New iPhone XR for $599 or refurbished XS for $599?

    • +3

I'd go new XR. I'm always sceptical on what refurbished actually means (do they pull it apart and look for things like signs of corrosion? Do they look at how many cycles the battery has done? Do they look for signs of screen burn in? Etc). Plus having a proper warranty is always nice.

        https://www.apple.com/au/shop/refurbished/about

        For your reading pleasure.
        “Here’s what you get.
You will receive a “like new” device with genuine Apple replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Refurbished iOS devices will come with new battery and outer shell. Every device will come with all accessories, cables and operating systems.1 All Apple Certified Refurbished products are packaged in a brand new white box and will be sent to you with free shipping and returns.”

        • +11

That is for Apple-refurbished devices. Coles are not selling Apple-refurbished devices. They are refurbished by "Green Gadgets". There is no way you get a new battery and outer shell on these devices.

          • +3

            @mister_snrub: Oops. Sorry about that.

            • +7

@try2bhelpful: That's okay. You were living true to your username and I didn't neg you.

              • +1

@mister_snrub: I had a brain fade. Got to admit I wouldn’t get a refurb unless it was by Apple itself. I should’ve twigged, Apple Australia doesn’t tend to refurb phones. Maybe they have a better secondary market elsewhere.

              • -7

@mister_snrub: Yeah, frankly I don’t give a shit about negs.

            • +2

@try2bhelpful: I don't have a problem with refurbished products by the manufacturer because generally they actually have access to genuine parts and know the ins and outs of their products.

The XS was a better phone.

But a new XR is (probably) a better phone these days than the mystery meat that is a refurb XS purchased from Coles

        • -1

I had an XR as a work phone and was then supplied by an XS. I am no apple iphone fan, so take anything I say with a grain of salt, but the older XR is a far better phone than the measly small XS. Battery on the XS is woeful compared to XR.

The good news is, on Thursday I get to put it in a box and it goes back to my employer.

Coles new website to compete with Woolworths, Aldi….

Where's the competition in asking 600 for a preowned phone from years ago?

    • -6

Because Apple and people will pay $600 for a 3 year old refurb if it has the logo

Edit: iPhone 7 was $169 in July at Coles. Think they should keep with this method, cheap Apple logo for kids status points.

      • +11

Yeah, it’s definitely the logo. Couldn’t possibly be that people like using iPhones. Everyone is a sheep except you, boss.

        • -3

Name another phone brand that a retailer would sell a 3 year old phone at $600.

Yes Apple products tend to hold their value well and yes many people like using iPhones but that's irrelevant. This is Coles hoping to profit off people. Other places selling much lower.

If it's such a great deal, why haven't we seen more upvotes? The iPhone 7 deal was great to give to your kid, $169 and it's a cool phone they'll be happy to use. Or to elderly - a big screen, easy to use phone with everything they need.

          • @pennypincher98:

This is Coles hoping to profit off people.

            …as opposed to?

          • @pennypincher98: Go touch some grass, bro. Get away from screens for a bit.

            • -2

@jjcf: Lol you say this right as I had a 6 hour shift, but sure I'm the one that needs to get off screens lmao. Love the fact you resorted to such a generic response because you had no answer to my questions.

              Btw

              …as opposed to?

The other places that don't have such ridiculous margins? Thought that was clear.

Love how all the Apple fanboys came and negged me but this deal has a net upvote of 2 (excluding the OP's automatic vote). The community obviously doesn't believe this is a good deal 😂

    • +4

Apple tends to hold it's value well with phones.

      • Yes because there are still usable and get updates after a few years

  • I honesty cannot see the deal.

    • +6

Loss of peripheral or side vision: This is usually the first sign of glaucoma.

  • +2

Deal? I should have gone to specssavers

  • +2

I wonder what the battery health would be on these.

    • +1

none of them have anything replaced, so it would be the original battery… and on such an old phone that should be the biggest concern.

  • +3

Much cheaper on eBay and can use discounted GCs (even 256GB option is a fair bit cheaper) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/324775898349

    • +2

Rough neg. At least coles have a bricks and mortar setup and 30 day return. That seller could just as easily give you an ass up phone.

      • +5

Don't see how it's a rough neg. They have the same 30 day return policy (free returns) and same 12 month warranty.

Not sure the point of a brick and mortar store if you can't return it there anyway.

We can’t accept returns in Coles stores. Products must be returned directly to the supplier.

  • +2

NOT actually refurbished, just used, with old battery. Just cleaned, not even original accessories.

A genuine refurb from Apple has a new battery, and looks new, sold here: (when they have stock)
    https://www.apple.com/au/shop/refurbished

The good news is they promise the phones have not been repaired with aftermarket parts, which can be a problem.

    • +2

AFAIK Apple has never sold refurbished iPhones in Australia

      • +1

        bummer. So nobody has?

  • Amazon has had these for 569 for a long time.

  • +1

I just sold my mint condition XS Max 256gb for $550 on Facebook. I don’t see the value of a refurbished iPhone at this price unless they swapped a new battery in it

    • +1

Sold mine last week for $600 and took an 2014 MBAir and iPhone 7 128gb as trade in addition. Flipped them both the next day for $250 to family. Always see what else they will toss in to close the gap or topup the offer as you just never know!

      • +4

        Damn bro, you're savage lol

  • +1

Without a genuine new battery in it, it's a hard pass from me at this price.

  • -1

wonder how much my 512 xsmax can sell, always in the case and protected.

    • i bought 1 for $550 from ebay about 10 months ago
