I'd take any gift cards if you are giving away LNY red envelopes.
PS: put the GC in a red envelope and it should do the trick.

    • Ozbargainers wouldnt refuse

Sweet, will go and hide some tonight.

    • wow.. the nerve…

    • Lol one time I found a stack of hidden gift cards in my 7am morning shop in the freezer section. Didn't realise why someone would hide a stack of cards, so I hit up Ozbargain on my phone, and sure enough there was a deal going on. They saved me a lot of time and handed me an awesome deal I wasn't even aware existed =)

      • +19

did the cards work? or had the funds been frozen.

            • @bohn: I'm slow, ok :(

Just like the guy who hid the gift cards.

        • best to… let it go…

I had a bad experience with the last batch I bought. They had been tampered with and I didn't realise it because the package looked sealed. Luckily I had saved my receipt and the packaging so after a lot of back and forth with coles customer service I got my money back. Please inspect the packaging carefully.

    • Even with the new packaging it can still be tampered with and it is much harder to check for tampering. The old packaging should have expiry date like 2022 or 2023 and the design is so weak.

The best packaging should be the old Only1 Visa, the new Only1 Visa packaging is not as tampered proof as the old one.

      • I'm looking at this packaging and i dont see how its possible to get the card out without ripping the cardboard?

        • I thought the same as you at first ;)

          • @samehada: I honestly don't believe you without proof.

            • -1

@Dowhatuwant: why should I care what you want to believe, believe whatever you want.

            • @Dowhatuwant: if you don't want to believe what others said then either go and figure it out yourself or learn it the hard way when it happened to you that you bought a card that has been tampered with, simple as that.

        • They cut it then glue it back together.

          • @JIMB0: Hmm none of mine were like that, would seem pretty obvious i'd imagine.

        • I just had a go with one of mine, and they are very, very, very easy to open with no external damage whatsoever. (Got the card out in less than a minute on my first attempt with my first chosen "tool"—should be able to do so in a few seconds with a little more practice.)

A bit of superglue and it would be impossible to tell if they had been tampered with without opening them (for the second time). If you're careful with the supergluing it will probably be impossible to tell even once they have been opened again.

          • @robinCTS: That's why I said I may have given too much clue about it and don't want to post any further details. Coles needs to seriously work on this design flaw. This is also the same design flaw for the new Only1 Visa packaging. I don't know why they changed it, the old Only1 Visa packaging is the much more secured.

They should have done what Only1 Visa done, i.e any attempt of balance check / use of unactivated card should block those card, this will prevent the activation during purchase which really deter dodgy ppl.

    • Tampering? Is it perforation or scratchie? Scratchies are harder to tamper with.

    • Can you please explain or show how it was tampered with so we know what to look for?

      • +2

It may also give idea to dodgy ppl as well so I am really reluctant to post it.

      • I had this happen with five of these cards I purchased in December 2018. Someone had substituted the cards inside with used up ones and even a VISA card. After I research this issue I understand what they do is take out the cards and when someone purchases the packet they are activated. The person checks the balance online and then is able to use them. The only sure way to prevent this is to open the cards before purchase and check the numbers on the card and the cardboard cover it comes in are the same. The cards where there is no outer cover are tamper proof, at least by this method.

        • +2

it is no use, they don't need to steal the card inside, they just need to record the number.

OP should add this to the post.

The last 11digit on the packaging barcode is "Card ID". If your card is missing or fraudulently stolen/swapped with the used card inside, immediately call Coles Prepaid card on 1300 095 072 and give them the Card ID and they will block that card so the scammer can't use it. You can ask them for refund when you send them receipt and photo of the packaging.

        • +5

I have told Coles Prepaid about the problem with their old packaging which is very flawed. The old packaging is very losely sealed and with the dotted line on both edges which can be cut with box cutter but it took them so long and they don't bother to change it until last year.

There is one more feedback I told them but even until now they don't bother to implement even until now. They should have done like Only1 Visa, any attempt to check balance / use of unactivated card should blocked that card since scammer will try to see if the card has been bought yet.

          • @samehada: Great feedback.

It seems very important to use these cards immediately after activation. I'll be doing exactly this.

          • @samehada: The latter point is a great idea.

            • @Yola: I have told them that many times but it just fall on deaf ear.

Even the flaw with the old package design still didn't get changed after so many years and only until 2019 it has finally been changed.

