    The affordable EV

    Put down the splif Elon

    • +1

It's cheaper than the equivalent vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, Mazda and Nissan.

  • Love how the price goes down. We were considering one when it was $65k but held off due to finances. Now it's cheaper ☺️

  • +5

I bought one in August last year for $64,967.20 inc stamp duty, rego, CTP and licence plates. Add on the Government subsidy (which i got later on) and i got mine for $61,967.20. Note that mine came with car mats but the heated steering wheel and rear heated seats are an optional in-app purchase of $500.00 AUD (front heated seats come included).

Best car i've ever owned and i'm glad i converted from a long history of BMW cars to Tesla.

Also mine definately came from China. Still had some chinese paperwork in the center console when i picked it up.

Not quite a bargain (as there are no discounts) but i definitely recommend getting one if you're looking at a new car around that price range.

    • Are the Chinese ones generally better or worse than the alternative? And what's the alternative? USA?

      • +2

        theres' no alternative

the 3 all come from china now

its pretty obvious why… while the Model S and X have higher profit margin they can afford to make them elsewhere

but the 3 needs to be made in china for max profit

    • +2

DLC to activate already included physical components
      visible twitching

      • This. Quite concerned (most) Tesla seem to think it’s fine or justifiable…

It requires no change of liability (self driving) or ongoing development. Absolutely baffled.

    • You didn't get retrospective activation of optional heating? They did in the UK.

  • +5

there is no price drop same as it was last year.
59,900 before on roads been this price for awhile now.

  • Is Tesla the only car manufacturer dropping prices?

    • They aren't. Post is inaccurate.

  • +1

Anyone got opinions on the best wall charger for when we decide to get a Tesla or similar?

Ideally I'd like something that monitors my solar output and only charges the car if I have excess production that I'd otherwise be exporting.

That I could then override at certain times if I needed the car to have a certain range etc. And have a minimum to charge from the grid if required.

    • +3

The popular solar-aware charger is the Zappi. Note however that it's about $1k more expensive than the Tesla Wall Connector. I really doubt you would save that $1k with the 'smarts' in the Zappi compared to just 'dumb' scheduling charging during the daytime.

The car comes with a mobile charger and a lot of people find this to be sufficient for their needs without installing a hard-wired charger. My advice would be to see how you go with the mobile charger, and only upgrade if you think you need it.

      • Also Zappi need a ct clamp installed in your switchboard to detect that and wired back to zappi machine, or need to buy wireless module which will attract extra $ to install.

However, ScoMo :tm: announced there will be home charger subsidy starting this year so that might gives you more affordability.

        • I know he announced it, but didn't see it was starting this year. Do you have a link you can share?

      • Thanks. Seems like such a smart thing to include is weird there is only 1.

  • Much safer for these to be FWD for the cheaper models.

    • +1

This ain’t an old ICE car with slow traction control, EV motors are controlled via superfast power electronics, I’ve been completely unable to even chirp the tyres at full power round a sharp corner in the wet in mine.

      • Besides all of the technology, FWD has many things going for it, which is why it is the preferred setup for manufacturers and consumers alike.

        • FWD was originally conceived for ICE vehicles to reduce manufacturing costs, increase space efficiency and increase safety. Manufacturing costs were reduced by incorporating the differential into the transmission (a so called 'transaxle assembly') obviating the need for a separate differential at the rear and its associated driveshaft. This also increased interior space as those bulky components were no longer present along the length and back of the car.

Before traction control and stability control they were also safer than RWD as FWD's tend to fall into easily controllable understeer when they exceed the available grip of the tyres, whereas RWD's oversteer causing the rear wheels to come around spinning the car. The only downside of FWD is that the front tyres have to pull double duty, both steering & drive power, so in wet conditions it is easy to lose traction and experience understeer and power reduction from the traction control.

The small footprint of electric motors and their single speed gearboxes allow them to be easily mounted at either end of the vehicle without impinging on interior space, and the oversteer problem is abolished with the control speed of the power electronics. RWD EV's then seize the advantage over FWD by providing superior steering ability because the front tyres don't have to apply drive power, so the aforementioned understeer and power loss is greatly reduced. This is the reason why serious race cars have been and are still RWD.

