2480

Laptop with RTX3060 below $1,200 is a bargain!

The last cheapest one in the last few months was $1,149 (refurbished - not exactly an apple to apple comparison with this new one) at Acer refurbished site.

EDIT: Dont forget to claim the Marvel Guardian of Galaxy Digital Code from Acer

          • @RangaWal: Yes, the initial sale would be around $1600 (Edu store) which is $1400 after EDUCOMM discount. It should hopefully drop this month. It could go lower during Black Friday, but that's always a risk.

        • Can you get an equivalent or slightly better Lenovo laptop through the education store using that code?

Or do they only sell computers that are more productivity based?

      • +1

If you want your son to get good grades, don't buy a gaming capable computer.

Trust me, best way to get a low ATAR is to have distractions present.

Unless your son has an iron will this laptop will do more harm than good.

        • -1

lolwut, his son is a human not a robot.

          • +2

@adam149: Different strokes for different folks. My son has a gaming laptop and is doing very well academically. We do regulate his usage at home. Schoolwork first, leisure time second. Gaming becomes an incentive and reward. Although imposed upon him, it still helps to build intrinsic motivation and accommodate to delayed gratification. We're transitioning to a responsibility model. If he makes responsible decisions consistent with all that, we don't mind being more flexible. So long as we see him developing a love of learning and self-development, and skills like resilience and adaptability, he should do well. Some career paths are dependent upon ATAR and entrance into traditional tertiary studies, but tomorrow's careers and emerging industries provide alternative pathways that are very accessible to most bright young people who would pursue them.

Ordered 12pm. Still no pick-up email. I am in WA.

    • Got mine this arvo after ordering in the morning - call store if need in a rush

    • Try to call their online order support. Their C&C should be ready in an hour. I think the email confirmation for you might get stuck but your order is actually ready to be collected.

  • How does one go about updating the BIOS of this laptop so it's 95W instead of 85W?

  • if i am not happy after purchase, can i return it?

    • +1

Harvey Norman doesn't take change of mind returns 99% of the time

  • +6

Just got mine from HN Auburn. Ready to collect in 1 hour (ordered at 3pm today).

For those who use Nicehash, I'm able to get around 42.5 - 42.7Mh/s. Here are the steps:

    1. Update the bios to 2.06. Mine arrived with 2.01
    2. Download this vbios and follow the instruction inside
      https://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/Firmware/Firmw…

This vbios will unlock the gpu tdp to 95w

    • What is the temp of GPU when mining? Is it very loud on max fan spinning? Thanks.

      • +1

I set cpu and gpu fans to 50% in nitro sense.
Gpu temp is 66, vram is 62. Has been mining for 3 hours with 1300 clock and 8750 vram limit

        • That looks not too bad. I thought it would be like 70-80 deg c on vram.

        • +1

          I couldn't drop my fans below 4000rpm
          Did you update nitrosense?

          • @Lonewolf1983: You can try to place the laptop in tent mode (fold the laptop like a v shape and place up side down)

            • @HT10: Yeah am in tent mode, just the nitro sense slider doesn't go below 4000rpm, weird

          • @Lonewolf1983: I think you can only set a %, I have my coolboost on and I noticed that when the laptop is not under load, even when set to 50% it will ramp down the fans. Perhaps your environment is hotter?

            I'm clocked at -150/+1800 for 43.5MH/s

            • @peter05: What temps are you getting with these settings?

              • +1

@Tavisophical: depends on ambient, on a 25ish day it'll be up around 64-65, on a cooler day it will be down at 61-62, 30-40% fans on cooler days and 40-50% fans on warmer ones

        • +1

hey HT10 - what are you using to Set core clock and Mem Limit ?

Afterburner doesnt seem to let the core clock stick ?

    • Do you use them 24/7 for mining only?

      • Yeah, just don't have time for gaming now. I got essentially free electricity as it bundled in my rent.

    • Do you have Samsung or hynix vram?

      • I got hynix, very stable overclocking.

        • wow,you didi really well then

I heard hynix version usually maxed out at 40m

        • +1

I figured it out, it's not necessarily just the VBIOS update to 2.06, there's also a firmware update v101a which needs to be applied to get 95w

          I'm now getting 41mh/s at 95w

    • anyone on quickminer got Nvidia driver too low message?

      • Yes, update to latest nvidia driver

        • I used the driver initially from the Acer website but no help and used the one from Nvidia official website

    • how is the laptop for gaming?

