  • would this be an upgrade to my acer 17x with gtx1080?

    • Considering that this laptop only has a 1080p display and the rtx 2070 no super is last gen midrange card it's more of side grade than an upgrade

It does have RTX features though so you will be able to switch on Ray tracing and Dlss, at least in the dozens of games that support it.

      • thanx, i will pass on this one

      • 1080p on a 17" laptop is sharper than 1440p on a 27". There is nothing wrong with 1080p on a 17" (or smaller) screen

  • +10

    G7 7790 owner here

terrible thermal performance, stupid alienware Command Center, horrible keyboard

    worst laptop ever used

    • wow what a disappointment

Have you tried undervolting and buying a cooler pad

    • G7 7790 user here. Actually I'm happy with it, but you need to do something to make it "cooler" when running games. You could refer to this post:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/513777

The keyboard is not good. I use the logitech mouse and keyboard.

    • Agreed.

My favourite thing about the G7 is when you close the screen and all of a sudden the fans run flat out for the next minute or so. No games played or anything else beforehand that is CPU-intensive. Tried everything from a clean install to mucking around with drivers and settings, no difference.

And yeah that Alienware Command Centre, sheeezzz…

Other than that, it's pretty good for moderate gaming.

    • Yep agree G series is not good. noise, thermal management no good, etc. Returned mine to dell just couldn't get any of the issues solved nor was any of the issues uncommon to them. Now have an inspiron and keep my desktop for gaming. (glad dell agreed to refund it, sad I still don't have a gaming laptop)

    • mine is good after limiting the CPU frequency in throttlestop to 4.2ghz

GPU never overheats in mine, just the CPU

  • I purchased 2 on the last deal for me and wify.
    Very happy.

  • I have this laptop, and I have 0 issues.
    It is a great machine

  • G7 7790 owner, I am not an avid gamer, more ad-hoc. Would rate this laptop good overall, borderline very good.

Fan does go crazy many a times, but the system is quick, has not given me any significant reason to complain over the past many months of regular use.

Have owned multiple Dell systems since past 2 decades, XPS 17 was my pick of the bunch, this one a close second.

  • +1

Compare with acer nitro 5 gpu 3060. Which one better?

    • +1

If we are talking about GPU only, the 3060 is better than the 2070 in just about every benchmark. 2070 does have the extra vram but as far as 1080p gaming goes 6gb is plenty.

A former Dell G7 owner, Stay away!

    Thermal are terrible.

I went with after the refund the Legion 5Pi, rock-solid laptop.

    Zero issues.

  • Bought this laptop in the Black Friday sales. I like it. I haven't had a chance to game on it yet. I've been using it for office work and the keyboard and trackpad are nicer than my old Surface Book, display is quite nice considering I was coming from the surface, the speakers are much better, led lights are cool, and its got a nice design. I believe the thermal issues can be addressed by updating the bios. I've never had any issues with the loud fans, but as I said, I don't game. Oh and even for office work, the smoothness of the 144hz screen is great!

  • Got it with RTX 2070 Super for $1509 during Black Friday. Had no issues with mine

  • Acer Nitro 5 15.6" 144Hz Ryzen 5 5600H RTX 3060 Laptop
    at Centrecom is $1800.

The GPU and CPU are stronger, but missing a thunderbolt port
