International Travel is scheduled to start in November 2021

    Wishful thinking.

    • +1

      Guess you missed the news…

      • Peps will straight up jack planes if they don't get their way.

  • Aloha Sydney , Aloha Hawaii :)

  • +5

FYI - US won't accept AZ vaccinations..

"This means two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of Johnson and Johnson plus 15 days after the last dose."

    • +21

According to Dr Fauci they are, likely, to change that very shortly; given how much AZ has been done by Europe and the UK.

      • +3

        And Canada…

      • And how arbitrary the whole approach to vaccines has been…

    • they seemingly do now

    • -4

Or from any other place in the world.

    • +1

      Just uninstall it then

  • +39

The Prime Minister for Sydney has entered the chat.

    • +23

I wish he would leave the chat and board the flight already.

      • +7

I wish he would leave the chat and board the flight already indefinitely.

        Fixed.

    • +1

Has he Brodened this deal ?

      • No, he only needs a one way ticket.

    • -4

Sydney does not have a Prime Minister. You mean the Prime Minister of Australia?

      • +7

        If only he represented Australia.

Vaccine statistics from the Federal Governments own websites

        Vaccines done by State Hubs
        NSW - 3,643,623
        Victoria - 3,655,730

        Vaccines done by the Commonwealth
        NSW 6,795,836
        Victoria 3,996,807

        https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2021…

Have a look at the other Statistics as well. They are, very, illuminating.

It is also interesting to look at the timing of when, and how, payments have been turned on and off.

        • If only he represented Australia.

          He does.

Vaccine statistics from the Federal Governments own websites

Correlation does not equal causation. Disparity does not equal discrimination.

          • +2

            @1st-Amendment: He is biased.

The statistics here are beyond “error levels”. Give me your explanation. I will go get my popcorn.

Even today the Commonwealth vaccination level is almost double for NSW.

  • +2

Might get given the 3rd booster shot and Lei on arrival.

    • +1

Been a lonely lockdown for you too, hey?

  • +11

Make sure to look at accommodation prices before you book any flights - looks to be around $2,000 minimum for a week in Waikiki.

    • +2

      Reasonable.

    • -1

funnelling the cost from the airlines to the tourism market at the destination, seems like a win to me.

  • +24

Cheap flights to Hawaii are not the bargain they appear to be on the surface for most people.

Hawaii has some of the most expensive accommodation out of all the beach holiday destinations.

This means while you can save a couple of hundred on flights the savings are dwarfed by extra accommodation costs which are generally $100s a night more than other destinations like Fiji, Bali, Thailand etc.

    • +13

International (or indeed interstate) travel is also surprisingly expensive. Tents pitched in your backyard avoid these costs. For those looking to retain that getaway feeling, friends couches are also more often than not free, and within close distances, meaning you can drive or be given a lift for maximum savings.

      • +3

Right, but $450 flights to Bali mean you can have a week away for a couple for $1500-$2000. $450 flights to Hawaii will mean its a $2500+ holiday.

        • +17

Just making a slightly cheeky point, mate. Hawaii is a preeeeetty different experience to Bali, and that different experience is what you're paying for. Personally I'd go to Fiji most years due to the young family, but would absolutely splash out occasionally for Hawaii to change things up. Hawaii's awesome

          • +3

@Coltrainz: agree you can't really compare Hawaii to Bali.

            • @TheBean:

agree you can't really compare Hawaii to Bali.

Of course you can, he just did

        • +11

You get what you pay for. Would much rather a $2,500+ holiday to Hawaii than any price trip to Bali. Each to there own though.

          • +1

@cnrmlj: Interesting… I said I'd never go to Bali, but loved it and ended up going back (Seminyak and Jimbaran). Never been to Kuta, but the bogans who smuggled the mini booze bottles on to the flight seem to be heading that way.

I didn't like Hawaii, but in fairness have only spent nights in Wakikii and Maui (over developed, over priced). So sad to see massive resorts on what would have been an amazing place once.

            • +2

              @tunzafun001:

but in fairness have only spent nights in Wakikii and Maui

You picked the two worst places in Hawaii.

            • @tunzafun001: Agree - and the accomodation in Bali is mostly fantastic whereas you pay $500 a night for an old dump in Hawaii.

              • @LXE3: Thailand is similar. For the money you get super luxurious and spectacular resort accommodation. In Hawaii we had a view onto a construction site and paid more for the honour!

