  • Perfect timing!! Was looking to buy a 500GB 860 Evo M.2 for my laptop, and an 870 QVO 4TB for a desktop to replace a failed, unrecoverable hard drive.

What's better between the QVO or EVO 4TB drives? I need the most reliable 2.5" one, not necessarily the fastest.

    • QVO or EVO 4TB drives

      EVO

      reliable 2.5" one

      PRO

      • $910 for the Pro, that's pretty steep. What's the most reliable between the Evo and QVO? The Evo? The only benefit the QVO provides is the price, it's not more reliable is it.

        • +1

Pro - overkill for most people, unless this is for a server or heavy video editing (you get paid producing contents which can justify the spending or you earn a lot and just want the best). The only exception if you want to buy a SSD that probably will work with PS5 - 980 Pro (not confirmed though so it is still a gamble).

EVO - most popular range, good all round performance.

QVO - you need cheap SSD storage and will do mostly reads on the SSD (or at least large data write speed isn't very important - i.e. gaming).

Reliability, you cannot really judge. While TLC (EVO) is better than QLC (QVO), while an SSD dies, it is often not the flash chips went totally bad.

          • @netsurfer: Thanks for your help. I understand that when an SSD fails the data is unrecoverable. Just had a terrible experience with a 2 year old Seagate Ironwolf 6TB where the read head corrupted the whole drive, not even Seagate could recover the data.

So the technology used in the EVO is generally more reliable? It'll be used for photo storage. I currently have an 860 Evo M.2 which has worked really well as a boot drive for the past 2.5 years.

            • @Techie4066: You generally cannot go back to the drive makers for data recovery (they will generally do the warranty, but not data recovery). You need to go to a data recovery specialist. Normally, the data recovery specialist will determine which component is faulty and replace it with a component from a donor drive (an identical drive that's sole purpose is provide a spare part (or parts) for data recovery). It is a tedious process and costs more than the drive itself so you can understand why Seagate support would just replace it. One of my mates paid $1300+ for data recovery whereas my other mate was really lucky that I was able to recover photos on his SD card with recovery software.

Reliability is not something I can comment as I don't have all those drives available to run tests. I had Samsung SSDs died, but they were mostly first gen of new technology (i.e. Samsung's first gen TLC SSD). So, if you look at 860 EVO, it is the 3rd iteration (840 EVO, 850 EVO, 860 EVO). 870 QVO is the 2nd iteration of QLC based tech. I've been burnt by Samsung first gen tech. Their second iteration onwards seem okay so far.

EVO has 5 year warranty whereas QVO has 3 year warranty. However, backup important files on multiple storage devices (different technology types if possible). My Samsung 840 SSD died within a year so don't assume SSD will always turn out to be more reliable. Samsung's SSD warranty is really good - they normally give you a new drive that's current gen (but no data recovery).

Seagate got me to send the hard drive to Amsterdam for free where they have their own in-house recovery service. They had a 1 month turnaround, however even after replacing the drive head (which I know is very difficult), the platter was too scratched up to recover the data. They sent back the drive along with two replacements, likely refurbished.

I have two local backups, but want a reliable primary storage internally in a home PC where I will access the files.

I guess Samsung doesn't offer data recovery because everything is pretty much corrupted when SSDs fail. So I guess I'll go with the EVO.

                • @Techie4066: Well, it depends on the actual cause. For example, my mate's SD-card (which is flash base storage) was recoverable by software, but my SSD failures were all completely dead. A relative's laptop won't boot (I setup that laptop with a Samsung SSD). I am hoping it is just boot sector corruption. He is not tech savvy enough to do troubleshooting (and I did not leave him with a flash drive with Windows 10 install). However, I must say I am disappointed. I picked a Samsung SSD (and it is a Pro series drive) hoping for better reliability. The relative is overseas so it will be a long time before I will get to have a look at that laptop to find out how bad the situation is.

                  • @netsurfer: Well, Samsung failure rates are surely less than Kingston, Adata, HP etc. Maybe not Intel, however they are slower. I have one that is 4 years old that came with my laptop which is running reliably. Hope the recovery is ok, however SSDs have that complexity and more components which could be the biggest cause of failure and obstruction to recovery. I'd throw in some luck with getting the right batch of silicon too.

                    • @Techie4066: Failure rate is an average figure. As I have more Samsung SSDs than other SSDs, so it is obvious I would have a higher chance to get failures from Samsung SSDs. Also, I mentioned I did opted for Samsung SSDs with first gen tech (i.e. Samsung 840).

It's best not to assume you will get n number of years issue free from a particular SSD based on the failure rate. It is not limited to just first gen tech products (though they tend to have more issues / higher failure rate). Even the Pro ones (which is the most expensive series and generally with MLC) do not necessarily translate to better reliability. The Samsung Pro SSD I put in that laptop was known to have low failure rate and yet it looks like it has let me down.

