Earn 100 Status Credits between Activation and 31 July, Get Gold Status (Eligible Members Only) @ Qantas

160

With domestic flying accelerating and the expected opening of the trans-Tasman bubble, Qantas’ Status Fast Track offer has returned for a limited time and is now extended to New Zealand residents.

The initiative allows individuals who hold eligible loyalty status with another qualifying airline program to fast track their frequent flyer status to Qantas’ Gold tier by earning 100 status credits before 31 July 2021.

In addition to expediting their standing in the program the offer also includes a more generous baggage allowance and 90 days of complimentary access to the airline’s network of Qantas Club lounges.

More information on qualifying at https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/status-and-clubs…

We're also seeing prices nearly halving already across the Tasman - I personally have a friend who bought a ticket last week who is now seeing it for half that!

cant believe international travel is actually happening for us. felt like forever

    • It is?

      • AU > NZ travel is back on!

        • +13

But AU is an NZ territory.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: It is in the constitution and also on the OZ flag.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: Actually, possibly, the other way around. From the covering clauses of the Australian Constitution when defining the States:

The States shall mean such of the colonies of New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia, including the northern territory of South Australia, as for the time being are parts of the Commonwealth, and such colonies or territories as may be admitted into or established by the Commonwealth as States; and each of such parts of the Commonwealth shall be called a State.

@chrism238: Haha. +1 for the effort on a joke.

AU > NZ feels like a state domestic travel rather than international

Is there any point to QFF status at the moment, given the benefits are usually for international sectors?

They are currently only flying To London and Rio, and specifically state that QFF status is not recognised on these flights.

Even partner airlines, such as CX, who are flying, are not QF codesharing and not recognising QFF status or allowing QFF points earning.

The feel good factor for those who like to look at themselves in the mirror.

So far I find gold status quiet pointless. Well, not that I have gotten gold with any one of the ff program anyway. Got silver across all three due to my not so loyalty.

      • It gets you access to lounges, which can be very nice if you are flying economy. Especially if they have showers and you are flying international.

        Our Virgin airways history
        - 2017 - we got cheap round the world business class flights with Virgin. ($3500 each for Melbourne - Hong Kong - London - LA - Melbourne.)
        - This, combined with a business class flight to America, (that my other half’s company paid for), got him Platinum status.
        - After a year this went down to Gold,
        - Gold got extended through Covid,
        - A cheap flight to Sydney, in May, allows us to extend gold for another 18 months.

In 2019 we had enough points to fly business class to Europe on Qantas and Economy class back on a Virgin affiliate. This gave us priority check in and access to lounges for every airport we were in; including transit airports. It meant we could have a shower, and decent food, during transit.

If we wanted to build up the 100 Status points with Qantas we could, probably, parlay this into Gold Status with Qantas as well; but it would take two Perth Flights and a Sydney one so, probably, not worth it.

      • I will keep these (not so) secrets to myself then and let people like you stay in Silver.

This must be a rerun from last year. I am on my way to Qantas Gold but need to plan carefully: Perth to Sydney 20 credits, double credits: 40, point club : 15 credits so one PER-SYD flight gives me 55 points. I have to book my return yesterday with Virgin since my membership date is 1st May. I already booked a flight in May so getting 100 credits in May will give me Gold for roughly 2 years.

I also have few flights in next few weeks for work, will need to omit the FF number in these bookings.

    • Well depending on your membership tier ends I suppose. Mine ends in December so I will have gold for all of this year and the end of next year which is definitely well worth it.

    • +1

Gold is useful for domestic lounge access and premium phone support (where you need to call them you only need to wait 2 hours not 5 hours).

      • +1

I can only speak for Qantas but I find priority check in (Gold & Platinum /Domestic &I nternational) one of the most convenient features. Just walking into the Airport and not having to que for hours depending on the flight is great. Followed by lounge access and extra baggage limits (which I used least as usually travelling for work). Lounge and Baggage, especially when traveling international is probably the biggest difference between Gold and Platinum; though it depends a lot on the Airports and lounges available.

