Dell 34 Curved Gaming Monitor – S3422DWG AMD FreeSync Premium Pro WQHD 144Hz $549 Delivered @ Dell eBay

1630
PSLDELL

Original Coupon Deal

I bought this monitor on the last deal for the same price delivered ($549). I was seriously looking at getting the Xiaomi 34", but ultimately, the well integrated USB hub and the one thing Dell does seem to still do well (quality) is in screens made me pull the trigger on this one. — Unlike the quality questions and airflow issues of the alienware desktops like the Aurora R12 3080TI I spent hours deliverating on a Techfast/BPC build vs the Dell… only to find out it is out of stock anyway.

Very happy with this 34" Freesync Premium screen. About to buy a second one.

  • can this charge/dock a macbook air m1?

    • The spec doesn't mention USB-C, then no :-(

It will charge (slowly) with the right cable but.not display via USB C

  • This or AOC u34g3x?

  • -4

    If only 4K.

    • +9

34 inch ultrawides don't typically use 4k resolutions. This is standard. I'd imagine doubling the pixel count on these kinds of monitors would probably triple or quadruple the price.

      • -4

It wouldn't be that big a difference (in pixel count)

        4k 4096 x 1716 is ~ 7Mp.
        This dell panel is 3440 x 1440 ~5Mp.

Edit: (It could be in price if the panel isn't common)

    • +1

Err how can you fit a 16:9 aspect ratio of 4K resolution into a 21:9 aspect ratio of a monitor?

      • +5

        Rectangular pixels?

        • Yes, that's one weird way to do it XD

      • 4k doesn't have to be 16:9

        https://www.wearethefirehouse.com/aspect-ratio-cheat-sheet

4096 × 1716 counts as 4k and is the same ratio used in this panel.

        • -1

Do you know of any ultrawide monitors available on the market now running at that odd 4096x1716 resolution?

          • @edfoo: Monitors available in that or not (i havent looked) doesn't really chance the point of what i posted. 4k isn't specifically 16:9.

            21:9 can be 4k.

            • -1

@Duff5000: Any aspect ratio can be 4K, but do we have any monitors other than 16:9 aspect ratio in 4K available? What's the point of talking about 4K monitors in 21:9 if they don't exist? Might as well talk about unicorn, fairy or leprechaun.

        • +2

Uh… Don't you typically scale the resolution with fixed height instead of width?

          Like 2560x1440 becomes 3440x1440.

          1920x1080 becomes 2560x1080.

If you bring the 16:9 resolution of 4k at 4096x2160p and just decrease vertical pixel count to fit ultrawide, it's a bit crap, no?

  • +5

Dell S3422DWG quality is not up to the mark with other Dell monitors is what I read. People reported some gap between plastic frame and screen. USB doesn't work magically, you need to connect between laptop and screen with a cable to have it working, so its more of a USB A hub. Rather a good USB C hub will do multiple displays, PD charging, other USB C's and A's, Memory Card readers, Ethernet Port, HDMI etc.. Based on the reviews on Ozbargain, mi 34 inch has got better build quality and better colours (more SRGB coverage) out of the box. Based on the reviews, I went with mi 34 inch and got it couple of weeks back and I have been happy.

    • +1

Just thought of providing an explanation as people starting to neg my coment above.

See alaskakyoto's comprehensive review between 2
Dell S3422DWG and Mi 34 inch curve monitors.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11339893/redir

My above comment was just between these two model, not in general dell vs mi. I use Dell Dell ultrasharp, Dell 4K 27 inch montors and dell latitude laptops, I absolutely love them. Just thought it would be useful for some to warn that dont expect the usual dell quality as reviewed by other users. I prefer dell in general.

      • I didn't neg you but I have to say his review is only one Xiaomi and one Dell sample in comparison, not enough to generalise the overall build quality and dead pixels.

        • +2

except his review brings up points that are 100% valid comparisons model to model. Build quality and dead pixels can vary unit to unit sure, but it is indicative of QA if you see more reviews similar to it. Either way, wonder why people are negging, its useful information.