On the flipside, I never had locals in Hawaii warn me away from walking down a street because I would've been beaten and mugged, or worried that our tour bus was going to be stopped because a marauding tribe was on the verge of staging a coup. Swings and roundabouts …and don't get me started on the roundabouts in Thailand!

btw… loved Thailand. The food is amazing and it's absolutely beautiful

                • @Coltrainz: Sadly, I can’t go to Thailand again. Last time I went I got Dengue Fever and ended up in intensive care for a week. I’ve been warned that if I get it again it may well be fatal. Probably applies to Bali and a host of other places too 😩

                  • @LXE3: That would be pretty scary.

Just out of interest did you have insurance? Do you know what the costs were?

    • +6

This is a silly comparison to make.

Bali, Thailand and Fiji have weak currencies while Hawaii has the US dollar and is a state of the western united states.

In comparison, Thailand, Bali and Fiji are a rip off compared to Cambodia.

      • +3

Except that who flys on Jetstar sale fares (purchased a year in advance) while dropping the kind of coin you need to have a good time in Hawaii? If you can afford Hawaii you can afford normal priced flights on an airline that gives you food and baggage…

        • +2

You have a valid point, but an ozbargainer also saves money where its not important, many people don't care about the flight quality as long as its safe.

        • That's a bit of a silly generalisation. Many people would be happy to fly on Jetstar (who are perfectly fine for long haul flights) for cheaper, it means they can spend more money on accommodation.

      • True about Cambodia being cheap but it has very poor infrastructure and it still very dodgy (did somebody say landmines…?) and the government is super corrupt.

        • +1

Yes but thats how it works, the cheaper it is, the more its like that.

    • +8

Stirlo is right to point this out - as an ex travel agent, most people who book these cheap fares for the first time expect accommodation to be comparable to other beach destinations, and get a very rude shock when they find out they're going to have to pay London/New York prices…

      • +2

It's a bit more expensive than London, a serviced apartment / hotel around Kensington / Notting Hill was ~$200 AUD a night when I went in '18. Waikiki was around $300 per night for something similar, which was ~ same as what I paid in Netherlands.

Doesn't top the list though, most expensive is still ski in / ski out hotels in Jindabyne and Hokkaido…

        • Australian hotels are overpriced wherever you go. Go 300km inland from Sydney and a hotel built in the 70's, poorly run and possibly full of smelly miners or roadworkers is $170 a night. Vacationing in Australia is an absolute rip-off. I've had 5-star hotels in Bangkok for $70!

      • Is it really that different to any of Australia's Islands? Probably not.

Hawaii is just further away then our islands.

    • +9

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that a tropical island state in the USA has higher costs than developing countries in Asia.

      • +6

To be fair most don't expect it to be AS cheap as Bali or Thailand, but are expecting more like Gold Coast prices where a 3* - 4* apartment with a half decent view goes for about $1500/week, whereas Hawaii was costing closer to $3500 for something similar (at the time I was working anyway, haven't checked for a few years).

Many parts of the US have pretty reasonable accommodation prices, as do many beach destinations, so imo it's not unusual for someone who hasn't researched Hawaii specifically to be expecting accommodation prices to be at least half of what they are in reality.

        • +1

          100% this.

Particularly those impulse buying Jetstar sale fares. For most destinations Jetstar flys to the airfare makes up a large part of the holiday cost. That is not the case for Hawaii.

        • Why would you expect gold coast prices on an actual island? Island prices are always more expensive compared to mainland, its just the mainland of Thailand etc is insanely cheap due to various reasons including currency.

You would be better off comparing it to Australia's islands, which are insanely expensive.

          • @samfisher5986:

You would be better off comparing it to Australia's islands, which are insanely expensive.

            Tasmania is pretty cheap XD

          • @samfisher5986: Yes Bangkok is insanely cheap for accommodation as there is ample supply at all price/quality points and lots of competition. But its not to everyone's taste as its pretty frenetic and can get hot with all that concrete and traffic. Id move there tomorrow if i could!

In Hawaii's defence it is one of the cheapest places i have ever been to rent a car (O'ahu) via the carsharing app Turo. USD$40 per day with unlimited km's. Makes sense as there isnt really many places you can go once you've done a lap of the island.

            • @afah0447: Sorry but Bangkok accommodation is not cheap because of ample supply…

              • @samfisher5986: Look beyond the Sukhumvit tourist area.

                • @afah0447: That still doesn't change the reason.

I think you fail to understand how a countries economy and currency work.

      • +3

For sure and if anyone just books flights to a random destination without doing that sort of normal travel research, then they only have themselves to blame if they are surprised.

        • +1

Except that its easy to do this for many other destinations Jetstar flys to. Hawaii is the exception.

    • +2

Yes Hawaii is really expensive but definitely one of my favourite travel destinations (have been twice). Some of the most stunning landscapes I've ever seen and a million different things to do. I have only been to Maui and Oahu so far and would love to visit some of the other islands.