        • I do a lot of domestic travel (in economy, so I almost got to Platinum precovid the hard way) but I've never really noticed the priority check in with the machines. But yay for the etags.

          • +1

@SirFlibbled: I guess it depends a lot of where you call home. Until January last year, so just before the bug, we used to live in Cairns and before that in Townsville (now BNE), No machines up there but at certain times the counters used to get extremely busy from all the tourists. So priority check in was great. And of course for international travel. Funny that you mention the etag, that would be one of the last perks I would have listed. I got two (from memory) of them when they were released (Platinum at that stage, lifetime Gold now) and put them on my suitcases. But 99% you'd still get tags anyway on check in. They have both disappeared over the years and I never bothered getting new ones (as the first ones were complimentary and now they charge you).

  • Any suggestions on the cheapest way to hit 100 status points?

    • Was good when they had the double SC last week. Got Mel-Syd via Adelaide for $150 in taxes and 55k points in business class. Total earn will be 128SC.

      • Sorry I don’t usually redeem Qantas awards - does Qantas award ticket carry SCs?

        • If you have Points Club or Points Club Plus.

          • @nightelves: Thank you - I should seriously consider tne Points Club then. Any referral link for mutual benefits (or even just for the referrer)?

            • @Gleung: Unfortunately not. You need to earn 150k Qantas points to get the club tier that allows you to earn SC on awards flight. Luckily mine carried across from last year so I still have that benefit.

              • @nightelves: Thank you @nightelves. I shall do some research then.

  • This really only benefits frequent international flyers who doesn't travel as much in Australia to get gold themselves, but fly enough that they would come close to gold where 100 status credits will help. I can't imagine there would be a lot of people who fit this category.

If you're not even silver with Qantas, and not a gold FF with another program, it's probably not worth caring about?

  • got gold w aegean, been keeping an eye on status matching for a few years now, noone ever seems to be matchineg them :( esp. noone from oneworld :(

    • There was two. One from Qatar and now Qantas. American Airlines also offers a Status Challenge but there's is a bit more challenging to do.

  • I registered but didn't get a confirmation email, I assume you've just go to wait until they send something later?

  • -1

We all know that planeloads of people will be in the sky when one country or the other suddenly decide, on arrival, you have to go into paid quarantine for 2 weeks for another $3,000 per person.

Who wants to take that chance? What family could afford to take the risk?

I'm quite new to QFF program - can someone break this down for me?

Let's say I have Velocity 10k points + existing 10k (Bronze) QFF and not a lot of status credits, but wanting to get to Silver.

This expression of interest is to convert my Velocity 10k into QFF?

    • +1

You can't convert velocity points to QFF, or vice versa. In general you can't convert an airline's points into another airline's points. There are a few rare exceptions (eg you used to be able to convert Singapore krisflyer points into virigin velocity, and vice versa, but you lost some points in the transaction as it used a 1.5:1 ratio in both directions, and it is no longer offered).

Your points are not worth much, about $100 in each program. Your best use is probably to redeem them for economy domestic flights (eg Mel to Syd on Qantas classic rewards, Syd to Mel on Virgin), once you have a trip you wish to take. They do expire and do get devalued, so do not be afraid to use them if you get a reasonable opportunity to do so.

Also silver status is not really worth having, it's gold most people want, and you need lots of SCs for that (700?), you really need to fly a vast amount to get that. It is, IMHO, not even worth thinking about unless you are already very close (80% of the way there), or have an employer who will pay for lots of flights, or will travel RTW 4 times a year in economy each and every year, or are eligible for a fast track program like this (usually by matching some other status you already have). If you're not in any of those categories, then just think of airline status tiers as a weird hobby game played by seriously-committed status-obsessed aviation geeks, and ignore it.

      • Actually, if you can get enough points together, your best use of points is converting them into business class flights.