    • I didn't neg you, but this:

"USB doesn't work magically, you need to connect between laptop and screen with a cable to have it working"

mean you have other devices where the USB connects to the system you are using wirelessly, the monitor doesn't register USB devices without [again] being attached to a computer, you can't chain another monitor via a USB cable from this one or is it a lack of power delivery supplied from the monitor's power supply?

I suspect someone may have conjoined your comparison of a bespoke full-featured USB hub together with your comparison of the Mi and the Dell - I never expected my S3220DGF's ports to be anything but an extension of my computer's port , as per the earlier iterations on my older higher specced WUXGA 1920 x 1200 ones, rather than an active 'break-out' box.

      • It acutally suprised me when I setup my s2721dgf that you needed a usb b to a cable when using tb 3/4. of yourse it made sense when I got to the dp cable amd hdmi cable.

Lots of people would need a separate connection for the usb hub and to have both wouldnt be worth the cost. Plus it would help distinguish higher end models that can use tb 4 alone.

A positive suprise I didnt expect was that the monitor's hub doesn't only draw power from the usb controller. I had 4 5tb drives doing sequanital write tests to try and discover if it there was any jump in current or instability but it didnt show ant problems.

Running 4 hard drives to a single 3.0 port isnt for everyone but it works well to copy to or to/from or organize old and new drives. Or watch archived shows /movies.

    • Agreed the quality is not quite up to what I expected. The first one Dell delivered died within the first week. The replacement that arrived after 3 weeks not has a constant flicker. Dell support has been good with replacement etc but I wish I just bought either an Alienware / Samsung / LG that would have had no issues despite the good price.

    RTINGS review
I've had this monitor for a few months now, has been pretty great and haven't had any major VA panel related ghosting issues that couldn't be resolved by changing a few settings.

    • Appreciate someone else linking this sort of data for a change. While the measurements aren't to be trusted, you can see in the motion pursuit capture that this is a really good VA panel compared to the last few years of models.

We've finally got an upgrade for VA that extends down to 144Hz, and it's great to see.

      • While the measurements aren't to be trusted

I'm curious, are there known issues with rtings for panel measurements? I know their headphone measurements can be potentially misleading, given they use their own arbitrary target.

        • +4

Their measurements are done by luminosity of the measured pixels, not by a closer analogue of how the human eye sees this. TFT Central, Hardware Unboxed and others have updated their testing procedure to better account for this, as well as narrowing the tolerance range to better reflect the human experience of pixel response. Check a5hun on YouTube for a detailed breakdown of the testing procedure.

For headphones, the only useful things they do are measure tonality, channel imbalance and clamping force. Their other measurements are dubious, and they pay no mind to the attack and decay of a driver, which has a big say in resolution and timbre (often a balancing act between the two).

Their target curve doesn't mean much at all no matter which whey they opt go, and it's mostly Harman anyway. Harman isn't the be all and end all, particularly for open back headphones, where distortion is likely to ensue given you don't have the bass resonance of a sealed enclosure.

          • +1

@jasswolf: Interesting, thanks for the reply!

          • -1

@jasswolf: they pay no mind to the attack and decay of a driver, which has a big say in resolution

To be fair, they ignore it because it’s irrelevant.

            • @seerious: Of course! The speed and acceleration at which the acoustic device starts and stops when producing sounds has zero impact in creating an authentic reproduction of instrumentation or vocals within a recorded space…

              What was I thinking??

                • @seerious: Oh wow, you produced a largely unreferenced article to support your argument that doesn't really delve into resonance or harmonics when assessing overall driver speed.

                  Try this instead: https://crinacle.com/2021/06/04/the-tonal-technical-dichotom…

                  • @jasswolf:

Oh wow, you produced a largely unreferenced article to support your argument

I have a lot of respect for Crinacle, but his discussion of attack and decay which you linked is also completely unreferenced. His entire piece only cites two articles: both related to distortion, not attack or decay. The section on technicalities is purely subjective, and he acknowledges this:

*But for whatever reason, at least in my own opinion, frequency response isn’t the be-all end-all when it comes to sound quality. There still seem to be some other phenomena going on that affects the characteristics of a transducer…

What is it then? You may cry. Truth to the matter is… nobody who has personally observed these non-FR differences has a clue, me included… In effect here is where the objectivist community shun me and I move my butt firmly back on the centrist fence.*

In this context it's pretty rich of you to deride the soundstage article as unreferenced.

