Not helpful this bad or good ?

      • +12

        Always prefer Snapdragon

      • Mediatek is perfectly especially these days where custom ROMs ain't really a thing anymore.

People love to complain but don't want to shell out for snapdragons.

        • +12

custom ROMs are still definitely a thing tho?

        • +2

What do you mean custom roms arent a thing? Every nerdy friend I know, or 'china phone enthusiast' i talk to is running a 'better' rom.

          Plenty of mediatek roms too.

          • @MasterScythe: you said the key work "nerdy" …. some people aren't that into phones and just use them …… same with wine, seems only 5% of wine consumers read wine magazines ….. the other 95% just buy wine and drink it and don't read about it ……..

            • @garage sale:

some people aren't that into phones and just use them

I dont understand. That statement could literally be changed to anything, and still be true.

Do you feel that should devalue the interests of those who are?

              If so, why?

The same people who used custom roms still do. They were never mainstream. I worked at a major telco when android was young. Was never stereotype grandma nor soccer mum who had custom roms.

What you say is correct, but im not sure what point you're trying to make?

If even one developer exists, its still 'really a thing'.

      • +4

        If you game, bad.

If you do a lot of image work, good.

But the difference between this and the SD competitor is miniscule, so its not really an issue in daily use.

      • +1

Some people like to reflash their phones to different streams of android … phone enthusiatists…. those users preffer snapdragon ………..if you just want a phone and get updates from motorola, and load your apps from the playstore it's all good ….. I used to reflash my Xiaomi in the old days, now I just use a phone and spend the rest of my time doing other stuff ….. it's a phone.

        • i used to flash my phone too but find it was too buggy compare to stock rom.

          • +1

@superuser: Its always interesting when you hear other user experiences.
They can literally be so polarizing, its intriguing.

Personally, so long as I stuck to large projects (like cyanogenmod/lineageos) ive never had a crash on my phones.

These days I just roll my own, roms are so quick to make these days.

I wonder what was different between our approaches.

        • +1

          it's a phone

          Thats the difference.

A lot of people consider their smartphones much more of a multi tool than "a phone".

I like to compile nix based operating systems; so to me, "it's a mini computer".

I honestly think 'phone' is the least used feature for me.

          those users preffer snapdragon

Ive developed my own roms for years.
Can you explain why you believe this is true?
          Ive never encountered this.

Comes with a good set of accesories in the box for $398.
Headset, protective cover, charger and cable.
My S21s came with nothing in the box like this one.
The only thing I can find wrong is HN, but can buy elsewhere and price match.

      • +3

I would use the headphones. Go through cheap headphones for running.
But I'm surprised that they include headset.
Protective cover is potentially the most useful thing.

But agree these chargers, cables, etc build up and end up being landfill/waste of money. (They cost around $5 for each accessory at officeworks etc.)
I would rather the phone be say $15 cheaper

        • +4

Cover is super handy as they are specific to that model and it's nice to have cover from day one .
Personally find included headphones terrible .
The rest of the crap is as you say "land fill"

          • +2

@troyww: Understand that it's quite a niche phone to find a case for but it's not a good enough quality case to last. It's basically a case to use until your case from eBay etc arrives and then gets relegated to spare at best.

Haven't tried out this particular phones case, but it's largely an issue across the board.

      • +2

I personally find the cover to be adequate, however would prefer they just ship them separately and let the store hand them out as needed. So many people I know throw out the free tpu cover as they're too flimsy for them.

Also agree entirely on the crappy earphones. If anyone wants a $5 pair, they'll go and buy one themselves! I have so far accumulated about 20 pairs from various phones/people that don't ant them.

        • let the store hand them out as needed.

This is a much better option to try and implement, wouldn't even really cost any more. Only thing is you'd have to ship less cases than phones otherwise it's pointless, which begs the question how much to send

      • The case is a gel case, so its brilliant to have from day 1 to prevent drop damage.

Previous gel cases have been godsends; i dont see how this would be different.