        • or flying to Lorde Howe

          • @nightelves: Completely agree with both of you. I was just getting to address the scenario as given, with someone who has 10K points in both programs. In that scenario, trying to save enough for business is likely to be pointless (as they don't have anywhere enough points for international travel, and domestic business is rarely enough of a step above economy to make it worthwhile, IMHO). But if you've got decent point balances then biz RTW trips are ideal.

      • Amazing, thank you deeply for the breakdown!

You've read my mind - was planning to book a surprise Melb trip (econ) in late May for the mother hen, and use up the points haha

My objective of getting to Silver is obviously to attain Gold, but nevertheless Silver > Bronze as it gets me 50% more points than what I'm getting now. (I regularly fill up the car with BP-98 which auto converts to QFF & sometimes they have crazy 10x bonus points).

Was also looking into QFF credit cards, as all my expenses/bills come from my CBA rewards card (which I used to use points to convert to $-off at Myer, but rarely buy anything from there nowadays).

Still confused what this Fast Track does though and why it mentions other carrier points - would you also be able to pls explain? haha

Thanks again for your valued input! :)

        • +1

If you hold eligible status in one of the competitor frequent flyer programs listed in the table, then you may qualify to participate in this Qantas promotion which would fast track you to Gold status by earning 100 status credits before 31 July 2021. However if the OP didn't make sense to you then odds are you're not a person who would qualify.

Pursuing status is not recommended for casual flyers (unless they have excess money to burn). People can waste a lot of money for no significant benefit.

However, you can collect and spend points as you wish without needing to pursue status.

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Excellent thanks again!

So even though I am a casual flyer, and will be collecting/spending points as you have said, I have 40 Status Credit with Velocity but want to migrate everything to Qantas QFF - that would mean I apply/register for Fast Track?

            • @Brodo Faggins: No, you're ineligible for Fast Track and should forget about status.

If you are interested in points, I hope you've done a lot of research, understand what you can get (and what you want to get) with points, and what a point is worth to you (which will inform how much effort and/or cost you expend to pursue them).

Like with status, many people have no real clue what they're doing with points and can easily end up doing financial damage to themselves for no gain.

              • +1

@UrMumsOnlyFan: Completely agree. Forget about status, and if you want a reasonable ballpark value of points for QFF & Velocity use 1 point = 1 cent for spending, less for earning. In general you don't want to do anything just for the points, it should be something you'd do anyway, but you can alter supplier or bring it forward if the points make it worthwhile. If anyone offers point incentives to do something, run the numbers versus the best value non-points alternative, and 98 times out of 100 you'll find it's not worth bothering with and you should use the best value non-points alternative instead. The only thing I think might possibly be worth doing for the points alone is slowly & systematically churning rewards credit cards, and if you stick to cards with no annual fee (or annual fee fully rebated), and always pay it off in full before the statement due date, and close it once you've got the bonus points in your FF account, then I think you won't go far wrong. (Disclosure: myself + partner sitting on 1.2M+ QFF points, 14 Qantas lounge passes last time I looked [which when we aren't flying we give away to family, but at the moment almost nobody from our families is flying], but no status at all, and status is mathematically not worth worrying about for casual leisure flyers like us - the cost/benefit ratio makes it pointless, it's high cost but no real benefit as we can already get into the lounges whenever we want).

Not sure if anyone would be interested by if you are a Monash Uni Alumni you can get a 30% discount on buying Qantas Gold Class.

    • You can't "buy" gold status; it has to earned with status credits… you're probably referring to a qantas club membership not qantas airline status

      • Yup, that was what I meant.

  • +1

Applied with Krisflyer Elite Gold Monday night, got approved this afternoon.
Only asked to send copy of card, no activity history needed.

  • Wonder whether we can stack with below, which means a return economy trip to NZ would net just 100 status credits.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/622317

    • probably but you'd have to book before May 15 to take advantage of the DSC.