EV’s really do change the rules of the game which is why so many legacy manufacturers are struggling to adapt to the new possibilities that’s EV’s allow.

    • +1

Yeah this FWD statement is completely wrong/misinformed.
As Dodsrule mentioned, you're comparing it to an ICE car, which has the heavy engine in front.

The Model 3 has all the weight tucked under nearly the full length of the car, giving it a much, much, much lower centre of gravity, so makes it way more stable.

      • It’s a funny thing, I remember the arguments of 20 years ago between the RWD and FWD enthusiasts when RWD was dying out. Both sides had good points, FWD offered packaging efficiency, lower cost and safety, RWD offered superior driving dynamics.

Now that the bulky ICE/transmission problem is a thing of the past and the motor power electronics offer millisecond response time, I cannot think of a single advantage of FWD in the EV era.

  • joke post??

  • +1

I wouldn't consider $3000 out of $65000 a "significant" drop. Works out to be less than a 5% discount.

  • I paid this back in August…..

    • That sounds right, the last price drop was in July.

  • So what's the running cost compared to normal ones? Like how much for 100kms?

    • +4

My off peak electricity rate is 13.9c/kWh. So 100 km would cost about $2.09 in electricity.
If I charge from solar (and pretend it is "costing" the amount that I would have been paid to sell the solar to the grid, which is 6.5c/kWh) then 100 km of driving costs me 97 cents.

  • It's ozbargained.. out of stock now.

  • The funny thing is, every time when I see a post involves Tesla ZEV $3k discount, despite all the upvotes the actual subsidy allocation number goes down really slowly and that's not even exclusive for Tesla.

  • -1

Thanks OP. Got one for each of the kids.

  • +2

We need this in WA, now!

  • I really want one of these things - if I got one I wouldn't waste my time with anything but the performance model. But letting my cammed 6.0L go for something that doesn't make a sound is a hard decision to make, and I don't want 2 cars and 2 regos plus the wife's.

    • You will need to get used electrik eventually but I suppose you can hang on to the 6L as long as you can.

      • Yes correct. Will be interesting to see how the market goes…… Will they go up in value due to the govt. giving exemptions for people who already have petrol cars? If so I expect it to be like cigarettes - you can have them, but you'll pay through the nose and it will continue to get more expensive.

        • Perhaps. I suspect there might be a niche market for manual driven cars also. I suspect self driving cars will be similar to manual vs auto cars now. Literally no one will use a manually driven car let alone one that needs constant oil changes etc. Petrol prices will be through the roof and very low demand.

my prediction is that one won't be able to sell normal ICE cars easily but could potentially sell a unique ICE like black edition Merc etc.

          I have spoken.

          • @Naigrabzo: Yes good to get other opinions. My SS is not Hsv and so doubt it will be worth money down the track. Will need to pick the sweet spot in terms of selling it but I imagine the days of even more expensive petrol will be upon us much sooner than we think.

            • +2

@Lets Make Sandwiches: I think so.

Once petrol companies get on board with electrik companies to make their real estate as charging stations, my guess is that petrol/diesel will be rare and only used on large trucks etc… All I know is that I will pay fair money for quick charge.

In saying that I kid you not, I just passed an ELECTRIK TRUCK the other day in the ACT. It looked like an Isuzu medium sized truck with a HUGE battery pack on the side.

I won't comment on petrol prices because it's out there for everyone to see.

              Who knows though.

This is not a great time to buy a car though because electric are expensive and petrol might become useless soon.

  • Has the QC improved? These are the Chinese made ones, right?

    • +7

apparently. Not just QC but actual build quality. Chinese are better at consistency than USA.

    • +2

Heard Chinese made one is actually better build quality wise.

      • Yep, read the same, too.

