Carton of coke for $10 as well ~42cents a can

  • No harms in trying to get Dans or even 1stChoice to match it.

Unless someone has had Dan's accept a printed copy, my experience is that you need the actual ad out of today's Herald-Sun.

Dan Murphy's will price match pretty much across Victoria (my father got a price match in Warnambool).

Is it in todays Herald Sun?

    • It's usually in Wednesday's herald-sun, full page ad at the back of the entertainment/lifestyle liftout.

You need a copy from the actual paper for it to work at Dan Murphy's or 1stChoice.

More importantly though, if you're buying the Beck's offer, you really need to check if you're buying the imported one or the local knockoff.
They are as different as chalk and cheese.

A very good debate is here: http://www.beeradvice.com.au/51/becks/

There is an actual post there from Beck's Au which claims that the imported one is stale and exposed to heat along the way.

I've bought an actual imported bottle of Becks here in VIC and compared it to a locally produced bottle.

    The difference is ASTOUNDING!
I'd take 3-5 mth old imported stuff Vs the locally brewed one.

I'm not advocating Beck's altogether but make sure you're paying for the REAL thing and not slag off Becks because you've bought a local knockoff brewed in SA.

    • Same applies for other "imports" in my opinion. At my local Dan's they have imported Peroni and local sitting side-by-side. You can check the first 2digits of the barcode if you're unsure - anything starting with 93 is brewed in Australia.

Don't price it at Dan's etc. Reward the company that it actually giving us the deals. If you just price match all the time ( Dan's, Officeworks etc) then you are just rewarding them for doing no work and allowing them to wipe out what is left of the competition, which will result in inflated prices and no deals. Price match should be a banned word around here. It destroys competition and It's just going to come back and bit us on the arse in the future. Not that the human race has good track record of seeing more than the instant gratification just in front of us.

i think in this case its a bit different. many of these specials would actually hurt dans and first choice rather than help them.
i reckon this is the reason getwines does this, they know its far easier to pricematch at dans and first choice which is what everyone does. so by bringing in such specials it forces dans and first choice to honour them, making them lose potential profit, while getwines gains the publicity.

gernerally i agree with you though. i try to buy from those who have the sale rather than price matching somewhere else, as it encourages the sales

      • I don't think they really care. They can loose money for much longer than the little guys can. That's their whole game. Its a war of attrition for them, and they have very large coffers.

Anyway. Props to GetWines for for the deal.

I have been buying from the big boys with GWD deals for over a year now, and I seen and heard many stories where on the day of the special, DM (most specially) would mysterious sell out of the sale items and then once the specials were over, their fully stocked the next day. So, I think do care very much, because it's eating away at their profit margin at the end of the day……for most of the year actually.

Let's hope GWD is around for many many more years.

exactly what boozler said. it slowly eats away at their profit margin, and its pretty consistent. at the end of the day theyre making less money, and they definitely care.

and a lot of the time they do hide the stock, to avoid the pricematches

I agree in principle - and refuse to buy fuel at either Coles or woolworths petrol stations because I don't agree with their duopoly.

That said, it's 11km for my house to GWD, allowing for traffic dramas, it's between 40-60 minute round trip to save $15-$20 on a case of beer.
In contrast my nearest Dan's is 4km away, or 1stChoice is only 3km away, and I can get to either in 5mins max.

If GWD setup an outlet on my side of the Eastern freeway, I'd go there no problem.

  • good,I will try dan's tonight, hopeful it works.

    • not sure about dans, but first choice have rejected me many times saying they will only pricematch in the trading hours of getwines. which is the reason why i didnt go pick up a case today myself, was too late by the time i saw the deal :(

      • Dan's are much more liberal in accepting the vouchers in my experience.

Can confirm Frankston Dan Murphys priced matched the case of Carlsberg for me tonight. Charged me $29.90 for it.

  • Nice find. Shame it wont get delivered in time for my day off tomorrow :p

  • Price matching at Dans or 1stChoice for other people who don't actually live in Vic.

Unfortunately in my experience whenever I get to Dan Murphy's for one of these price match deals they have a sign up saying they are out of stock of that beer before you even walk in the door. It's as if they check the deal then take the stock off the floor and put up the sign so I don't even bother to try any more. I would reward the business with the great deal but it is too far out of the way to get to for me.

Dan Murphy staff check the papers on Wednesday mornings before opening, and remove most of the stock of the beer on special. They've been doing this for months at most of their Melbourne stores. They will sell a couple first thing in the morning, but the majority is removed to the back of the shop. There is a long history behind these sales (between GWD and Dans, at one stage the weekly deal was always Corona and Dan Murphy's were losing $10 per slab sold (and in the early days of these coupons they were having to price match hundreds of slabs).

I've found that First Choice are better to match the deals if you cant get to Richmond

Agreed 100% with drdolphin. I've never had any BS "out of stock" excuse from 1st choice or extremely low volume of the sale item from them. Good example, just yesterday I rocked up to DM in South Melbourne 10minutes after opening and went straight into the freezer for the Carlsberg, there was None!….proceeded to look on the floor and found 1 slab left. I asked the salesguy how come there's only 1 slab when on a NON sale day, the beers are plentiful he mumbled something along the line "Because of GWD we're out" OK, I've heard that before. Went to 1st choice down the run to grab a 2nd slab, it was a totally different experience with at least 30 slabs available.

It seems 1st Choice has a different way of running their business. Kudos to 1st and GWD for keeping up the good fight for my precious $$.

        • Does 1st Choice ask for the newspaper cutting?

        • To Sentinel - Yes, Ist Choice ask for the coupon, thay also make you pay cash (as the coupon is for cash purchases only).

      • I have 3 Dan's and 2 1stChoice within driving distance off my house. I find that the 1stChoice often don't have stock on the floor. 2 of the Dan's always have stock, and the 3rd Dan's is a 50/50 chance (it's smaller).

The only time I've completely missed out recently was when they had Hoegaarden between Christmas & New Years. I'm not surprised though, this isn't a high volume beer…

  • You can check the stock levels online though for DM at least… they can't say "out of stock" when their website says "In stock", do they just lie to your face if you ask them to check THEIR system? (because I know websites can not always be accurate). Especially if it says something like "In stock more than 6 cartons" or whatever, and then you get there and they are all "what, becks no, no becks here".

    • In my experience they just lie. I was told their website is updated daily so reflectes the previous day stock. They like to claim that they sold out a few minutes after opening, but in reality they take the stock out the back.

Make sure you have the Herald Sun from Wednesday or Saturday (whichever one is relevant.) Even though the offer runs for a few days, you needed the Wednesday paper to get it.

They all honour the deal (asuming they have stock), but they want that silly piece of paper. Why? To make it a pain in the bum to claim the offer.

So make sure you buy that paper the day you see the offer on here.

Ah!!!!!! 12 cans of Dublin brewed draught Guiness. Beer doesn't get better than that (for me :P )

    And for $1.66 a can :) :) :) :)

Hellooo again fellow OZ-Bs, I've just been today.

The A$9.99 coke offer is great IMHO. It isn't local. It's from the USA.

The Becks too checks out. German imported. The beer usually have a life of 1 yr as mentioned.

Looking under the box, it was produced Sep 2011. Cracked open a bottle tonight, tastes the part! Get yourself a slab!
