There are rumours (and have been for at least a year) that the Apple TV will be replaced soon.

I thought there was an Apple event this week or next, maybe this price reduction is actually signalling a new model?

I googled new model Apple TV 4K before posting and all I read were reports of rumours. There may be a new one but this is still a decent machine and price for those in the ecosystem.

What are the benefits with this product? With things like smart tv's and chromecast (Some tv's with build-in chromecast) i find it hard to justify such a large price if it doesn't do anything different

    • +6

One of the main reasons people get an apple tv is due to the crappy, discontinued or non existent smart TV features. If your TV does everything, great! But the time will come when the software isn't updated and getting an external device (Apple/Chromecast TV) will breathe new life into your TV without having to buy a new one.

      • Ofcourse, but what i am asking is for almost 3 times the price of Chromecast ultra what does it provide that is different and justify's the pricetag

        • This 'deal' is 5x the price of a new Google TV if you get the Netflix bundle…

        • +9

Every Apple TV deal there’s someone wanting to be convinced of the merits of it over a Chromecast or a potato “smart” TV that they claim “does everything”. If you’re happy with what ever you’re using, don’t buy one. Personally I won’t ever go back to not using an Apple TV on any TV - but I’m not paid a commission to convince you to.

If you have to ask the question then this product isn’t for you.

I personally can’t stand smart tv os. Especially as. Plex user. Currently with the android app in shambles. Apple TV is the best experience for that by far.

Couple of other thoughts, from someone who has both a Chromecast and an Apple TV 4K on an older Hisense.

          1. If you're in deep with Apple, the handoffs are quite neat (eg the Airpods just hand off from the phone to the Apple TV box if you start watching something, which is simpler and neater than the taotronics box I have to use otherwise) and there's obviously Airplay, which comes in handy.

          2. There are a number of exercise apps (e.g Zwift) that have been developed with tvOS versions and no android equivalents. Zwift is much more immersive on a big screen and the Apple TV allows me to airplay to it or it can run the game natively (thought not at true 4K). Cleaner than having an HDMI cable from a laptop or phone and frees those screens up to other things (like companion apps etc). The best experience would be a small gaming rig, but it's hard to beat the AppleTV's bang for buck.

@cletus75: Thanks. I legitimately want to know the answer to the OP's question, with no prejudice as I've not really used a tv in recent years. Now I'm trying to get a bunch of things streaming and such it's been a learning curve. Currently my LG (2018ish) does what I ask of it, but I never know if it could be better, easier, or what I might be missing out on.
I have no antenna cable and not amazing wifi in the room with the TV but from reading the comments it sounds like I could benefit from an AppleTV but only marginally at this point, and probably not at $200 worth right now.

            • @cynicor: That sounds like a reasonable approach. It does have a nice interface and I like the ease of using airpods but I wouldn’t have been able to justify it without the zwift app - which is obviously fairly niche. ;-)

    • The only use case that interests me is for my older LG 4K OLED, the Crunchyroll app. It doesn’t work on my Apple TV 3 but apparently they fixed it for the 4K.

Works fine on the Google TV

I’m not arguing about what someone may want to buy with their money.
          Each to their own.
Current cheapest price for Apple TV 4K.

I can't see any justification why this is a bargain.

      • Do you set your Apple TV 4K to 50hz or 60hz for Crunchyroll?

        • I don’t have a 4K… yet.

This product apparently has perfect frame rate matching. So it means that if the Netflix video is 24p or 25p or 30p or whatever, you won't get judder.

Sony TVs always have terrible judder on some content (eg Kayo, UK based shows on Netflix), because their android system is locked at 60fps.

Chromecasts (excluding new one with Google TV) have an option in the Home app to change from 50hz to 60hz, so you can manually change it to match the source. It's not automatic, but at least there is a workaround. New Chromecast is awful on 50fps content regardless of the video setting, so there must be a bug.

Plus, most people make an ios app as first priority. So, for example, Kayo still don't have an LG TV app.

      • TIL; this is why my Xbox looks worse than my native LG Netflix app! No 24fps setting, but the TV can run at a native multiple of 24hz.

Available with tvOS 14.5, not that I own an Apple TV. Good to know!

        • If you set your Xbox to 60fps it should be ok. 50fps would be bad.

          • @MisterTee: It’s not that bad, it’s better at 120hz (multiple of 24), but my OLED doesn’t support 4K/120hz.

There’s a 24p function for certain apps, but Netflix hasn’t enabled it for Xbox.

    • I still think Apple TV is the best media player out there. I bought the new Google TV with Chromecast but the wireless is shit on it. Also the benefit of being able to stick a LAN cable in the Apple TV is worth the extra cost alone. Will be waiting for the new model as it must be just around the corner.

      • Better than Nvidia Shield Pro?

        • Depends on what eco system you’re in. If you’re Apple, Apple TV is better, if you’re android. Shield is better. They’re both pretty on par with one another.

However, currently the android Plex app is working horrendously. So I’m glad I have a mix of both.

The only platform that supports frame rate matching, 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos on Netflix.

Usually has the best version of app from almost every streaming service since many services develop for tvOS first.

Support for the iOS exclusive Infuse app, by far the most polished app for streaming your own media.

Apple Music support. Ability to easily install, run and keep up to date apps from multiple regions. Unified media library and watch lists in the TV app supporting a wide range of services including all the local catch-up apps.

Twice as powerful as the Nvidia Shield therefore able to support high quality gaming experiences through the exclusive Apple Arcade service. Integration with other Apple devices and services such as HomeKit.

      There are heaps of reasons.

I am interested in getting something for some light gaming for my kid - have you tried this? Are there a decent number of titles? Do your other devices need to be on the Apple ecosystem to just play the games? Can you game smoothly @ 1080p?

Also any idea if you can install Kodi and Jellyfin on it?

        Thanks.

        • +1

I’m not massive into mobile gaming however the games are good. They’re definitely more bigger versions of phone games or indie games rather than anything too serious.

You don’t need other Apple devices, you can use Xbox or PlayStation controllers with it. If you do have other Apple devices though you can also access the subscription and games on those.

I’m not across the technical details but the games are definitely smooth. 1080p certainly sounds about right.

You can’t install Kodi without jail breaking however there is a fork in the App Store called MrMc.

If gaming is a big focus I’d recommend waiting for a new Apple TV which is likely to have performance similar to or greater than a PS4.

If you have any know how, and enjoy a little bit of tinkering. You might be better off getting a Raspberry Pi. Can run all streaming apps, as well as emulate lots of the classic consoles with ease for some gaming. Way more choices for controllers too.

          • @ONEMariachi: Not the best advice considering the Pi isn’t a certified Netflix device so you’re limited to some unusable resolution.

Also more generally it doesn’t have anywhere near the performance of an Apple TV or really any 4K HDR capability to speak of, especially for streaming apps.

            • @tp0: I offered it more as an option for gaming, as it seemed from the comment that that was more important.

My favourite streaming device, I use Android and Windows in all other cases.

Can't fault it, works amazingly well.

  • My lv smart tv got software update recently so i can airplay from apple devices directlt now without any additional device. Are there any other advantages of apple tv?

  • +1

Cheaper if you use 6% off or more gift cards on Catch. There is also $20 off with LatitudePay at the moment which makes it cheaper than this post but it can’t be combined with gift cards.

  • My use case, older tv without Arc HDMI, Apple TV (in conjunction with Homepod) gives Dolby ATMOS which works pretty well.
Not as good as a seperate system etc etc

  • Can I install my current fav App Kodi on this Apple TV ? I don't see the need to subscribe to a service like Plex just to watch the few shows I have.