      • Was never a nature admirer, but after hawaii trip I was never the same person. Nature at its best.

        • +1

We got to snorkel with sea turtles. They were at a rock just off the beach and people swimming around didn’t seem to bother them. Just amazing.

    • As others have said they are different experiences. I went with my family and had a great time. Something that might be worth looking at air bnb, or equivalents.

      • +1

Not saying it's not worth it.

Just that it's a different price bracket to other destinations Jetstar flys where often the flights can make up a large proportion of the holiday cost while accommodation is dirt cheap.

Saving $200 on flights to Hawaii while spending $2000 extra on accommodation is something ozbargainers should think about before booking.

        • +1

It depends on how long you want to go for. If you are going for a week, and use Airbnb, you can get some accomodation for under $1,000. Frankly, my favourite exotic getaway is Mauritius. I spent three lovely weeks there whilst the man was working.

    • +1

      Hawaii vs Indonesia LULZ

    • But i love Hawai'i, not fussed for the other places.

  • I was expecting far more jokes about that holiday to Hawaii

  • +1

These fares do not include checked luggage or in-flight food.

Hope the cabin luggage allowance is still 10 kgs per seat

  • +3

Nature is healing - there are international flight deals on OzBargain again!

  • +5

    This deal good for scomo.

  • +4

Yeah but the return leaves at 8AM

So you need to be up at 4.30AM with your children, to get to the airport. Hotels are stupidly expensive there so you are effectively wasting the last night to leave at 'sparrows.

Then attempt to sleep on truly revolting seats as your children thank you for a great holiday.

We'll go to Asia next time.

    • Go to Fiji, child care is basically free for travellers.

    • it is what it is, if people are complaining with the early flight back to sydney then pay extra and fly Hawaiian airlines

  • Is this fully refundable? Just in case.

  • +3

Save your money, I'm sure there will be $0 return flights promo somewhere from now till then

    • Yeh these flights were often around 350 pre-covid

  • crapstar … just don't do it everyone

  • +2

100% recommend checking accomodation prices before booking. We’ve booked on qantas using points, but accomodation at some places is much more expensive than pre-Covid. Some operators have used the downturn to re-invest, improve the experience and the price. Example - check out turtle bay on north shore Oahu. It’s now ~$1,300/night in June 2022. Previously was ~$800.

    • do you mean operators are using this downturn to increase prices so they can recoup some $$ from the loss of income?
whilst they didn't have international tourists coming in they still had people from mainland go into hawaii, they didn't lock it all down

  • Not sure if only me but anyone else not caring about finding cheap flights? tbh, given that we have been unable to fly last year, and the lockdowns, Im happy to pay up for a better experience/airline.

    • It's on a Dreamliner. You can shell out extra for business class.

  • Been to Hawaii several times pre-covid and accomodation has always been ludicrously expensive. Short term holiday rentals aren’t as readily available as they were 3-5 years ago due to law changes so keep that in mind also.

    • unfortunately its going to take some time before prices go lower or back to the way they were pre-covid.

i've been to hawaii lots of times, done waikiki and the 4 islands and for me i would rather stick away from the expensive hotels and try airbnb.
it'll save on some costs on that part unless you need that hotel experience.

and yes there is airbnb in waikiki, just read reviews to see which one you like and you won't be that far from the beach. that was our original plan last year until covid struck then we couldn't go to hawaii :(

  • My partner is Hawaiian. Looking forward to this trip.

  • Thanks
I booked a ticket from 5th of september to 26th of september.
Accomodation for 3 weeks at honolulu sets back around $5500.

  • What happens if you get sick or Covid there? How does travel insurance deal with Covid related sickness? US health is very expensive.

    • Hopefully with vaccination and local exposure for 12months we should be OK.

    • +4

All travel insurance companies now exclude coverage for Covid. An overnight hospital stay in USA costs $10k USD on average.

So if you're concerned, it may be prudent to travel to countries which have a reciprocal health agreement with Australia:

      Belgium
      Finland
      Italy
      Malta
      the Netherlands
      New Zealand
      Norway
      the Republic of Ireland
      Slovenia
      Sweden
      the United Kingdom.

    • What happens if you get sick or Covid there?

For 99% of people, Covid is still nothing worse than a cold. If you are vaccinated it's even better than that. But travel has always been about adventure over fear. It's up to you which force you will submit to.

      • +2

If you get sick, in America, travel could be about bankruptcy. There is a difference between fear and foolhardy. I’ve travelled a bit, in America, and I always get top travel health insurance.

  • -2

If you get sick, in America, travel could be about bankruptcy.

    So fear then.
