$8 Cashback for New Lyca Mobile Customers: 28-Day Unlimited Plans - 80GB $5 ($3 Profit), 20GB - $3 ($5 Profit) @ TopCashback AU

43

Not sure if I read this correctly, but it's $8 cashback for all new customers

And currently Lyca has discount on Unlimited S and 20 so should be $5, $3 profits.

Moderator's update

We asked TopCashback to clarify whether these unlisted plans (unlisted on TopCashback) are eligible for the $8 new customer cashback. It turns out that the eligibility is not determined by TopCashback but by Lyca Mobile, and they have not heard back from Lyca Mobile about these unlisted plans. TopCashback expect an answer after Christmas.

Our advice to users is that you should buy a Lyca Mobile plan if you need a new mobile plan and one of these meets your requirements; you should not buy one if you expect to make a profit.

They sign you up for an auto recharge which does not show in your account, but when it comes the time of expiry it does not expire but bills you again. Very hard to get that payment refunded. I am still fighting with them for mine.

If you used a disposable visa, would this show on your credit history or anything?

Is it possible to stop this from charging you? Surely illegal if you're not signing up to pay?

    • That was a mission to cancel the auto renew. It looked to me like the auto recharge was disabled so I thought great it's cancelled so I ignored it then I got an email saying your auto renew was coming out of my account soon and I'm like no I cancelled that.

Apparently it's two different things auto recharge is not auto renew.

I could not find the auto renew in the app but I did eventually find it on the computer logging it through the website.

I'm not going to neg the deal as it is a deal but as you've made clear there needs to be a clear warning they can take money in future if you're not careful

    • if you used a Credit card just lodge a dispute with issuer

      • It is not very easy to do and takes time.

      • Even if this is theoretically possible, it's annoying that this even needs to be done at all if you've turned off auto recharge

In my Lyca Mobile app, I tap Menu - Manage Payment. There are 2 options that need to be OFF:
Auto top-up setting: set this OFF
Auto renewal setting: set this OFF

DONE. No problem for me. I usually use Paypal whenever possible as it's easy to cancel automatic payment in Paypal.

      • I have not installed the mobile app. The webiste account details were showing as off by default (I have not done anything). I had no way to know that it is only controllable from a mobile app and that auto recharge is showing incorrectly in the web account…

        • Auto recharge and auto renew are 2 different things. Auto recharge is off by default because this is not a PAYG plan. You have to turn off auto renew by following the steps neoleo described. It can be done both on the app and website.

@Musiclover I had the same issue as you. I didn't use the app but checked several times on my phone. The account details seemed to show auto recharge as off and auto-renewal as off. I was surprised to be charged $7.50 yesterday. They charged my credit card that was used in the first purchase although no card or payment method was saved in my account.

Last night when I checked again, auto-renewal was on but it didn't show up a few days ago. (Auto-recharge was off.) It took many attempts and about an hour before I could turn off auto-renewal for next month. On my phone, I was stuck between Yes, turn off auto-renewal and Unable to Enter valid Cancel Date/Close. When I went on the PC, I also couldn't turn off auto-renewal at first. Took a few more tries before I could cancel auto-renewal for next month. It seems to be a glitch. When I googled, people in UK were having similar problems with being unable to turn off auto-renewal.

I emailed Lyca about the $7.50 charge but wouldn't be surprising if they don't refund. I'm considering buying another SIM from this offer so not too fussed about the $7.50 loss. I use Telstra for my main number and buy these cashback SIMs for a spare phone so there isn't any porting out or in. Now that I know how to turn off auto-renewal, I hope to have a better experience with Lyca. I've to agree that Lyca seems to have the worst customer service I've encountered. I used Amaysim briefly on the spare phone and has the best customer service.

        • @Musiclover @yanlianglee Lyca's reply today:

Once it is verified that the payment deducted is valid and there is no usage, we will escalate and seek approval from our relevant department

As the SIM card was still in my phone when it auto-renewed and I wasn't aware on the day, it has been used. Did you use your SIM card too?

Sounds like it would be a battle getting $7.50 refunded when the SIM card has been used. Will let this one go and it won't happen again. Just not worth the hassle of dealing with Lyca for $7.50.

All the best with your refund though.

          • +1

@trixieb: Yes, same. That usage should not be relevant though. This can always be escalated to a telecommuncation ombudsman and they could proabbly help. Sounds like a bit of an overkill though

I play the porting game and will never use Lyca again.

Takes me couple of mins with others but its such a lengthy process and requires a few phone calls with Lyca. My time is worth a lot more than the cashback.

    • As always, only buy this kind of deal for new number. I have dual sim card phone and also have another phone as a second phone. At least anyone can use an old phone if not dual sim card phone.

  • +1

I've had similar issues with Lyca. Very poor customer service, very difficult to get your money refunded.

  • +1

Be careful playing the Sim number porting game with Lyca, you may encounter issues trying to port your number away from it and it's somehow way more convoluted and troublesome than it needs to be.

