I mean, Bezos is arguably a bigger tool.

But better customer service than shit Harvey Norman.

        • +5

Customer service from Amazon if first class.

Always happy to support a smaller player and even pay a little more but unfortunately the market is dominated by mega corps with Amazon at the top of the scrap heap. TGG are now just a little cog in a big wheel and Gerry is simply the most offensive retailer I can think of.

      • +3

probably is however did he keep most of the job keeper money while recording record profits and sitting back like mc scrooge laughing it up

        • +3

He did not. But the list of grievances that Amazon staff face (in the US at least) could fill a warehouse. Saying don't shop at HN because the CEO is a bastard but then referring people to Amazon is just ironic. (Disclosure, I use Amazon all the time).

    • +3

      Just price match at TGG

      • +4

Nothing good about The Good Guys.

      • +1

Just called TGG Essendon and they said they’re not price matching Harvey Norman shields because it’s way below their cost. And they will only do it for $320.

They mentioned they have had a whole lot of people calling about it lol

        • +2

          $268
          way below their cost
will only do it for $320

So they will do it for $52 more, which I would almost guarantee is above cost; ergo $268 isn't "way below" their cost. Even if $320 is at cost, $268 is 16% off.

        • +9

Price match guarantee… When it suits.. Yup.. "good" guys

        • Moore Park TGG said can't match since the unit number isn't match:

Nvidia SHIELDPRO 4K Stream Android Media Player
          945-12897-2506-101(SHD_TV_PRO)

          vs

NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 4K HDR Android TV Streaming Media Player
          SHD_TV_PRO 812674023885

          • @empengpro: Lame excuse from TGG, but popular sale person's trick trying to refuse price match. They are exactly the same item
            UPC / EAN number: 812674023885
            P/N Part number: 945-12897-2506-101

            Show them this https://imgur.com/dJdvFFp

    • Exactly the same thought, but just woke up and U beat me to it by 3hrs and 9 seconds. Early riser clearly and U summed it up beautifully.

  • I ordered from yesterday's Amazon post but they've just pushed delivery from today to tomorrow.

Was tempted to cancel that yesterday and just go in-store to HN as the local is showing stock…hmmm…

I envy you mate. You have a lot of extra time on your hands..

      • Well yeah. Finished work for the year and all Xmas gifts already done.

        • Enjoy!

  • Honest question: I’m assuming this is for someone without a built in android tv, but why is it better than a google chromecast with Google tv (which costs a fraction of this)?

    • +2

Read the other thread linked above

    • +5

You can run Plex Server, stream PC games, IPTV, Side load Apps. I think you can even run emulation on there as well. + all your casting needs

      It’s a pretty powerful box.

      • Just try to ignore the ads.

        • +2

Long time Shield Pro owner. I haven't seen any ads yet. My Sony TV also has Google TV built in, and has all sorts of promo garbage on the Google TV interface. I much prefer the Shield for that reasons.

          • @t3chshopper: Does the shield have an 'apps only' mode like the 2021 Sony TVs?

        • I believe u can install some custom systems (still android) with clean look and ads free.

    • +2

I have this for my main TV and chromecasts for my smaller TVs.

The main advantages of this are:
      * Better remote - plus a find my remote function
      * More powerful processor so interface is faster
      * Can connect to ethernet cable for faster streaming
      * Some apps can use the extra power/bandwidth - e.g. Kayo lets you watch four streams at once, which it won't do on the Chromecast
      * Plays Android games, great retro emulation machine, great for Steamlink and similar game streaming services
      * Other neat tricks - can host a Plex server, access network drives, etc.

Chromecast can do most of what you need, but this thing is the best Android streaming box out there. I have had one for a couple of years and have had zero upgraditis.

I bought the original Shield back in November 2015 from Amazon US during a black Friday deal and paid US$ 200 including shipping and the original stand as well. It's going as strong as day one after 6 years. No trouble at all and I purchased the new remote few months ago. Fantastic piece of tech I've ever owned. Tick all the boxes and Nvidia has been super with their updates. Just buy it.