@Techie4066: Use ssd for fast files access, and use an external HDD to back up that ssd, unplug HDD when not in use.

  • I getting an error from the Samsung Redemption website, when submitting the cashback claim…"Oops, looks like something went wrong".

Have tried Chrome and MS Edge.

    • It's now working, claim submitted.

  • +1

For some that might be facing similar "issues" : the S/N on the box is only 14 characters, the S/N needed for the claim is on the back of the SSD itself and 15 characters long.
You also need to provide a picture of the 15 characters S/N.

Maybe obvious for most, but could be helpful for "first time claimers" …

Btw: Samsung seem to be quite efficient, I submitted the claim and got a query 1 hour and 18minutes after submitting. (So I assume if you do everything right from the first time, that the claim might be processed rather quickly.)

    • I noticed the serial number on the drive has an extra character "N" at the end. But the website is not accepting it as a valid S/N. :(

      • Any 0 vs O's ?
Try to scan it with a QR reader to see if there are any typos (cover the other barcode).

    • Thanks. Wouldnt have thought a different S/N would be on the ssd itself

Although I worked this out when submitting, this is super helpful and I wish it was part of the original post.

  • Looks like several retailers have jacked their prices in response to the cashback promo.

  • nvm wrong thread…

  • +1

it is annoying, i keep getting invalid serial number when submitting
    anyone has similar problem?

    • +1

I am getting invalid serial on one of my ssds.

      • I emailed the team at [email protected] with the relevant details and a few days later I was able to submit my claim.

    • Have the same problem, seems like a common issue

  • When I try to claim from this page

    https://www.samsung.com/au/offer/ssd-cashback-2021/

    and go to the URL

    https://samsung-redemption.com/au/login

it returns a Secure Connection Failed error. Tried a different browser, same issue.

    Anyone else having this issue?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Yes I am getting the same issue for the last few days. (trying to check the status of my claim)

      • Any fix for this? My antivirus keeps saying "we've safely aborted connection on samsung-redemption.com because it was infected with URL:Phishing"

  • Can someone confirm the $123 cashback as I can't find it on Samsung page for 2tb 860 evo

  • Did anybody already get paid after being approved?
I was approved on 1 Mar (email confirmation) - but payout could take up to 60 days (wasn't expecting it to really take that long, but apparently it does).

  • Something wrong with the form, keep getting invalid serial number. Talked to chat support and they verified that the serial is correct, so I had to contact Au Promos. If they don't respond I'll be taking this back for a refund.

    • As I said above, I emailed the team at [email protected] with the relevant details and a few days later I was able to submit my claim.
They actually haven't responded to me saying they fixed it, but I tried submitting it after a few days and it went through.

      • Yeah I've done that yesterday. So I'll just wait then

ps. Great timing for EOFY and hopefully more eBay deals.

  • Merged from Anyone Received Samsung Cashback for Their Hard Drives Yet?

Had my cashback approved in late march for an SSD hard drive i bought, however still havent received the cashback yet.

Anyone else been waiting for a long time?

    Thx

    • +1

This is why I never, ever bother with cashback promotions.

    • My claim for a 1TB 860 SSD was validated on 1st March, received $32 cashback into my bank account 12th April, I didn't get any contact/notification from Samsung that they had payed it in just happened to notice when checking my account.

    • My claim was approved on 1 March 2021, and got the money in my account on Friday 9 April 2021

Not sure if they process monthly around the same date. They did say payout could take up to 60 days.
(I also tend to be impatient with cashbacks.)

    • Also bought mine in late March, the 4TB 860 the website says validation completed however no cashback yet…

    • Claimed 2 April 2021. The redemption portal says 'Validation Completed' but I am still waiting for payment.

      • Same here.

      • I just checked and I received mine on 20 May 2021. So 2 April 2021 to 20 May 2021.

    • Claimed mid-March, received mid-May, something around just shy of 60 days.

Have another claim to submit but the serial isn't accepted, so will see how long it takes for that Samsung promo email address to fix it up. Suspect it is because the drives are so new; manufacture date of just over a month ago.

ps. interesting to note the overall cashback prices… appears they have a lot of 860 series stock still, if the general higher cashback is any indication.

  • Received both my payments, validated 12th and 26th of March.

    • Got my $246 cashback today too, validated on the 24th March.

      • Just realize that I have submitted 3 claims on March, all received today.

  • Still waiting.

    • They finally paid me…….

      • Mine took just over 9 weeks. No email. No update where you log in. Just the money showing up in my account. It did at least say Samsung in the transaction description.

        • A heads up on the payment would be good PR as well for them but no, they drag it out and dump a few bucks in your account when you’re not looking.

          Good SSDs though.
