Here is the comparison for those wondering.

The main differences are chip, WiFi 6, new remote (remote app is built-in in iPhone), high frame rate Dolby Vision/HDR, HDMI 2.1, and Thread.

        and new A12 chip

        • +5

That's the first thing mentioned in the list.

            @Pricebeat: Jayboi craves specifics.

according to what I’ve read, if you don’t have an iphone go for gen 2, the remote is much more useful than gen 1

And ARC for the dozens of us with HomePods.

Alternatively you can purchase just the remote itself for $79. I’ve used both generation and couldn’t notice any difference in terms of performance and speed, it’s safe the say the upgrade is minimal, if not negligible. So this post by OP is a good deal.

curious to know why someone would pay for this, when a google chromecast is nearly half the price of this?

    • For me, I don't think I can run zwift on a Chromecast

  • A lot of people are buying the new Apple TV for the remote, you could just buy the remote and this unit and may come out not that much behind.

  • Only reason i was going to get one was for my free Apple TV subscription but now that Smart TVs and also finally nvidia shield has got the AppleTV app, probably not much point getting this for me. Sadly the AppleTV app for Shield came out a day after i decided to buy a second Xbox and use one in my bedroom alongside the Shield for AppleTV. I hear some of the FTA apps on the Apple TV are good compared to the alternatives, better support etc if people were using those apps. I dont really use the FTA apps at all except for the occasional SBS on demand.

    • I have 4 different apple IDs setup in US, UK, India and Australia. I use those to download apps from those countries and have DNS setup to be able to access the content. This would not have worked for me via my TV OS. Also being able to control it with my iPhone and share audio on airpods is a plus for me. I also occasionally use it for gaming

      • I presume you can do similar things on Android TV/ Shield for that as well? How do you find gaming on the AppleTV? Is it gaming like the same games that are on ipad / iphone or is it like a different selection of games? I have had a few Shield TVs for years but have never tried gaming on them (via the actual games) but I have tried doing the gaming streaming from my gaming pc to the Shield TV in my bedroom and that worked quite well.

Do you know if they have fixed the HD Audio codec (lossless audio) support on the new Apple TV, That was the biggest surprise and reason i never got one in the past. It doesnt passthrough Lossless audio but rather converts back into PCM.

Also why is there so much talk about the remote difference? Is there an issue with the older remotes?

Maybe, I tried it on my google tv but I had to switch on VPN to see apps from another country. whereas with Apple TV just signing in with Apple ID from that country was sufficient and quite easy to switch between accounts from the control center.

I play similar games that I have on my iPhone. Such as Rayman Adventures. Only some gaming apps offer apple TV app. Apple arcade is also available on Apple TV with paid membership. but I haven't tried it yet. For gaming, you can connect a wireless controller like dual sense and it works pretty well.

Here is a list of "best" games available on apple tv.

I only have the 2017 model and haven't had much experience with it.

The new remote has buttons as well as a trackpad (called 5-way clickpad). The old one only had a trackpad. Also, the newer one is Bluetooth 5.0 and made of aluminum instead of a glass front on the old one and a power button is added to the remote. Newer one however got rid of accelerometer or gyroscope

@Pricebeat: Thanks mate for all the useful information. Much appreciated.

            • @lonewolf: Just came back for further review. May be it’s just me but, I was just using Google TV and it feels so slow navigating around it. Difference feels like using iPhone 3 (Google TV) vs iPhone 12 (Apple TV)

  • All browsers and no buyer. Only 1 bought.

I've got the original apple tv. Most of the apps are obsolete and don't work anymore. No updates for them. I can still cast from my iPad to the box. I was using it for the NBA app. But it doesn't work anymore. I loved it but hesitate to buy another one as I reckon they will do the same again to make you buy a new box

I was going to say this is probably going to happen….

      • +1

First one was released in 2007, if that's what they mean by original. what would you expect after 14 years?

        • I understand, it's also likely to happen to this device if it's already 5yrs old. As with iPhone I assume once OS updates stop then eventually the minimum requirement of the app will make it unusable on older device… So it's up to the buyer but something to consider.
