A proper noun is a specific (i.e., not generic) name for a particular person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are always capitalized in English, no matter where they fall in a sentence. Because they endow nouns with a specific name, they are also sometimes called proper names.

Got a udemy link for a 'Complete English Course' ;)

      • And that medium would be?

Fixed "You are totally brainwashed by American controlled media"

Negged to downvote to (then) 0 and for being sucked in by trolling HKS who was jocular IMO. While typing I see 2 anonaneggers have struck.

Must have been brainwashed myself as first thing I wondered is what the heck does Mainland China flag have to do with a language course?

        • UK / USofA / etc flag will be used for "English". Taiwan/RoC flag used traditional Han, this course is simplify Han (China/PRC) hance the flag is correctly used.
          Self confessions "Hollywood brainwashed"

          • @a1234my: May "fit" for the (simple Chinese) language but still seems pushy and awkward to my brainwashed self

Xi!!! is that you ? Seems like you just made profile today to comment on this forum?

@Ryanek: The CCP has a 1000 year plan, so in that context 8 years is nothing…

          • +1

@Ryanek: Actually I'm not agreeing or disagreeing but China is a long term oriented country according to Hofstede's cultural dimensions. What do you know, I learnt a thing or two at uni after all .

            https://www.hofstede-insights.com/

Its very interesting, just thought I'd through it in haha.

Is this deal approved by the CCP?

    • Not necessary but teaching other languages in china probably required

    • +1

Perhaps the contents needed CCP approvals. You know what they will teach!

    • -3

It is, notice if you comment against the CCP you get heavily down voted.

One course has 0 ratings and the other 46 ratings with a score of 3.9. Learning a language takes a lot of time. Pay for a course with a high score (and number of ratings) - it will save you time=money.

  • +14

I started learning with duolingo over a year and a half ago, about 30 minutes a day. Just so everyone knows it takes about 4 years with 2 hours a day of study to become fluent, it’s one of the toughest languages to learn.

      • +19

        Technology translates words not culture

        • -7

          技术有语言转换工具,所以你只是在浪费时间

          • -1

@popsiee: Is this morse code for aussie scum or something? Also why thumbnail has friendly chinese girl and not chairman mao?

          • @popsiee: Have to say this translation doesn't make much sense, for saying all the nonsense, you're just finding excuses for your laziness.

      • Technology yet to properly handle this sort of language.

    • -3

Might be tough if it's your second language, but not on it's own, 1.5 billion people somehow mastered it so it's not as tough as you think.

      • Have they all learnt Mandarin? Some refusing and keeping to their own language, like Cantonese?

        • Do you think that learning Cantonese would be any different in terms of toughness?

          • @[Deactivated]: No clue, just doubt 1.5 billion speak Mandarin. Regardless the vast majority of people on the planet speak a language, seems we are capable of learning languages, multiple different languages even.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Cantonese is a lot more difficult to learn than Mandarin

      • +2

The toughness always comes when it's not your first language. I am not aware of any language that is too tough to be learned as first language lol.

      • I've been to rural Southern China. While they all learn Mandarin in school, they are far from masters!

    • +2

Gonna go out on a limb here and say you won't be fluent if all you do is use an app. Gonna need some conversation thrown in there

    • +7

Forcing and compulsory have different meanings.

      • +1

Many Chinese students hate to learn English but they have to.

        • +12

lol most students love playing and don’t like to go to school at all. They are “forced” to go.

        • You are wrong. They dont have to. If they done turn up to the engrish class noone going shoot them in the head with a gun, its not north korea.

          • -1

@Chchnu: What do they teach in an engrish class?

            • @Twocents: Nothing, but they try to teach english.

        • +4

When I was a student, I also hate Math, Physics or everything they teach at school, some of which are compulsory everywhere. O guess there's no human rights on earth

          • @derekek: Sure, you are living in the world of freedom you can choose whatever you want. You can choose not to learn them. But Chinese students they cannot.

    • +24

Having compulsory subjects in school is not the same as "breaching human rights".

      • Just imagine the other way around.

        • +3

It was compulsary to learn English, Maths, Science, Arts, gym, and French at my school. Oh the humanity!

      • +2

Try make Chinese be compulsory in Australia you will see how western politicians blame it with human rights and all other composed lies

        • +4

French was compulsary at my school. Should I have written to my local politican?

          • +2

@FabMan: A second language is compulsory, it is up to the school to offer which language. Unfortunately some of these "french" teachers clearly didn't like teaching french all that much.

        • Try make Chinese be compulsory in Australia you will see how western politicians blame it with human rights and all other composed lies

Well forcing someone to learn another language is a breach of human rights…

      • +1

"breaching human rights" is just 2021 equivalent to stomping and pouting.

    • +10

Their version of "human rights" is different with other countries anyway.

      • -4

Try make Chinese be compulsory in Australia you will see how western politicians blame it with human rights and all other composed lies

    • +7

In Japan & Taiwan English is a compulsory subject in school so you better shoot at those (pro western) gov't too. "Go away with politics" indeed.

      • -1

Lol. English is the quasi universal language, so it makes sense, similar to $USD in the currency sphere. Aus schools provide other languages as a choice, not forced, which is great. Chinese people don’t have favourable views of Japan and Taiwan, so that comment makes sense.

      • -4

Try make Chinese be compulsory in Australia you will see how western politicians blame it with human rights and all other composed lies

        • +1

That was what the CCP were attempting with the Confucius Classroom program in NSW.

          • +2

@cheaponos: That is what west is doing to Chinese classroom in China

          • @cheaponos: Remember trump' s family were showing off their learning Chinese? It's normal Australia to follow coz Australia follow whatever USA do

            • +3

@newonelei: You really need to get some new material.

English is the defacto global language, that's why it's being taught to Chinese students. To give them an advantage. If they really don't want to learn it, I imagine they can quite easily fail the subject. But to have it in their syllabus does not make it a breach of their human rights.

And in any case, if you were going to worry about human rights breaches in China, the last place you'd start is with the syllabus that mandates English lessons.

              • +2

@kale chips suck: He can't get new material. He needs to wait for someone invented something new so he can copy.
                Oops. Sounds familiar?

        • +1

It’s CCP that is “making” the Chinese student to learn English. You got an issue with that, take it up with emperor Xi and his goons

    • -1

Then why China’s national flag appears in the cover?
