China Southern is a 4-star airline and hubs through Guangzhou, China to a ton of Asian destinations, including Japan.

These are the best dates I've found, but if the dates you want aren't there, try them anyway as I can't search every single combination!

Also compare with Air Asia to Osaka from $269 one way, Tokyo from $205 and Seoul from $259.

Summary:
Melbourne to Tokyo (20 Feb - 31 Jul) from $636 return
Sydney to Tokyo (20 Feb - 31 Jul) from $679 return
Brisbane to Tokyo (20 Feb - 31 Jul)) from $706 return
Sydney to Osaka (20 Feb - 31 Jul) from $706 return
Melbourne to Osaka (20 Feb - 31 Jul) from $681 return
Brisbane to Osaka (20 Feb - 31 Jul) from $709 return

Also compare with Singapore Airlines from all key Aus ports to Tokyo, Osaka or Fukuoka although these were a while back, so some prices may have changed on certain dates/routes.

The cherry blossom or sakura is never perfectly predictable, but some early predictions are below:

This entire cherry blossom thing in Japan is the most overrated experience on the planet? Just go to any suburb in Melbourne during late spring and you will see a million blossoms for free. And you dont need to camp outside.

I personally am not a fan of going to Japan but it seems like everyone else is going there. My wife is very likely influenced by social media and keeps asking me to take her there so i agree its very likely a hype created but i guess they know how to get you.

On a different note, china southern has both times cancelled my flight, once by me going to Sydney airport three times, especially when I was travelling to get married and flight was 4 days prior to my wedding. On a positive note, they allow 46kg checked baggage and both times, they put me on a different airline without changing baggage allowance so I was not complaining. I also found out that those people who didn't take the overnight hotel option got $300 back due to flight cancellation so it doesn't sound a terrible option but I would suggest travel insurance either through credit card or separately.

        Japan is the new Bali

Just came back from Japan and loved it. Sure, there are the turoist traps, but do your research and plan well, and you'll be fine. Lots of Aussies everywhere, though, easily identifiable through their Kathmandu's lol.

          • @HamBoi69: How long did you stay for? & how long would you recommend?

            • +1

@Cludo: Left on 4th from Mel thru Singapore to NRT arriving on the 5th and the same on the way back retuning on the 16th and arriving back yesterday. So about 12 days in Japan really.

Look it’s left me wanting more, but then again any international travel does. My days were packed with lots on, take USJ for example (and I consider that a quieter day!), did everything I wanted to on the days so I’d say it was a perfect amount of time. Happy to PM you if want more detail on anything, I had a great time.

              • @HamBoi69: Thanks for the reply! - we're looking at 12 days total
My partner has planned a whole bunch of stuff to do she was originally going with some of her friends but some have dropped out and I'm thinking about last minute joining them 😊

@Cludo: 1 week in each place is good if you can do it - tokyo, kyoto, osaka etc

              • @31mop: I just did a Tokyo to Fukuoka trip about a month ago. For those that want to save money, note that Tokyo, Nagoya and the Kansai area (and Kyoto especially) are ruinously expensive on friday and Saturday nights. So I like to take the slow trains and visit smaller towns on the Tokaido and San'yo line. Outside of the big holidays prices on weekends are cheapest one day ahead as hotels scramble to fill unsold inventory, so let google maps tell you where you're getting off the train the next day and save 20-30% over booking ahead.

The Kintetsu rail pass is extremely good value getting from Nagoya to Osaka/Kyoto while visiting Ise Shima, Iga, or Nara, all of which are super cheap on the weekend. The two day nonconsecutive Nankai railpass is extremely good value if you want to visit Koyasan (you absolutely do) and later go to the airport or vice-versa.

The JR Seishun Jūhachi Kippu was destroyed last october and is now consecutive rather than five days in a month, and therefore useless.

    • there's worse, like the nyc nye ball drop where you can't go to the toilet for 12 hours

    • +1

This is actually kinda true. Theres an industrial road in Melbourne that is lined with cherry blossoms, looks straight out amazing once they bloom lol

China southern is a full service carrier.

They may provide free Guangzhou (CAN) transit accommodation based on your cabin level.

  • Disney Land is good there.

  • +2

Can I stop over Guangzhou for few days before or after Japan? Will it be more expensive then these prices?

    • I like to know this as well

    • If you're keen on stopping over in GZ, I'd trial out some sample dates to see. I've done this a few times before and have found prices to be roughly the same/marginally more expensive.

    • It will be more expensive because the only way of longer lay over is to split your ticket

  • +1

Beware they sold from a third party called lucky2go. They are near scam going by reviews. You should be lucy2 have a ticket.

    • +2

      as per the company name

    • Oh did not realise that

  • I've had issues with China Southern transfer, for some reason the seats don't get preserved for the second leg.

    doesn't help that I couldn't find a way to online check-in either.

  • -2

One of the worst flight. Frequent cancellation can ruin your plan.

  • Good comfy flight, used them for Mel-Tokyo last year. My only issue was you can't online check-in or reserve seats.

Also have to stand in hour long queue for checking in at the airports.

    • You should be able to do check in from their website or WeChat mini program.

      • Nope, doesn't work unless you have a local Chinese mobile number.

        • +1

You can absolutely book seats if you use China Southern's website, I flew with them last month and did this. You can book a multi stop ticket for free if you want a stopover at Guangzhou to visit the Greater Bay area or Hong Kong. I also did this last month.

If you use a third party booking site, no you can't choose. Book direct.

  • Thanks buddy i am just planning a trip to Tokyo and this can save me $$$!!!