As for headset, I didnt. i have plenty of headphones, because im a bit of an audio nerd, but none of them have an inlike mic. So i'll likely use that in the car.

        • -5

          I'm sorry but what

im a bit of an audio nerd
As for headset, I didnt. none of them have an inline mic

Not sure if you can count yourself an audiophile or "audio nerd" if you have to rely on this cheap shit for such a basic feature almost every pair of earphones have.

If you can't hear the sound quality difference all your other headphone purchases have been a mistake unless they were less than $10.

          • @pennypincher98: No need to apologise mate.

Im not going to carry a headphone amplifier with me everywhere I go mate, cheapies for the car or on the bike are best.

You dont wanna leave a couple of grand, or even a couple of hundred sitting in the car if you're going somewhere you dont need them.

            • @MasterScythe: So the obvious alternative is to buy headphones borderline unusable. They sell them for $1.75 at Kmart (and they're probably better quality tbh) if that's all you are needing.

Unless you're facing significant financial hardship, I'm sure your budget can extend to $10 or $20.

              • @pennypincher98:

So the obvious alternative is to buy headphones borderline unusable. They sell them for $1.75 at Kmart

Why can't i use the included ones?

                • @MasterScythe: You can, they'd be similar quality to the $1.75 Kmart ones.

These aren't earpods. Nor are they what Samsung included in boxes like the S series or HTC the M or U series. Those were all perfectly usable. In fact, HTC Usonic earphones became my daily commuting pair. Including headphones with an inbuilt DAC, active noise cancellation etc was amazing.

I've had a similar Moto and tried to use the included earphones. Cheap creaky plastic that hurts ears after being in for not that long, no noise cancellation, low volume and appalling sound reproduction.

Maybe I should've clarified my position to be "only include headphones if they're worthwhile and not just landfill" but let's be honest. Any company that used to make usable included headphones has stopped doing so.

                  • @pennypincher98:

You can, they'd be similar quality to the $1.75 Kmart ones.

I just went and bought the cheapest set from kmart, and no, the included ones are better.
                    Returned the kmart ones.
You're welcome to your opinion, but I wouldn't go suggesting the kmart option as a good one.

As a side note, the $1.75 ones do not include an inlike mic, so the closest kmart competitor I just tried was actually $4.50.

Popping them into my amp and testing, they seem to be WAY lower impedance so peak and limit MUCH MORE with the high-pitched crackle that is a 3G voice call.
Not recommended, motorollas included ones are better for calls.

While music opinions are always subjective; I found the 8khz sparkle to be WAY too sharp (but I usually do), however the 1Khz and 2Khz "Amaze" samples (I enjoy a lot of electronic music, so Its easy to know roughly what exact frequency they were playing) performed admirably. Both suffered down low; but the motorolla was more responsive in the low mids.

I think the low impedance of the kmart pair meant the highs easily overpowered the mids, I'm sure I could fix it with a custom EQ, or, you know, just use the darn included ones.

Either way, I have a large range for good listening, and some wireless AptXHD enabled buds for things like exercise; These included ones are mainly for calls IMO, and they were less pitchy than the cheap kmart ones.

                    ymmv.

                    • -1

@MasterScythe: You just went and bought the cheapest set from Kmart in about 35 mins and had time to do extensive testing on them.

                      Sure Jan.

Btw you've missed my whole point. It wasn't to test the $1.75 Kmart earphones lmao (which I don't have).

                      • @pennypincher98: No, nothing extensive. Hence why I have no figures for you, other than what my test tracks reveal.

Walked next door to the kmart, walked home, plugged them in, had a listen, noted the volume position on the amp was much lower (suggesting lower impedance), and listened to my 3 favorite test tracks.

Its like… 15 mins of fun, toward my favorite hobby, on a lazy Sunday; why is that hard to believe?

My name's not Jan, and you're not making a clear point.

they'd be similar quality to the $1.75 Kmart ones.

Im telling you from experience, your subjectively wrong. The ones that cheap dont even have a mic.
And the $4.50 ones are notably lesser quality.