Guess it's good for burner number only

The $8 cashback for all new customers on the 10GB plan ($7.50) and 30GB plan ($12.50) does not appear to include the Unlimited S plan or the 20GB Seasonal Offer.

    • @FDNOL @aboteh Think you're right. That is the TCB offer already posted: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877067

I reported this post to mods. The $3 and $5 SIM offers do not seem to be included for cashback. I had to search for those offers as they don't show up when you click through TCB app or website. Had to search under Prepaid plans.

  • Completely agreed with Musiclover's comment above:

"They sign you up for an auto recharge which does not show in your account, but when it comes the time of expiry it does not expire but bills you again. Very hard to get that payment refunded. I am still fighting with them for mine."

  • I've bought 4 numbers from Lyca, never had any issues with turning off auto-renew with any of them.

    • i think others are having issues with auto-recharge, which is different from auto-renew

      • What is the difference? I am serious. Please help

      • From the way they described their issues, pretty sure they are talking about auto renew.

    • -1

      BOTH can disable easily..

  • Is there a number of days we need to wait before purchasing through TC again? I thought I read that somewhere.

  • Won't neg it because others might like the deal but I had issues porting in with lyca. Wasn't worth the hassle for me

    • As always, only buy this kind of deal for new number. I have dual sim card phone and also have another phone as a second phone. At least anyone can use an old phone if not dual sim card phone.

      • Yeah for second sim in dual it might be OK. I was just put off with main number. I also had issues recieivng calls despite other networks using voda working well.

Still free money is free money

Note: expect some downtime if porting one's number into Lyca.

Unlike other MVOs, Lyca's online SIM activation process appears to serve to validate ID only. The SIM is activated as a new number, and then one has to call customer service on 122 to port the number in, upon which they will give a case number (in case not successful). Once porting is initiated it should be fairly seamless for the number change to happen, even though they inform of a half an hour wait. If using a phone that doesn't show the mobile number of the SIM, text OWN from the Lyca SIM to 3535 to receive a text confirming the phone number of the SIM.

Like others have said in other Lyca threads before, Lyca's service is very bad. I had mine connected to my Galaxy Watch through eSim and it literally heated my watch up so much that it actually burnt my skin off. I didn't notice at first because I was walking in the sun but when touching any of the metal parts to open a shortcut, it was pretty much on fire.

So there are porting issues and auto recharge/renew issues.
I'd rather pay $5 to never have these problems.

To turn off auto recharge/renew, read my comment:

I never have any problems with any sim card deals. I have experience with a lot of different sim cards from any telco. Use new numbers for freebies and other deals.

  • After reading thru all the issues; I'd reckon this is the bare minimum needed:

    1. Turn off auto-recharge (should already be off, but again reconfirm)
    2. Turn off auto-renew from the App. Apparently, doing it from the Website does not take effect or takes some time to reflect.
    3. Delete saved payment method (card) so that there is no payment linked to the account (is this allowed)?

Also, to avoid all the hassles, it is just better to Port OUT on the last day / one day prior? Are there any known issues porting OUT from Lyca to another operator?

    • You can delete the payment method using the website.

      • I swear I read someone did that and their original purchase card got charged on renewal.

        • Yes, someone did mention it, read here
Although I think this would be unlikely if the payment method was no longer on the account.

  • Anyone else has connectivity issues with Lyca?

I was surprised I had no internet connection at westfield carousel wa. It was a weeknight when there's barely anyone so I cant even blame a crowd for it. Had to login to free wifi…

    • No I didn't when I used the phone briefly at Carousel.

    • Yeah I'm in Cockburn surrounds and it sucks. I play an online card game and I frequently lose connection

Tcb has still not paid out my boost cashback from months ago.

    • Which month did you purchase the Boost SIM card? The cashback companies usually pay the Boost cashback in about 3 months from purchase date. If you bought in Aug, Sep or earlier, cashback would have been paid by now. If not, please contact the rep tightarse. My Nov purchase has been confirmed, waiting for payment now.

As a comparison, Cashrewards delayed paying the cashback for the Aug Boost SIM and only paid in about 3.5 months at the end of Nov. TopCashback was quicker to pay.

Here's a summary of my Boost purchases and payments from TopCashback:

Boost Purchase Date Payment Date Cashback
      17 Aug 2024 3 Oct 2024 $11
      22 Sep 2024 13 Nov 2024 $12.13
      24 Nov 2024 Confirmed 2 Dec 2024. Not paid yet $11
  • Just had issue with porting my number today from my order in past cash back deal. would never recommend this provider, even activation by it self is a hassle. no customer service too

  • +1

My order wasn’t even tracked from 05 Nov and pending… not sure if I want to give TCB another shot until it has been resolved; mind you I placed the order via the TCB app… it is so disappointing.

  • If you use a different email and get a new mobile number - does that mean you are a new customer, even though you've signed up to Lyca before on a previous deal?
