    2.1a total @ 5v USB is a horrendous limitation

    • +3

It's probably fine if you just want to charge a single device overnight?

    • +1

It's terrible. If you are going to pay a sparky to install these then at least spend a little more on one's with good power output.

    • +1

The like of these have been around for years and I have ignored as the are just a gimmick.

One day someone will bring out one with a decent USB output and I will bite.

    • +1

For charging overnight, you don't need the faster speeds so why would it matter?

    • Its enough to power a wireless security camera or power pretty much anything usb. If i want to charge my phone fast ill use the proper charger. I need to have its special cable on me anyway. I wonder how long before a new even faster charging standard comes out to add to the various fast charging standards out already, all the while usba [email protected] will stay around for ages because its the standard for actually powering things.

  • +1

Imagine installing an outdated usb standard into your wall sockets. Would be hassle when you upgrade to USB C..!

    • Agreed! I had a couple of USB C sockets installed in my house a few years ago. Not sure how much longer people are going to need old USB for.

      • +5

You're in for a shock if you think USB-A is going anywhere anytime soon.

        • -4

They're already on their way out from phones. Macs have completely removed them.
The only thing left is dodgy cheap crap as far as using them for power goes.

          • +1

@ldt: Oh of course, because phones and Macs are the only devices with USB ports. My bad, go on.

            • -2

@Tacooo: Do re-read my post above if that's what you think I've said.

              • @ldt: I did re-read your post. Several times.

The only thing left is dodgy cheap crap as far as using them for power goes.

What a load of uneducated shit. Do you know how many devices still release with USB-B Micro because it's cheap and still very prolific? USB-C isn't going to suddenly be in everything because the connectors cost money and any iterations of existing hardware with a new connector will have to be redesigned.

                • -1

@Tacooo: You even used the word "cheap" yourself. Think that's that solved.
If you're going to sling insults at me, there isn't any point having a conversation about it.

                  • +1

@ldt: Cheap connector =/= cheap devices.
If you can't understand that there isn't any point having a conversation about it.

Could you also please point out where I threw an insult?

                    • -1

@Tacooo: If you can't see it it's not worth talking about.
                      Enjoy your day.

          • @ldt: Can still buy USB-A to lightning and USB-A to USB-C cables, so not an issue there. The issue is 5V only and low amps at that. If it had QC, etc. then would actually be useful even if Type-A ports.

  • +1

Cheap enough… But have to agree with above. 2.1A TOTAL is not worth the effort changing my outlets.

  • +4

i will say, one good thing about the look of this powerpoint, is that its spaced out sufficiently. There's plugs, like on the google homes, that are massive

  • I'd imagine the QC or USB PD you want on these things would bump the price up considerably. $14 is a pretty low price for an outlet with USB sockets. I agree that nobody in their right mind would do a replacement of their house's power points for these, but maybe someone who was going to renovate anyway might. The low power draw could be useful for other things like diffusers, baby monitors, other cheap junk, etc.

  • you may want to read some of the amazon reviews if you are looking to replace an existing switch

  • +1

Is the USB socket suitable for connection to an old amazon echo dot 1st/2nd gen?

  • Reviews aren't great… hard to retrofit due to size.
