This is because they are car enthusiasts. Happened when I drove WRX, MX5 GT86.

          • @onlinepred: Car enthusiasts… don’t necessarily buy a Tesla. Hmm no-one I know that owns a Tesla is a car enthusiast, they either like what Elon is doing or they have it as a status symbol.

It’s a club, just like moto riders nod to each other as they pass, they’re in a group. Whatever floats their boat.

            • @ctg: They mustn’t really be car enthusiast then hey. I love all cars, not just certain ones. Hence an enthusiast.

            • @ctg: You can get Tesla tuned & upgraded, there is an enthusiast market slowing building around them.

Why are some people so sour about Teslas?

I can only speak for myself, but I don't care what you do with your money. What I do care about is when the government takes my money and gives it to you so you can give it to Elon Musk.
Subsidies for consumer items are simply a mechanism for large wealthy corporations to bleed money from taxpayers. The whole concept is morally bankrupt.

      • -1

The big difference is Elon is helping you protect the planet while making his trillions which is why the government subsidises an EV purchase

        • We don't have enough renewables in Australia to claim this is protecting the planet. The EV feel-good is a bit of a scheme right now. If we can get some nuclear going alongside alternative energy sources in the next couple decades we will be much closer to that goal.

        • The big difference is Elon is helping you protect the planet

          Show your working.

which is why the government subsidises an EV purchase

          Ha, too funny

How much planet has been protected so far?

          • -1

            @1st-Amendment: It's pretty simple mathematics like 1+1 = 2
Billions of cars burning carbon for decades gives carbon dioxide
If the majority use electricity instead you emit a lot less carbon dioxide
Do I need to give you more details than that?

            • +1

              @JTTheMan:

Do I need to give you more details than that?

If you think that was logical argument we probably shouldn't go any further…

        • Through the shit that gets burnt from spacex? Or the underground system of slow cars? Maybe a tube system? Or solar panels? Surely these things dont produce any byproduct to cause us any actual harm!

      • What I do care about is when the government takes my money and gives it to you so you can give it to Elon Musk.

Feel the same about the $$ that GM and Toyota shipped OS as well as the petro-chemical companies.

Subsidies for consumer items are simply a mechanism for large wealthy corporations to bleed money from taxpayers. The whole concept is morally bankrupt.

In the end the subsidy is lube before for the Road Usage Tax reaming

    • why only these 3 brands?

  • -7

There are better EVs out there.

    • For this money/value? Genuinely interested in what you consider to be better?

      • He might be talking the crappy MG.

      • Nothing at this price range. Tesla is hands-down the most competitive at this accessible price point.

The next big bump at $110,000 would be a BMW i4 eDrive40

        • +1

          Hyundai Ioniq?

          • @pOint01: Range is lower and still 55k. Tesla $59k with muuuuuch better autopilot.

            • @Naigrabzo:

              muuuuuch better autopilot

You won't say this after it slams the breaks on the middle of the road which could easily result in a pile up, just because the car in front turned right or it was closing a cyclist or tried to run a red light because there was no car in front.

              • @websterp: Fair call. I would never use it except in motorways. Other cars do not even have a auto pilot system anywhere close to this.

                • +1

@Naigrabzo: Every car with an stop and go adaptive cruise control system and lane guidance has "Autopilot" just as good as a Tesla. In fact probably better since other brands use both radar and camera systems in conjunction.

                  • @tp0: Do you have evidence to say that other cars are better than TEsla. I thought Tesla were the leaders in self driving?? I am not sure myself.

                    • @Naigrabzo: Irrelevant since self driving vehicles are illegal for use on public roads in Australia. As far as we're concerned here the self driving capabilities of a Tesla are no different to many other, some much cheaper, vehicles with Level 2 autonomous functionality.

              • +1

@websterp: I had this happen once when I got the car back in August. Since a software update shortly after, I haven’t experienced phantom braking since.

              • @websterp: This is potentially true for any car with collision avoidance. They all have to abide to standards.

              • +1

@websterp: My parents new Mercedes GLE300D did exactly this on cruise control on the highway. People act like Teslas are the only car that does it. Any car with radar based cruise control can suffer from phantom braking.

        • Because it's made in China

    • Ah! Help! Ive been mobbed by a pack of Eloon fanboys.

  • +2

Has been same price for a while now
Cheaper in NSW with stamp duty rebates

  • +2

    Thx OP,

Parents finally pulled the trigger and bought one. We have been having several problems with our model X for the past year :(. And Tesla won't cover it under warranty lmao

    • Congrats! Thats a shame :( What kind of problems?

      • Well it's the fully specd out model X. And guess what the problem is… It just won't go into Ludicrous mode :(.

        • Tho when the Plaid actually starts selling in Australia we are most probably gonna replace the model x with one

  • -1

Can we use them as usb bricks?

    • Better to get the IONIQ 5 I think. 75k.

      • You can't buy one for love or money. I tried.

  • +5

New orders have a 16-20 week lead time. Also 2022 built cars have a new AMD entertainment processor, Lithium 12v battery and redesigned rear light clusters.

    • Do you have a source for this? I have a friend that bought one recently and from order to getting the car was about 3 weeks.

      • +1

The source is the Tesla website. I ordered mine end of November and estimated delivery is late February. Your friend must have bought it about 6 months ago is my guess.

      • Demand has ballooned lately. About Aug-Sept it took about 3-5 weeks.
Orders from Oct-Dec were about 8-12 weeks.
        Now it shows 14-20 weeks.

      • On the Tesla website. Late last year was a different story where lead times were very short.

  • Honestly, these aren't even as expensive as I thought they were.

    • +2

Get 2. That will teach ya.