Can you produce any papers supporting your assertions that attack or decay makes an audible difference to "resolution and timbre"? I'd genuinely be interested to read them if so.

                    • @snep: That's fair, I could have sworn it had more references at some point, but I was going off memory when I grabbed the link to post. I still think it does a much better job of accounting for such things (and how they can impact one another, the balancing of which is the true challenge of headphone design today).

As for academic research it's not my wheelhouse, so I don't have anything off hand, so I'll have to dig in at some point and see what I can find. It's my firm belief that the ultimate headphone would involve either the ability to smoothly change impulse response to the signal (maybe ribbon would be the closest today?) or multiple drivers to generate the ideal impulse response for a portion of the frequency range.

For the latter, there's a lot of technical challenges, with the utmost being MEMS technology to deliver a near-seamless experience, perhaps even an affordable digital speaker driver.

If I dig anything up, I'll DM you, because we're on a massive tangent from the deal thread.

                      • @jasswolf:

I don't have anything off hand, so I'll have to dig in at some point and see what I can find

In that case, maybe don't claim your opinions are proven fact while insulting others who disagree. It's a pretty poor look and misleads those who might not know so much about audio.

                        • @snep: I made a mistake about the article's sourcing, but the concept that FR is not the beginning and end of determining detail level from a headphone is empirically proven.

FR is important and good or bad FR can make or break a headphone, but it's absurd to dismiss how a driver physically moves as not being essential to how it delivers notes, and I cannot stress that enough.

              • @jasswolf: I suppose you expect taut animal skins on those drumheads rather than a decent bit of linen…

                • -1

@terrys: No, I expect someone to have used their ears (and in the case of animal skins, their morals) to assess the material choice, because audio measurement isn't at a point where you can break down everything happening in a recording from any given chain.

We can play around with test tones and maybe single notes in a defined recording space, but breaking down what's happening in anything more complex remains in the research/academic realm presently, with machine learning perhaps unlocking models for analysis in the future.

This dingus above thinks that you can see all you need to see - or can possibly see today - in detailed frequency response graphs, which is complete horse shit and has been repeatedly disproven.

                  • @jasswolf: You need to stop saying things like it’s repeated disproven.

Here’s Dr Olives take on resolution:

                    https://mobile.twitter.com/seanolive/status/1223707631824424…

It’s cool that you want to believe this stuff. Other hobbyists like Crin, Resolve and Metal do too… but both Olive and Oratory, as well as notable hobbyists such as Amir, Brent and Oluv are very much telling us it’s purely down to FR.

I personally don’t care if you choose to believe in some mystical, unmeasurable properties. But I don’t like how you spread it around here like it’s an agreed-upon science.

                    • @seerious: I respect Dr Olive, but that doesn't make him the font of all knowledge. While he's right that bass resonance/distortion can get in the way (mostly of clarity), that's not what resolution is.

We're talking physics here, and what I'm describing holds up to logic. We cannot rely on a single measurement from a single device to devise this, or you end up with RTings deciding what the best headphone is, which has been shown time and time again to be really, really foolish.

  • +1

I have this monitor and have been very happy with it. One of the main reasons I went with it over the Xiaomi and Gigabyte is that the curve isn't as extreme.

  • Got one of these second hand last week for $300. Pretty nice monitor but no speakers unfortunately

Edit: bit of a stuff around when mounting to a flat surface though as the vesa mount system is recessed. Makes it tricky to mount to a racing sim for example

  • Just be aware of the postage time when you order. I purchased one through the previous deal and it has an estimated date of December 30 - January 7. It ended up being shipped on the 29 of November but Startrack lost my monitor, and I'm still awaiting a replacement.

  • I bought this monitor recently too, added the rtings colour profile but otherwise a little unsure about optimum settings, for those who have it and commenting, do you run with windows hdr setting on all time or otherwise feel like posting your best settings for general or gaming use 🙂 I read to use super fast setting for gaming but hdr on locks out settings which confused further

    • Why do you really want to run in HDR mode? This monitor is not true HDR.

