everywhere. That way you can tell your grandkids what a great person you are.

            • -2

@Ghos7: why would i want to wade in to whatever nonsense argument you're trying there? you want bullet points? gfy

i hope you and your family have a good night

              • @tonyjzx: We dont need to go to personal attacks - lets keep it a happy place :)

I suspect Ghos7 is highlighting there is several points in the production chain that can be improved on (environmentally) in all cars being ICE or EV. Even the plastics in all cars are petrol byproducts. The bigger question is how do we find ways to lower the footprint without a cost blowout (as nobody can afford them then). If we dump plastic interiors, what can mfrs make them out of ? Or maybe they certify they use organic oils to make plastic out of (e.g sunflower etc)? There is so many points that can be improved. The current talk is about the massive landfill coming with old solar panels that have no way to recycle. We need to come up with a way to do this quickly or else create another future issue

              • @tonyjzx: sorry the hard questions upset you LOL

        • +2

Almost 100% of my charging is from Solar PV. I would put money on most Tesla buyers being solar PV owners too.

          • -3

@dtpearson: "Almost" 100%? Where does the other amount come from?

What do you do when the Sun's not shining and the batteries have no charge left?

What about the rest of your home's electricity needs?

Do these things come from the grid? Which is majoritively powered by coal?

I think that guy who invented the internet said it best … "An Inconvenient Truth".

            • @Seraphin7: LOL you got downvoted for asking inconvenient questions.

These climate cultists can't argue their point on the running of the car, let alone the production and shipping. I guess I'll keep asking them and watching them squirm.

          • +2

@dtpearson: Agreed. Charge car over parts of Sat/Sun using solar, balance home usage with a/c etc. Current solar around 42kwh per day. Drive 86km 4 days a week for work to train station and back. WFH 1 day a week (Wednesday) top up/charge car. Car flat? Nope hasn't happened as of yet, can drive our other car.

            • @thermos: LOL your other car is fossil fuel powered or do you keep another tesla charged up for redundancy? LOL

              • @Ghos7: It is a V8 ute used for picking up hay bails, grain for animals and such tasks.

          • @dtpearson: you should definitely start mining Bitcoin.

          • -1

@dtpearson: Just note that I don't believe there is any way to recycle solar panels at present so they become landfill when they age and lose output. This is another problem we are creating for the future generations in a big way. Note I have solar on my house so I am guilty too.

We just need to research more before we believe the green washing on products to get us to buy them

    • Likewise.
Hopefully it gets the fan cooled front seats that have been (accidentally?) added to the user manual

  • This newer model (2022) comes with heated seats and heated steering wheel and car mats as a standard.

This is too hot for me!

  • +1

NSW has higher rebate which makes the drive away price below $60k.

  • -1

Hopefully it comes with working brakes and calipers.

    • Not surprised. They charge for map updates already.

  • Note ZLEV tax in Vic. 2.5c per km.

    • But with all the savings on fuel and maintenance you can afford to spend a few hundred bucks ($275 if you drive the average 11,000km pa) so potholes don't buckle your alloys.

      • Financially? No problem. Being world first ev taxing state? Not so much

  • Is this car subject to luxury car tax?

      No.

LCT starts at 79K ish for fuel efficient vehicles.

Does it come with a cooled steering wheel during the summer when the car has been sitting in direct sunlight during a 30°+ day

    • +1

With the direct sunlight, my current car gets heated seats, heated steering wheel & heated floor mats automatically free of charge.

      Good article

Tesla has lots of quality issues, just need to watch any one of many YouTube videos from owners showing the issues from Day 1 of ownership

As the Model 3 is Made in China, will wait for the Model Y for hopefully improved build quality

  • Does anyone know if ordering now would guarantee zev subsidy given that delivery would take 14-20 weeks? Would appreciate details from those who recently ordered

    • +3

The government really needs to step in and provide some guaranteed and straight forward incentives and subsidies for EVs

      • I rang solar vic and was basically told to order and not to worry but still want guarantee. I even asked if I can retrospectively apply if ever all 4k subsidies are exhausted(they have 20k subsidies in total) but rep told me he's not sure about it. Now I want to find out for those who recently ordered if subsidy was calculated in the total

Edit: Last time I checked was on 30 Dec 2021 08:08 AM and it was 1,711.

    • I was told by solar vic staff that subsidies should still be there even if I order in the next few months. He reckons not enough interest at the moment and won't be exhausted anytime soon

      • Just glancing at the the numbers over the holiday period, it looks like ~700 spots were filled, so I'm not sure what they could mean by not enough interest.

        • Yeah not sure as well. I only started checking 2 weeks ago. It was 1090 then

        • +1

Not guaranteed zev is what actually stopping me to pull the trigger. I know it's only $3k compared to the price of the car but I'd be more happy if I get it

  • Wish I could afford one as they are a great vehicle. A few friends own them.

Still totally un-affordable for people earning around the medium wage ( currently around $60K AUD per year ) or less … Especially if you have to pay for rent or other boring stuff like food.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-09/typical-australian-wa…

    • This is true. But then can you afford a Rav4 Edge about $56k?? MANY can. that's the point. Some can own Range rover about 220k base.

    • 60k …. you're basically on minimum wage. thats really the truth of it sadly. you wont be able to even save to buy a cheap house let alone a tesla. used car for you id imagine.

  • +2

I am guessing this 2022 model 3 come with thium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. It means you could charge up to 100% instead of 80% maximum charge in the older models and safer too.

    • +2

      yes, ~60kWh LFP

  • Naa. most car brands that know how to make cars are bringing out a fleet of EVs within the next 2 years. Then down tesla goes…