  • +1

I hate these pea-sized indicators on the model 3, quite a few times I couldn’t see the car about to turn as it was sunny and especially when they have brake lights on, you can hardly see the indicators. I thought there must be some laws that require the indicators to be sufficiently visible.
But I heard the model 3 in the US/EU have different rear lights, is that true?

    • +1

yeah, hate those indicator lights. Need bigger and brighter.

      • I really want to complain this to the authorities but not sure which one in QLD or even AU wide. When you can’t see the indicators, accidents are waiting to happen.

        • RTA?? I dunno either. MAybe an ozb petition online? online petition.org?? or something?

        • ADR compliant

    • I agree 100% they are tiny! I believe newer models are getting slightly longer indicators along with other updates.

  • serious question, anyone just have an extension cord from their front window out to the driveway to charge the car? Would this get me fast charge or same rate as installing a dedicated charger??

    • +1

extension cord will probably take 20 hours to charge it. max power from extension cord will be 2000w ie 2kw.

      • +1

No, a dedicated charger will be way faster (up to 11kw on 3 phase), extension cord will be only 2kw max (and its not really safe especially if you have it all looped together).

    • You could get 15A extension lead, otherwise 10A from standard GPO.

      3 phase @16A gives you 11kW
      1 phase @32A gives you 7.2kW

      • And, this battery is 61kw/h.

      • so it's just the cable that improves the charging? I can't install a dedicated charger, not sure how long I'm living at this place.

  • -3

The unsafe car that has countless flaws in it

  • Bought 1, now need a cracking deal on charging cable.

  • +2

I'd wait 5-6 more years before buying an EV.

    • Market will be much mature then for sure.

This deal is for now, not 6 years ahead.

    • +2

Why? I would have spent an extra $25k in petrol in that 5-6 years if I have of waited.

      • depends on your driving kms per year isn't it. more your drive the more you may save.

        • Tesla drivers either drive high kilometers, over estimate their fuel bill or just don't give a rats about the environment (because they drive gas guzzlers) and just want to save a few bucks.

  • Wow!

    Heated Seats!

    Heated Steering Wheel!

    Heated knobs!!?

    • Pretty sure Range rover may have heated knobs as well. Start at 220k finish full spec at $499k. Chek it but don't wreck it.

  • -1

are these the ones with a 5 year old battery pack?

  • This has been the standard price since July last year. Good price but not an ozbargain.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637111

  • $59800 after rebates in nsw

    • Sweet jesus it's almost as cheap as RAV4 EDGE hybrid. :P

      • and the wait is less

        • up to 6 months but will deliver faster IME.

  • my next car is a V8 to offset one of these

    Plants need carbon!

    • +1

Go for V12. V8 is for babies.

Merc AMG S65 as a minimum but can consider Aston martin Vanquish.

      • +1

Thank you fellow plant saviour. Sage advice.

    • +1

Jokes on you - I charge mine with coal fired electricity.

      • +1

        touche

      • Not a small backyard diesel generator?

        • +1

Now if I could just rig up a generator on a trailer and charge while I drive - goodbye range anxiety!

      • Buhahaha! You don't get to decide on that m y man. soon it will be re-newables. Politicos are delaying things only because of votes and older folk who are coal miners etc. Once they die out, we can get on with it.

  • Does anyone think the performance model will get quicker for the amount of money they cost? These things already can keep up with an aventador I believe

    • i don't think so.. it could potentially affect the sales of Model s perhaps? 3.3 sec is pretty darn good though hey!

      • Good point. Wouldn't want to canabalise the plaid. Plaid does a 9.3 second quarter mile without the silly burnouts first, fat tyres, and unreliable mods. I thought that would be impossible not too long ago. Hopefully the plaid can get into the 150k territory one day and then I would pull the trigger. 250K just too much but good value compared to petrol alternatives.

      • It's 3.1s 0-60 now.
3.3 was the previous Performance model.

    • +1

I have almost never seen an Avantador on the road but I suppose you can race one at the red lights?? How long would the race last until you reach 60k/hour. 1 second?

      • I have almost never seen an Avantador

People race against a cheap stop watches.

        • Ah yes, wait for the Casio deals. :)