        • For those who think that the new packaging is very secured, I also thought the same until someone mentioned and I tried it myself, it is not that secured, there is weakness in the design. I will email Coles but I don't think they bother to listen to feedback.

So just bend the package slightly to make sure the card is inside before you buy and check for any tampering when you open the package.

          • +1

@samehada: I have never checked the packaging when I purchased them. Wow, I never knew how and why people stole these cards. Unbelievable.

  • None of these MC at my local store in lower north shore area. Not a single card is in sight.

    • +6

all in the freezers by the sound of it.

    • Don't worry someone has them ready for the day .

      • heh!

    • Yep, I went looking at the Canberra Centre this afternoon so I would knew where they were tomorrow and not waste my time if they were already gone.

But there were none to be found of any denomination. Checkouts, normal gift card section, nada, zip.

      • Just got back from Coles Canberra Centre, there are a lot of $100 with all the other gift cards. I'm holding out for $250.

        • Good to know, thanks! They might have been withholding then until this morning so hiding didn't take place.

  • +1

fantastic for my new CRedit card 3 Mo spenditure.

  • Can you purchase these online? Or only in store?

    • +1

      only in-store.

  • Does it work if I've got a $500 payment ahead? Would it be possible to use two of them?

    • +1

Depends on who youre paying. Alot of online merchanta dont allow you to choose your payment amount

  • Out of curiosity, what do people do they have have a small awkward amount left on these cards? I've got gift cards with weird small balances like 21c that I don't know what to do with. Especially with restaurant gift cards when so many restaurants don't let you split the bill - but this applies to other gift cards too.

    • +4

use at fastfood to buy frozen coke or ice cream and split payment. For small amount of eftpos/credit card just use it in ww/coles you can split payment as many times as you want at self checkout

    • +3

Hog a woolies selfserve machine and splitpayments

  • Can I use these with PayPal to just transfer me all the money spend back???

So e..g. 7.48% savings on card of 250

Then use PayPal Mastercard to send funds back to PayPal balance or bank account may cost 1%
    Reducing to a 6.48 % savings

    Would this work out??

    • +2

Good way to get your PayPal account blocked.

    • I was wondering the same thing, has anyone tried?

      • Let us know how it works out for you!? Why can’t people keep it simple and just spend the (profanity) things like they should be. Did you even find any cards!

    • t&cs prohibit this:

      https://www.coles.com.au/customer-care/gift-cards#terms

What transactions are prohibited with my Coles Gift Mastercard?
      - Any form of gambling and gambling related services
      - Purchase of money orders
      - Transactions or transfers to financial institutions
      - Transactions related to any form of money transfer service
      - Transactions which may result in the ability to access cash

i take that to mean that don't want you to cash out

      also from https://www.coles.com.au/content/dam/coles/about-coles/our-b… :

Limitations on the use of your Gift Card
You must not attempt to use your Gift Card to make direct debit or recurring or regular instalment payments. If you attempt to use your Gift Card in this way, we may suspend or cancel your Gift Card and you’ll forfeit any remaining value on your Gift Card.
You must not use your Gift Card for illegal purposes, including the purchase of goods or services deemed illegal by any Australian law or the law of any other location where you use your Gift Card or where the relevant goods or services for purchase are provided.

  • can you pay for your rego with these, will australia post except 3.5 of these?

    • I have taken them to the licensing centre and done it that way in the past with prepaid EFTPOS cards. The Visa/Mastcard attracted a surcharge

  • Can you use these on Beem It?

    • no

  • It says on mastercard site that prepaid can do atm withdrawal?

Anyone know if these attract cash advance fees? Seems like the fee when you buy takes care of that?

    Thanks bobbie

    • It says 'Not for use at ATMs'

  • +1

Could be another Australia post scam

  • Can you buy these with another gift card?
Have to cash out my NAB rewards points before changing cards and these seem like a good option if I can get them with Coles gift cards.

  • Spend $1285 (257×5) for a saving of $93.5.
    Hmm…

Wish I knew how safe these cards are from tampering as there seems to be a lot of comments here with regards to that. Guess I better get googling again.

Edit: Seems like they don't even need to tamper with the actual packaging or the card for the scammers to get the money. Seems to be an inside job, or their systems were compromised by hackers.