                        • -1

                          @MasterScythe:

                          My name's not Jan

                          Lol it's called a reference.

And the $4.50 ones are notably lesser quality.

Why don't you keep testing all the headphones in your local Kmart while you're at it because that's a 'fun' thing for you to do?

                          • @pennypincher98:

                            Lol it's called a reference.

Ooo i love references; to what?

Im a walking 90s simpsons library :p haha.

The only "Jan" reference I know is the yellowpages 'not happy Jan'; which isnt relevant here, since I didnt fail to follow a request.

I like my references; pretty please educate me, what one am I missing? (I may want to use it :p)

Why don't you keep testing all the headphones in your local Kmart while you're at it.

I tested all last seasons, but none of them were any good, so I never even bothered trying to sell articles about them.
"These are bad, end article". No publication is buying that. (Actually, the wireless $20 or so airpod knockoffs were 'fine' for their price, I used them to make some wireless bookshelf speakers using external amps; fun project!)

So to answer your question more directly:

While its fun when someone suggests you test a specific model, the time to test and review a whole range is better spent on import models from the likes of banggood, or even Kogan, where i'll be able to sell the articles.

Blitzwolf do some pretty decent 'cheapies' as an example.

Fun is fun, but sometimes you gotta get something for your time other than just pleasure.

                            • @MasterScythe:

                              Im a walking 90s simpsons library :p

Ah that must be why, it's a Brady Bunch reference (well technically 90's remake but eh). Here's some context - just ignore the shitty editing the YouTuber has done at the end :P

There's also countless memes/gifs of it too if that's more up your alley :)

PS not happy Jan is great too xD

      • +2

I like that my phone came with accessories and not one of my cables are in landfill, I use them around the house and in the car.

Stop trying to justify the fact your crappy phone came with nothing. 😂

        • What about the headphones, which is what I was actually saying lmao.

Providing cables are great, all my phones have come with cables.

            @CptnObvious: I think you misread.

In regards to you "Australian Icon" comment, that seems pretty bloody unaustralian to me. I was raised to be fair. Mateship to me always meant (near) equality, where possible.

The original hate came from his sooking about no GST on low value imports.

He was the main drive crying that his profits fell because people were buying whitegoods overseas and he was sad about it.

Now we have 10% added to literally everything, that is neither an Australian good, nor Australian service.

When AU starts manufacturing micro boards for RC projects, i'll happily pay the 10% more for them.

Nothing other than beeing a greedy old fart that made him increase our weekly hobby costs by 10% regardless of if it was available locally or not.

seem JB have the same price $1 extra…lol. Do a price beat with Officeworks $398 as well

  • +3

Really wish Google forced an Android One option on all phones ¬¬ I mean 2 years of security updates is a bit trash at best, and basically just a forced obsolescence. Android one/lineage could easily keep the phone going for 3-5 years (depending on use, battery, etc.)

    • Android One was designed for cheap mass-market phones in developing countries. Mainly for companies that can't be bothered with software development and maintenance. It also spawned Android Go.

You don't need it to have a decent update program:
Samsung - 3 yrs major updates (S series), 4 yrs security for all products
      Google - 3 yrs

    • +1

You already touched on the answer though :)

Just install Lineage when the official support ends.

    • I love my android One phone ……

    Thanks OP.
Just got one for $378.10 with price beat from Office works.

    • OW is now price matched at $398.00. How did you get them to price beat?

      • Yeah same price as OW.

      • I showed them the link from Harvey Norman and they did it 😊

      • +4

Office works almost automatically price adjust state wide when someone shows an "approved" competitor.

If it was, mobileciti or something, there would be a review process, etc etc.

But when its HN, or JB or EB, etc. Its almost always reflected state wide within minutes.

Tldr: op price matched, before OW did it themselves.

      • +1

comes down to the sales person you get and if they are feeling generous

  • Specs wise how does this compare with Poco x3 Pro?