      • Out of the box it looked better when turning that mode on but only comparing against a hd background, don't know a lot about monitors so was asking questions, happy for guidance, none of the reviews I watched seem to want to tell you much about the settings they use

        • So they weren't really reviews at all.

  • -1

    VA or IPS?

  • Is this monitor the same size as two 24 inch 16:9 screens side by side?

    • +2

No. It's the same height as a 16:9 27 inch monitor, but about 30% wider.

  • +1

I can also vouch the quality of the monitor and enjoying it for the last 3 months

  • +1

$583 on dell .. use / buy coupons and can bring it down to under $490 approx

Not sure if meta7 is still working

  • Is this substantially better than Xiaomi Mi 34" monitor?

    • -2

Yes much better imo. Just looking at specs reviews, i haven't used either of them.

  • would have been perfect if it had usb-c thunderbolt connectivity as well..

    • Where did you see it referred to as a pro gaming monitor? Also I don't see the big deal with no HDMI 2.1 for PS5/XBSX when the screen is a 21:9 ultrawide - unless you want to play with black bars or a stretched image, this monitor probably isn't the best choice for console gamers in the first place.

      • -2

It’s in the description, Let’s take Fortnite for example, the console detects the screen res and adjusts the FOV to match no stretch or black bars, it could be considered an advantage. Shame 2.1 is still not standard these days

      • +1

Also the fact that 1440p gaming doesn't need HDMI 2.1

Was tempted by this for halo. But the lack of 21:9 support for the series X plus the 20-25% frame rate hit for the laptop probably means I stick to a traditional 16:9.

    • +2

This has nothing to do with the intent of posting this deal, that is to post something at a great price for a purpose.

The purpose is PC gaming. The price for the spec and brand is good. Ding ding we've got a deal!

I don't think even current consoles can do ultrawide res in any games so why bother with the cost of HDMI 2.1 ports? Sure you could black bar it but then why not just go and find a more expensive ultrawide monitor that does have HDMI 2.1 and move on? It'll cost you more but does that negate this deal?
Even if they did it'd be limited to 120Hz (not 144) as that is all the console will output.

For anyone who doesn't care for console being limited to 60Hz, this is still a great monitor. Anyway for consoles you are better to go buy a big 16:9 4K 120Hz panel like I did :D

  • -1

Bought this monitor and love it very dearly. Thought I had an issue with the video stuttering and not registering but that's because I didn't plug the power in properly haha. The only downside is no speakers which I assumed it came with and have to work around it

  • -1

the one thing Dell does seem to still do well (quality) is in screens

  • +3

A lot of people here stressing about usb ports for charging. I can't relate. It is pretty easy to get charging equipment and usb hubs. I wouldn't be swayed by that when picking a gaming monitor.

I've had mine for almost two months. Colours are great, picture clear, plenty of brightness. Only issue is (see the rtings review) that Freesync doesn't play well with 60fps and lower. So you can get a stutter when switching from games to menus. Not really a problem though. Highly recommend.

    • It may be to do with having nothing on the desk not related to gaming to reduce clutter - a sort of " clear field"…

  • Any idea how the freesync premium works with gsync? Any fps issues (does it start to fail with too high or low frame rates?)

    • Same question here.

  • Anyone know if any of these 34 Ultrawides use RGBLED? I have a U2713H next to my current U3415W and the colour difference is crazy. The 27 (RGBLED) is just so much more vibrant than the 34 (WLED). I end up watching movies on the 27, just because they look so much better.

  • Recently bought one of these - any recommendations for monitor arms that can withstand the weight?

  • I am selling few dell coupons .. if any interested might bring down the cost to under $500

    • Selling Dell coupons?

      • Yep got one $160 one

        • Right thanks. I don’t think this OzB site allows us to buy coupons privately right?

          • @edfoo: Classified are allowed .. I believe

            I posted in there

  • Was debating this vs a 4k 144Hz monitor with a RTX 3080 but went for this instead, good value
