Citi Rewards Card: 80,000 Velocity Points ($3,000 Spend in 90 Days, $99 Fee) + 70,000 Points for 2nd Year ($199 Fee) @ Citibank

250

Haven't seen this posted here yet. Looks like 80,000 bonus on signup, and another 70,000 after you pay the annual fee ($99 for the first year), so kinda similar to previous deals with the extra 70,000 after the first year.

Stated minimum income is $35,000 but would love to hear others' experiences with that.

    Signed up to this yesterday, approval came through this afternoon.
    My Velocity amex due for renewal end of October so was up for cancellation and usually churn one card a year.
    Given that you need to wait 18 months to go back to amex again to quality for any signup bonus points figured this was the perfect card of choice $99 first year and $199 second year for 150,000 points is great.
    Not 100% sure but there's a pretty good chance in the second year once the second lot of velocity points hit your account, you may be able to cancel and potentially get a pro-rata refund on the annual fee.
    Plan is after 18 months to switch back to amex when they have a other 100k-120k on offer.

    Now to wait for the card to arrive

      I got the card when it had 100k velocity points for $99 annual fee with 3k min spend…Citi recently changed the offer to the current one (80k + 70k)….very straight forward….I am not sure re the pro-rata refund though….I tried this but both Citi and ANZ said if I received bonus points in that year - they don't do pro-rata refund of annual fee….but AmEx did refund the annual fee in full….

    In citi sometime you talk to them and get some discount with annual fees as well. I was successful two times to get 50% off in fees. Worth to try if anyone close to pay annual fees.

    $90 for additional card holder for those who get a card for spouse etc

    Bit hard to churn if you had to keep the card active for a year..

      With the 70,000 in the second year I see it similar to churning to another card, only on this scenario your not changing card, getting the bonus points and not having to make any minimum spend for it.
      So $298 for 150,000 velocity is a pretty good deal in my eyes.
      Also once your points hit your account in the second year, nothing stopping to from cancelling and churning to a different card, which is likely what I will be doing if there is another good bonus points offer.

    • Correct, especially if you want to maximise on Citibank's lack of 12-months between accounts (this also applies Virgin Velocity CCs, who are underwritten by Citibank).

  • Noob question… are the velocity points useful nowadays?
    I had few hundreds pre-covid, which I could redeem at Etihad and I do believe you could also transfer to Krisflyer).
    Now al those options are gone… and I am struggling to see the value in the points any more :-(

      Ostensibly, overseas redemptions will be coming back soon.

      Will be interesting to see how redemptions with Air Canada work and what the pricing for those will be, given they're partners now.

    • Can use these to fund domestic trips. Go to QLD once a year to avoid some winter etc..

  • It seems like a solid deal, that's nearly 100,000 Krisflyer pts.

    It's only 1 credit check, never had Citibank CC before.

    Solid deal in my opinion.

    • No guarantee that you can move Velocity pts to Krisflyer anymore. Lets hope it comes back though….

      • I always presumed that being able to do that was because Singapore owned a portion of Virgin, which they don't anymore.

        I guess time will tell.

        • I didn't realise you couldn't transfer anymore? Can you transfer them somewhere else?

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: No. It was one of the very few Rewards systems that let you transfer to another system, and now Singapore no longer are part owners it's never coming back. But you can still use Velocity points on partner airlines directly.

            • @madreece: No you can't. International redemptions are not available atm. AFAIK, this includes domestic redemptions on international partners too, eg within the US on Delta.

              • @Some Guy: Yeah, you're right. It's atm but will hopefully be changing soon. It was more of a comment on the transfer to SA.

                • @madreece: Yeah we're all waiting with bated breath. I'm gonna be devo'd if Singas and Delta doesn't come back. Will probably jump to QF if not. Not that its all peachy over there.

                    @Some Guy: I've jumped already. Got three of us booked into Europe in business with my last Velocity points transfer. Now doing the One World points thing. Damn you Amex for the devaluation.

                    • @madreece: Yeah that was crotch kick. This is still a decent offer though to use the points for domestic redemptions here whilst still getting a bit of use from VA status. Then it's over to QF, mainly for EK redemptions.

                      @madreece: I got about 400k Krisflyer, I was going to transfer my latest AMEX pts instead of a gift card.

                      I am concerned about the pts expiring, hoping Singapore give a decent extension as it may be difficult to find seats. I'm hoping to fly First Class, but at the moment really don't have a date in mind.

                      Plus I got friends all over Europe, it's not sunshine & flowers. I'm not sure I wanna travel when it'll be hit & miss, but maybe by next year it'll be fine.

                      Imagine traveling, then a new strain comes and you have to quarantine and pay for 3 people 😬😬😬

                      • @[Deactivated]: The quarantine thing is the big consideration indeed. When we go we will be just hanging with our French family, so the travel and any restriction though out Europe won't really be too big of a concern for us.
                        I can't see borders being closed once they have been opened, there will be anarchy, but caps on returning is a consideration. But for us, no big stress if we had to stay over there for an extended time.

                  • @Some Guy: Since starting in the role last month, I have been working closely with Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka and the Velocity management team, to re-open our partnerships with a number of leading international airlines, starting with:

                    · Virgin Atlantic;
                    · Air Canada;
                    · Delta Air Lines;
                    · Etihad Airways;
                    · Hawaiian Airlines;
                    · Singapore Airlines; and
                    · South African Airways.

                    I’m thrilled to have these wonderful airlines continue in the Velocity program, providing you an enviable international network of flights to hundreds of destinations around the world.

                    From 11:59pm AEDT next Monday 1 November 2021, you’ll be able to make Reward Seat bookings using your Velocity Points for flights on Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and South African Airways.

    I can't find anything in the T's and C's about eligibility restrictions for previous Citi bank CC holders. I had a Citi card that was closed ~5 months; anyone have any insight around if there's a waiting period before being able to apply again and get the Velocity points?

    • +1

      yes, they told me that my previous credit application has be at least 9 months old

      I recently took out two citibank premier cards within 4 months of each other and achieved the bonus spend on both occasions with points the following month