  • Just got the laptop today and started playing Witcher 3 on High Settings.
Looking at the temperatures from Nitrosense, the CPU temp went to 90 degrees and GPU went to 70-75 degrees celcius.
    Is that normal?
I haven't upgraded the BIOS or added an extra ram yet, would that make a difference?

    • I have just updated the BIOS to get 95W.
The temperatures are still high for Witcher 3.
Medium settings tend to bring the CPU temps to around 80 and GPU to 63. Is that considered normal?

    • +1

Although a tad bit high, that is within normal operating range for all gaming laptops. I'm sure you could lower those temps with some tinkering of the fan settings, though.

Is the laptop elevated? Best thing you can do is always keep the back of the unit propped with a book or something for optimal airflow and regularly clean the fans out every month.

How have they not sold out yet? Ol Harvey must have bought over 1000 of these bad boys sheesh

    • it may have been well over 9000

  • Is this a good upgrade over my MSI GE62 6QD Apache Pro 16gb, i7 6700HQ, GTX 960M? or shld I get the Acer i7 11th gen version

    • +3

10300H will sure be more powerful than 6700HQ, even though it's same type of CPU 4C/8T

3060 will run circles around 960M in terms of 3D performance

if your intended use is gaming, this is a solid upgrade. make sure to install another 8GB DDR4-3200 stick

  • +2

amazing HN is still selling it! must be lots of stock as opposed to Acer themselves or Bing Lee deal that was sold within minutes

is this the new Ozbargain standard issue gaming laptop of 2021? haha

  • Hmm so tempted to cancel my order with Lenovo.

Anyone want to comment on which is a better deal. This or what I got through Lenovo for $1,249:

    Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14ACH5
    - AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H
    - 16GB Soldered DDR4-3200
    - 512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe
    - 14" 2.8K (2880x1800) OLED 400nits Glossy, 90Hz, DCI-P3 100%, HDR 500 True Black, glass, Dolby Vision
    - Integrated Graphics

    • +2

depends on what's important to you. Lenovo has lots more processing power and better (although smaller) screen, but you won't be able to play 3D games on it, maybe much older ones only

Acer will do latest gaming without any issues, but has inferior display and slower CPU

so if you intend to, say, edit videos or photos only, keep Lenovo. for gaming, get Acer.

Lenovo has a stellar screen with full DCI-P3 coverage, which will cover you for a lot of pro video and photo applications (although in my opinion 14" laptops are a joke for either purposes, you need a 17 incher or an external monitor for that anyway)

otherwise, as a photographer, I chose Acer because when I game, I use built in 144Hz panel. when I edit photos, I connect my color accurate external monitor and all is well.

  • bought - walk in and grabbed one with 1 year product care

Can anyone recommend RAM and SSD

    Thanks!

      • Thanks, bought a stick for $45 with afterpay

I figure the existing stick of ram is already single-channel, adding this one should in theory achieve dual-channel even though they're different brands/models 🤞

        • Amazon review of the Crucial RAM: I was searching for ram which perfectly matches frequency and CL with the existing ram in my acer nitro 5 AN515-55-58EB. After a huge research I found that it is the one. It is perfectly working. If you have less budget you can consider 8gb variant of the same. I am writing the review for those guys who have same laptop as me so they don't have to waste their time like me. Picture is attached. Hope it helps.

I also got this RAM, works great, not sure how to test if it's working in dual channel though

        • Luck not required. It'll work.

    • Get dual rank ram. Linus has a video showing the difference between single and dual rank memory for laptops

  • Theres a few comments suggesting this is one of the worse Acer models but at a really good price.

If I was willing to spend a bit more what is a “good model” and what is the real world difference that makes it worth spending extra?

    • Nothing comes close for $1200.

However, if it was at the $1599RRP, I would get a Dell G15 with ryzen 7 or Intel 11th gen i7 with 16gb RAM, mux switch and 125w 3060 for around $1800 on sale.

Or the Lenovo on sale through eBay.

      • Thanks for the info, any insight into the real world difference/benifit between this and the other i5 Nitro 5 people say is better in the comments?

      • But don't forget the 3 SSD/NVME slots. I don't know if those others include those upgrade spots. The huge storage options on this thing are something else that is very rare at this price point.

  • Wonderful with AE card deal for travell credit. I am in

  • +1

    bought one in store.
Is there an easy way to remove bloatware?

    • Only Bloatware is Norton which you can uninstall via Control Panel.

Acer Care Centre and Acer NitroSense are pretty useful.

  • +2

Walked in and picked one up from Liverpool, they still had stock.

Apparantly sale is until end of this month

  • Bought this but haven't been able to use a second extremal monitor though a usb c - displayport cable. Does anyone know if usb c - hdmi would work?

