Eyeing this for a while, I use an unknown brand (below) for desktop biometrics unlocking of password managers and to use with Windows Hello to log onto windows.

Worthwhile mentioning I bought a cheaper version from an unknown brand a while back which seems to work well enough as well! Was plug and play for this one - no drivers required but $25 is the standard price. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08DCFMSLG

  • Is this the same as the desktop version minus the case and cable?

Or the Verimark IT multiple PCs

    Dont do it
Garbage device, need dodgy drivers for it to work and even then its less than 50/50 if its actually going to read your finger prints.

Thanks - was thinking of it as an impulse buy but not it's flaky.

Although recent amazon reviews suggest that the drivers are now available from windows update not needing to be manually installed?

    • This pretty much mirrors my experience with the device. It's a bit more reliable than 50/50, but it is one of the most frustrating fingerprint readers that I have used.

I could never get the FIDO U2F functions to work. Overall, I would not recommend it.

    • Same, wish I had tried it during the return window.

  • I have one of these, works well enough but it was a bit of a nuisance to get running on Win 11 for reasons that escape me at the moment.

    • Was that the dreaded "database full" issue?

      • I think I just had trouble finding the right drivers for it

    • for reasons

Probably drivers and the requirement to interface with Windows security functions.

That's the Home Office version… and reviews aren't kind (flimsy/unreliable/made of plastic). The "was" price is not accurate, as it's the IT version that's normally available for around $100 (metal build, better quality scanner).

The IT one is also on sale ($63.40).

    • Thanks for commenting - I think I'll pass. Plenty of other BF things to spend money on and it's only Monday!!

  • i have one cheap one like this from aliexpress, works fine 95% of the time. sometimes cant recognise just minor issue but otherwise im happy no need to enter passcode/word - laptop with windows 10

    • you have a link to the one you got?

  • Maybe I just got lucky. But I had no issues at all with this that I grabbed half a year back for ~30$

Didn’t even have it connected directly to my laptop. Had it in one usb hub which is in turn hooked up to another powered usb hub thats connected to the laptop usb port.

Originally installed on windows10. Had since upgraded to windows 11 and the windows hello & drivers carried over and worked flawlessly.

  • I have one of these and have never had issues with it. Much more reliable than the fingerprint reader on my Note 10 Plus.

Sounds like results may vary from user to user (or device to device) though.

  • I've got one of the cheapies too (not the one listed here) and it has been flawless with windows 11. $25 to save typing my password each time worth it!

  • Note: Windows Hello only, no Linux or Mac support whatsoever. Need driver to be installed (driver via Windows Update, but requires admin rights) and it’s 2FA implementation is software based and your 2FA credentials stays on the PC you’ve plugged in, so don’t use it as a Yubikey replacement.

  • Just happened to be looking at this now. Was trying to work out if the Verimark IT was worth the extra $ for future use, even if overkill for my needs now.
My intended use is a fingerprint reader for KeePass as I'm opening it multiple times a day usually. So long as it works with Windows Hello it should work via the KeePass plugin.

The reviews on these are so mixed. Some say it works great, some say it doesn't work at all. I was thinking the Verimark IT might be handy one day as a passwordless FIDO2 device and has a newer chipset but now wondering if I should just get the no name $25 one as it will probably do the job anyway (I'm thinking it's really down to the cheapie or the Verimark IT)

Can anyone with either one of the Kensingtons or a cheapie tell me how fast is the read? Just a tap like on phones, or is there a considerable delay until it recognises?

    • +1

its superfast for me. no delay.

      • Cheers, yeh after digging through the reviews I saw a video of it, pretty much instant.
