    Still waiting for $99.

  • Is the Samsung Evo 970 pcie M2 faster?

    • Their advertised speeds state read/write speeds of 3,500/2,500 MB/s

      • You mean the Samsung Evo's speed? Is it then worth $40 more?

        • +1

I would say for endurance and quality, samsung is worth spending extra money for

    • +3

Yes, by a decent margin. Is it worth the extra money? I would say so with the cashback. But for everyday use you're not going to notice the difference unless you're copying large amounts of files and such.

      • For gaming? Would it make much of a difference. At the moment I don't have and M2,. But U have a 1tb crucial data SSD. I haven't finished my build yet, should I bother with an m2? SSD?

        • +1

Absolutely is. The performance of an M2 drive is leaps and bounds over a SATA drive. The interface in itself is many times faster.

          • @b2dz: Also no cables with M.2 SSDs. With SATA SSDs there are at least 2 more cables to install and cable manage.

          • @b2dz: How are they in terms of longevity?

        • Not really, lots of tests have been done with SATA SSD's and nVME m.2 SSD's for game loading times and it's basically the same.

That being said, nvme ssd's are going to be more important in future game titles that support technology like RTX I/O, Microsoft DirectStorage and whatever AMD's implementation will be called. Essentially because nvme uses the PCI-E interface, they'll be able to load and decompress assets on the fly with the help of the GPU to do some of that decompression. It'll be basically the PC's implementation of the SSD tech in the consoles, like the PS5's dedicated chip for the SSD compression.

SATA just sadly can't do that, so if you ask me, this is a fine SSD for using as a boot or game drive and it will give you some future proofing a bit. But honestly, this tech will take a while to be implemented. So if you go for this you'll be fine. You don't need massively faster drives just yet and considering how cheap drives are these days, you can always upgrade to something else down the line if need be. But by then PCI-E 3.0 will be more of a bottleneck than the drive, so you might need to upgrade to a PCI-E 4.0 CPU, drive and MOBO.

      • iv found with my 1TB P1.

If i have to do a large itunes backup (lets say the device has over 40gb of data)
it will actually grind my pc to halt 5 minutes in to doing the backup
to the point where the PC can barely load up a webpage

i would recommend getting a Kingston A2000 as a cheap alternative