    • +1

I gave USB-C to HDMI a try and no bueno. I don't think the USB-C port has any displayout capabilities, also tried USB-C to USB-C using a ThinkVision M14 portable monitor.

On the spec sheet it states the USB-C port only supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps, not Thunderbolt or display out over DisplayPort so makes sense.

      • Thanks for checking for me

  • Oh wow there are still a lot in stock in most of the stores as at now. I thought it would fly off the shelf pretty quickly. I should have bought a HN giftcard with SunSuper @ 7% discount, but was afraid that the stocks were depleted before the giftcard order is delivered.

by the way if anyone wants I can share my calibrated profiles using my ColorSpider

      for 6800K, 5800K and 5000K white points

6800K for daylight, 5800K for office lighting, 5000K for warm light or just a replacement for "blue light filter" function

the profile they posted on the Notebookcheck review is something in between 6800 and 5800, but I prefer to have separate ones

      https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jsq9scZ_tTpA0ADJ387J…

included my profiles and the Notebookcheck one (Nitro5_04)

they won't extend screen's colour space coverage, but will improve colour accuracy

  • can anyone please recommend SSD / SATA for this laptop??

    THXX

    • I have Samsung 980 and Kingston A2000 running in mine. both NVMe

    • Check out the Samsung range atm as they have Steam wallet giveaways pretty sure

    • Are you replace it or just add it in? will it has another socket to add SSD ?

  • Thanks, bought one :)

    I will upgrade the memory

Is everyone going to fully replace the ram with 2 new 3200 sodimms?

or just add 1 extra stick ?

    • the one that comes with the unit is fine. just get another DDR4-3200 stick (8 or 16GB) and you're good

search within the thread people reported which ones they bought (incl. me)

      • You mixed a 8gb and a 16gb?

Pretty sure dual channel won't work if the memory sticks aren't the same size.

effectively it's best to use same size, but mixing sizes also works.

HWInfo reports dual channel in my setup.

        • I have a 16GB 3200MHz stick and the original 8GB 3200MHz stick installed and they are running in dual channel.

When mixing RAM sizes, you only get the smallest stick's capacity running in dual channel on the larger stick, e.g. I doubt I will see dual channel performance if I use more than 16GB of RAM.

Was a serious question, thanks for ruining Christmas for me.

  • Hey guys
    I need some help.
I bought this laptop in Harvey Norman store today and paid 1198$. But they gave me the wrong model. The model I got is i7 rtx3050 one which is currently priced at 1398$. Should I return this one and get the one I intended to buy or should I just roll with it?
P.S. I'm planning to game and watch movies.

    • +3

      Return it

    • +4

If you're planning to game, I'd return it and get the RTX3060 model

      https://youtu.be/r2FkgeTZpzY

    • +2

      Return it.

The 3060 is a lot better than the 3050.

    • +2

For the record, I returned it and got the i5 RTX 3060 version

  • I'd roll with it, I also purchased the $1198 one, awaiting delivery.

  • This is still in stock? lol

  • So I’ve asked a few questions on here but had some mixed responses.

    Maybe to simplify my question:

If I was willing to spend around $1500 is there other laptops currently available (or regularly on sale) that are a better choice than this? If so, why, why not?

    • For $1200 this is good.. for $1500 you could probably find a laptop with the similar specs from another brand..

This is technically a $1500 laptop on sale.

  • Well hmmm, not sure i'm happy with the perf of the laptop, was getting 30fps in New World.

Maybe some tweaking is required, but i was at least hoping for 60fps.

I was in town though, oh and i didn't have the battery plugged in.

    • Do you install and extra 8 gb stick kf ram? Also try to always have your laptop plugged in when you game because it performs better and stop unnecessary battery degradation

      • +1

Ahh no, i forgot about that, i have a 8gb stick on the way :)

I tried again with battery plugged in, and was now getting nearly double the framerate.

        • Wow thats a massive difference. And yeah, dual channel ram will increase it by a nice amount too :)

          • @sTein0: Yeah the framerate is all over the place in New World, so it's a mixed bag

    • New World is also incredibly CPU limited, so don't expect miracles with the old i5 model in these laptop

  • I got the recommended RAM from Amazon yesterday https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-PC4-25600-SODIMM-260-Pin-M…

Is that suitable? Confused about the rank and specs …

Also yesterday it was being shipped from US - it's arriving 11 Nov - is the laptop very bad without the extra 8 gb? Wondering if I should find a local stock instead.