      • My experience too. The only reason I'm contemplating upgrading from the 2015 Shield TV is to get Dolby Vision compatibility, which the 2015 can't do.

  • +1

    The beast

  • Is it better to have this plugged in directly to your network via an ethernet cable?

    • Definitely better via Ethernet but 5ghz wifi is ok as well.

      • Mine just won't connect to 5GHz, I suspect because of the wifi channel. Still experimenting to figure out what channel range the Shield will tolerate :s

        • Get Wifi Analyser app on phone and check the channels to see what's going on. Maybe move 5Ghz channel to quieter channel.

        • 5GHz is faster but the signal does not travel as far. That's the nature of radio frequencies, the lower the frequency the better it travels both in terms of distance and through obstacles. 5GHz is faster but only close up. A large part of the speed is that there are more channels and therefore it can join channels together to have 40MHz, 80, 160 channel width (like lanes on a road).

Think short wave radio where the signal can be detected around the world, or Telstra buying the 700MHz band rights for mobiles (travels better through buildings in built up areas).

5GHz is also problematic if you use the higher channels and live near an airport because the radar interferes. That's why they have channel hopping built in. The router will listen for interference and hop channels. I don't think this affects the lower channels.

For these reasons, use channel 36-48 if you can choose as it is both slightly lower frequency to travel further and less likely to be affected by interference, or use 2.4GHz if further away.

    • Yup, especially if working with large files

      • Perfect - my main plan is to use this for plex. So was thinking I'd connect this into one of my deco m5s with an ethernet cable, and then use plex to chromecast to the various TVs in my house as required.

Thanks OP but anything from HN is a no from me.

  • No stock anywhere in VIC by the look of it.

  • Can this be used as a personal cloud for files, like Dropbox?

    • You can do file sharing to a certain extent if you plug in a USB drive, but it's not on the level of Dropbox.

It can do windows file shares

For this type of pricing I can get an N5095 with 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage and use it to do all the streaming services. Only additional thing to add would be a airmouse / remote but they aren't that expensive

    • +1

Dedicated optimised functionality vs lots of dicking around. If you can't see the value then sure, go and mod a PC.

    • or a ATV 4k? Around $150-200 when on sale

    • You're barking up the wrong tree looking at this if you're just using it for streaming services.

      • Sure, I already have 2 Google TV's - $139 each with 6 months of Netflix. They work well. But I can attach 4 usb drives for 20tb and use it as a NAS or Dlna server, I can run Kodi and stream basically anything and I can use it for a lot more.

My point is Arm stuff is supposed to be cheaper than Intel and yet I get 4 times the ram and 16 times the storage and more functionality - the point is the price is way too high for what it delivers from 2019

        • specs don't mean much in the content playback race unfortunately. I still get stuff on my odroid n2+/firestick 4k max that fails to playback and my nas fails (i5 8500t/16gb ram/16tb storage) to transcode that direct plays fine on a mates shield (this particular model). Not mention auto refresh rate switching and HDR playback issues I've run into that don't seem to appear anywhere near as often on his shield.

If you've got the requirements this is still the box to buy short of forking out quite a bit more for a NUC or a custom HTPC.

  • Just a simple question, all I want to do is stream games from my PC to TV from my Steam library. My Samsung TV does have Steam Link App for me to stream games in there. So is there a reason for me to get NVIDIA Shield TV Pro ? Or does NVIDIA Shield TV Pro have special features like I can play Goole Play games natively on TV too ? Please advise.

    • +1

If the Samsung Steamlink app is working okay for you, then no need to upgrade. But in my experience, apps including Steamlink just work better on the Shield due to more processing power, more updates etc. And yes the Shield can play some Android games (those that are designed for Android TV), Retroarch for emulation etc.

      • Thanking you :)

    • +1

YMMV but I've found Steam Link to run better on my Shield than on my Sony TV. Sony TV app seems to have audio delays that the Shield does not. No idea why.

      • Thanking you :)