    • +7

Poco has a faster flagship-level processor (SD860), the MediaTek in this is comparable to SD765

This has AMOLED screen, Poco is LCD

This has clean, unbloated Android, Poco has MIUI which I dislike. But the Poco will have much better custom ROM support if you want to go down that path.

Cameras are probably about the same

This is local stock with warrenty etc, no waiting.

      • Thanks Triamble.

  • this phone mainly good for just screen and battery at this price point, other features are really not that great

    • Gcam shows the camera has potential, just needs their stock app worked on.

Its main appeal is how it all has come together, at that price point.

  • So I've done some digging as I was about to buy this for my dad; seems like maybe MediaTek SoC is not as good as the equivalent Snapdragon when it comes to signal strength/range? Can anyone confirm this? Dad lives in rural Victoria, pretty important to have stronger coverage if reasonably possible in the same price range.

Largely going off the first two sentences in the conclusion of this article: https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/qualcomm-4-6-and-7-series-resha…

In 2021 COVID induced shortages left OEMs scrambling for SoCs and the significant number of MediaTek Dimensity 700 and 800 SoCs used in value and mid-range phones. There is nothing wrong with that, but Qualcomm has the proven ability to get far stronger 4 and 5G signal strengths – precisely what a big country needs.

Slightly confusing though because the same site's review says it will support all 5G low-band frequencies, but then says:

The MediaTek modem and antenna system are strictly for city and suburban use. It’s the same with any Dimensity 800U.

    • +1

Yes, this is the thing putting me off getting this. No real reviews of regional reception.
I normally go with older blue tick phones and be done with it. But I am not liking the current offerings. It seems only samsung is capable of blue tick these days, but most of their phones have a premium price tag.

      • Doing some further research, the OPPO A54 has a (lower end) Snapdragon SoC and is well reviewed from the same outlet. Currently $350 at JB

        • +1

Biggest catch for most, is that OPPO isn't usually a stock vanilla Android experience.

Though, ColourOS is one of the 'cleanest' skins\roms out there at least.

    • As a hobby rc pilot, I know a little about reception… i also install long range wifi…but not a lot of info specific to phones, besides frequencies and such…

With my 'credentials' out of the way, the SoC i can only imagine having a very minimal impact on reception.

The antenna is 100% of whats actually receiving the signal, if the SoC has less gain, you might end up with shorter, but clearer range? Or if transmit power is lower, you might get a "i can hear you, but you cant hear me" scenario? Its all guess work without testing; but the educated guess says the difference would be miniscule, if SoC was the only change.

Check telstras phone range, and see if any meditek is "blue tick" (rural approved). That'll give you a good idea of whether or not it can handle rural.

      • Qualcomm make the modem chips beside the snapdragon SOC, they are separate chips, mediatek is a SOC, you need to check which modem chip is used and antenna and supported bands if you are worried about reception ….. Samsung have their own SOC in some of their phones and apple don't use snapdragon but they do use Qualcomm modem chips….. which they are going to dump in favour of their own ….

      • Unfortunately as far as I can tell the only phones getting a blue tick these days are the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21+ (could be wrong but Telstra's website is a POS so it's hard to search properly). Dad's not really comfortable spending that much

        • As a cheap phone for parents, the "telstra" phones are amazing value.

Sub $100 (buy from coles or woolies), almost all are blue tick, and the higher end ones are more than enough for a user whos never going to split screen apps or render video.

Im making assumptions about your dad, sure, but usually when us 'kids' are doing the buying, we're in similar boats.

          https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/pre…

The "essential" range is shocking usable and snappy these days, otherwise the samsung a21s or a22 is a good choice for 'parent use'.

  • +1

I am looking for a 5G phone with dual sim and NFC 128GB.
Any good recommendation beside this Edge 20 Fusion?
How does Edge 20 Fusion compare with Samsung A22?
Do you expect it to go further down in Boxing Day (under $398)

    • Just the things I can immediately find:

A22 has lower res screen, less RAM, slower less efficienct MediaTek processor, lacks 5G, lower res camera (not that that necessarily means worse photos because the megapixel numbers have just gotten way out of hand and are now more about marketing).