    • I think it should be fine in terms of the physical security of the packaging. You have to use a lot of effort to open a package to view the card details, and there is no way to put the package back together without it showing signs it has been opened. I remember going to one Coles store mid-last year and finding all the Coles MasterCards had already been opened, so it was bloody obvious that the cards were compromised…

There is no way to know whether an inside job or hackers have compromised any of the cards in your local store, so there is always a risk (even if it is a low probability of the risk materialising).

      • Read comments earlier on this thread.

      • like I said the new packaging makes it much harder than the old one. The old one is very easy to tamper with. But even the new packaging there is still weakness.

  • +4

So tempted to buy the $250 card and then buy Woolworths Wish or store gift cards through RACQ…

    • This deal is free money hanging on a shelf. If you can actually find any cards, don't hesitate, buy the maximum that you are allowed.

      • +1

Well yes and no. If you don't have any large purchases to immediately spend them on you would most likely end up with your otherwise free money tied up in gift-cards which may not suit everyone

        • This is a Mastercard though which you can use for any expense, large or small, in person or online.

Surely even teenagers with no bills still buy clothes and train tickets and takeaway food and drink?

        • If you just put the money in the bank you will earn about 1% so this is a good investment ATM. I use these cards to pay my utility bills and for medical appointments where they do not take AMEX. If I can get a bigger quantity I will use them even where I can use AMEX. The only downsides I can see is the risk of them not working and that the flybuys account you use durin purchase your spend for bonus points will most likely increase. In the past the discount was via receiving flybuys points in this case you get a discount off the purchase price so I think I would not use the flybuys card at all. I only earn 5 - 10% of my points through the actual purchase cost the rest are bonus points.

    • Does it support 3d secure? If it doesn't then you can't but RACQ.

      • +1

Good point. No idea if it does or not, if not I'll just throw them on my electricity account with Ergon - discounted electricity!!!

    • I do this all the time with the RAA (in SA). The savings do build up quite a bit over time. Especially if you pair it with an online C&C WW's shop when you have a discount code.
I can't take the credit for this idea, I stole it from a great page I followed on FB & IG #Ozgiftcards (deactivated both accounts for Dry July and haven't rejoined) - not affiliated in any way just a great page full of $$ saving ideas. They are on this site too @Team Ozgiftcards

    • +1

I will be spending my Zip Money credit balance (and more) on $2500 worth of these, then buying discounted Woolworths gift cards online (or at full price in-store).

      Great deal!

      • My regular reminder that NSW Seniors card holders get 5% off W's GCs

        • How? Might have to go shopping with dad.

I was planning to get 4% off via a union website.

          • +3

@YesPleaseThankYou: You buy them online at:-https://www.seniorscard.nsw.gov.au/discounts/homepageoffers/woolworths-offer
If he buys too many then it may sound alarm bells, but he could buy a moderate amount as gifts, for example!

            • @Peck: Ahh, cheers!

I might just stick with the 4% discount in this instance. (It's not worth the bother for the extra 1%.)

Thank you for the advice, though.

Can’t find any in Chadatone Coles

    • Can confirm no $250 GC in Knox Vic (both Coles dont have them).

      Check the fridge though. Lol

  • If anyone has big bills to pay (tax, strata, utilities etc), this offer is for them!

    • Peli-Can!?

  • no stock.
I hope Coles can look at cctv when the same group of people buy 20 of these cards that they magically found in various locations inside the store 😠

    • +6

why should they bother, they get the same amount of money.

  • I just checked my local Coles at Parkholme SA and they had 3 full pegs of $50 and 1 full peg of $100 cards but alas no $250 in sight (and no spaces for them either). No big savings here tomorrow. That'll teach me to count my chickens lol. I was hoping to pay all my utilities with them ☹️

    • Did you reserve any? 😉

      • Actually it didn't even cross my mind for that small amount of savings 😐
OK I'll hand in my OB membership now 😅

      • I tried, coles member said no reservation allowed.

        • -2

Unfortunately the $250's are all priority for Coles staff with the extra staff discount .
You really think they reserve them ?
You should watch my favourite movie : Dumb and Dumber .

  • +1

We dont actually need to use a Flybuys card to get the discount on these, do we?

  • -1

BRB going to coles and hiding the cards in some section.

    • they're probably already in the freezer

      • +1

I checked the freezer. They aint there.

  • Just saw 7 News report this haha good luck everyone

  • Has anyone managed to find a $250 gift card in store? My local only has $50 and $100 cards.

    • The $5 fees basically wipes out any benefit for $50 and $100. No use