    • +3

They are cheaper than the Hyundai Kona, Kia e-Niro, Nissan Leaf e+, Mazda MX-30 and objectively much better value for money. Same price as the Polestar but you need to pay $5-10k in extra packages to anywhere close to the features the Model 3 has built in.

      • +2

MX30 is joke on humanity itself. You'd need to be an absolute numbskull to buy one.

        Kona is 'ok'.

Leaf is a good joke but repeckt for being the first commertial electrik in Australia.

Polestar is slightly expensive. Still Chinese if that matters. No history or reliability data.

        Kia I dunno about.

  • Hrrrrm.

    This or a Volvo?

    • -1

Well look, Volvo's are great and all but in my personal experience Tesla is much more better and worth it for what you are paying to what you are getting.

    • +3

Volvo is a joke because they are using an old platform and charging you 20k extra for the electric version. Let em come up with a electric specific platform and come into the party.

  • Do we know if it is built from China or US?

    • +2

      China

        • -4

Well they do have a mini factory in China and about to open up one in Germany this yr

          • +4

@TechnoHC: Their factory in China made more vehicles than their California one last year.

        • +6

Aus model is made in China i beleive, this info is out there on car review site if you want to goog it…

          • +3

            @scud70: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giga_Shanghai

            been there for a while

the quality of the cars coming out of china beats fremont by a long shot

            • @tonyjzx: Yep this is also what others have mentioned in forums etc…

              • @scud70: if you have a brand new custom factory with a new paint shop and with a 'compliant' yet well educated workforce then your product is going to be better than a factory that was original used by GM Toyota to make Corollas…. 30-40yrs ago lol…

                • +1

@tonyjzx: You’re actually not wrong. The Shanghai factory is state of the art just like the Foxconn factories that make iPhones. Products from Western companies that are made in China can be very high quality.

      • +1

        Wrong call them

      • i wonder why they have so many Tesla factories around the world. no wonder they had such manufacturng and logistics issues at the start if theyre shipping them all back to Fremont to get it made there.

    • +2

Only China factory makes RH drive models

      • -1

It happens to be that way at the moment, but its not like they can't make either LHD or RHD on any production line. UK vehicles were coming from Fremont as recently as 3-4 months ago, and China itself is LHD so they make both there.

      • Not true.

    • +3

      It's a Chinese made car.

    • Built in Shanghai, China.

Source: Just received a VIN for my order that's arriving in a couple of weeks.

    • +1

All Model 3s currently sold in Australia come from the Shanghai factory. This started when they introduced the facelifted model (Black window frame, door handles, power boot, etc, etc). Easy way to tell is to look at the window frames and door handles. If they are chrome the car is gen 1 from Freemont if all those are black then made in Shanghai ;)

      • Chrome delete also came from Freemont. Easier to check the VIN or the wood on the front door trims to conform MIC.

  • -4

What an absolutely cracking bargain this is oh my god I’ve just ordered 8 of them!

  • -2

What is the resale value of these cars after 3 years? I imagine they deteriorate substantially compared to ICE due to the main components being batteries?

    • +2

Have a look at carsales, it appears they don't lose a single $.

    • +4

If only there was a way to look up the price of a used Tesla, say, from 2019.. until a great inventor comes up with that, it will be a mystery for the ages!

    • I remember back in 2019 there were a couple of listings selling the Model 3 Performance for like 20k above RRP. Their reason (clearly stated on CarSales), we are charging a premium for you to have the car available now, as opposed to wait 12 weeks…lol

    • You'd be wrong then, Tesla batteries have excellent longevity. Something like 10% after several hundred thousand kms.

      • So you are saying that the batteries can last for over 500Ks?

        • +1

with due respect, I don't think most engines can last 500k without significant repairs. I am talking 30k worth of repairs. ;)

I don't think the batteries will last 500k though. By the time you drive 500k, then we will have much better battery tech and your car will be 15 years old. Maybe time to replace??

          Each to their own.

        • +2

Easily. The earliest Model S cars from 2012 have done that, and that's on a much less advanced battery chemistry.

        • +1

Yes, if anything they will last longer than ICE engines lol.

  • +3

How can people afford nice cars these days?

    • +15

People buy Ford Rangers and Toyota Landcruiser's every day that cost a lot more than a Tesla.

      • Land cruiser 110k

    • +6

true when a Honda Civic is $47200….tesla looks like cheap….lol

      • So true…

    • +1

      It's called cash in hand.

      • How?

        • +2

Ask any traide specially in the residential building industry.

          • @websterp: Are they all on finance, i see a lot of nice cars, people must be willing to pay for it.

            • +3

@Yaren24: Tradies: Ford raptor 85k. all tax deducted.

    • +1

Study at school, get a good job, work hard = buy nice things.

    • if you just put your head down and work hard everyday + overtime, you too can get your boss even nicer cars.

  • -2

Thanks, bought a couple, next Christmas presents sorted

  • How does this compare with the Peugeot 3008?

    • +18

      About 3005.

      • +1

Pity I was expecting the guy who recommends Peugeot for every new car post would get triggered ;(

  • Anyone knows how much to replace the battery ? I heard it will be around 1/3 of new car price. Is that correct ?

    • I don't think anyone knows as Telsa haven't been selling cars in Australia long enough to see cars reaching their useable life of the battery. The only time someone would find out the replacement cost would be if they happen to puncture the battery pack or the coolant system by driving over something sharp. But going by US replacement costs you are correct.

      • What is the expected lifetime of the battery?

        • +1

          Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive Warranty:

8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period.

Other models with bigger batteries have higher km limits on the warranty

There are reports of individual vehicle's batteries lasting much longer. Tesla would have the best statistical information, but they are keeping it to themselves.
