Would this help with quick equalising if I'm constantly diving to 5m and back again?

    • Yes, we have a lot of divers who use it for that reason. If you are in and out of the water a lot over the course of a day, don't put more in your ears at the beginning than 2-3 drops in each ear, as that's usually enough to work, then re-apply every couple of hours or so.

Does this give you the sensation of water in your ears?

My sensory sensitive child loves swimming but hates the feeling of water in their ears every time they hop out of the pool and spends 5-10minutes in distress trying to shake their heads upside down to get it out.

Will this product give them a similar “water noise” in their ears feeling the entire time?

Our drops are designed exactly to prevent that horrible sloshing of water inside the ear canal. We suggest you warm up the bottle of drops a little before putting them in your child's ears if they are particularly sensitive.

Don't put too many drops in - a couple in each ear will do so long as you make sure they go down into the ear canal. Rubbing gently behind the ear lobe can help get them down where they need to be. Maybe try them yourself first so you know what they feel like. They might appear to block your ears for a few seconds. but any excess runs straight out as the fluid is very thin.

Water will still get into the ear while swimming, but won't stay in the ear afterwards.

      Hope this helps!

Listed products are assessed by the TGA for quality and safety but not efficacy. This means that the TGA has not evaluated them individually to see if they work. This does not mean that they do not work. It simply means that the TGA has not evaluated them individually to see if they work.

@rep would this help prevent Surfers ear?

  • Hello Frank, allow me to give you a detailed reply as you raise some very good points and questions.

Of course you are right about the TGA. In the UK, the EU and South Africa our product is classified as a Class 1 medical device. Again, those authorities don't evaluate for efficacy but we are obliged to maintain a Technical Medical file which does in our case contain the details of the testing the inventors completed before the product was patented. That file also contains details of the manufacturing process which is done under properly certified sterile conditions. We manufacture to identical standards in both the UK and South Africa.

However, there is a fairly clear indication of the efficacy: the high Amazon reviews and the comments they contain. Those are from people who have bought and used SwimSeal, and we know from the statistics we see that many people buy repeatedly.

Yes, SwimSeal can help prevent Surfers Ear and we are about to launch a version called SurfSeal on Amazon Australia. It's already on sale in surf shops and pharmacies in South Africa, where we've teamed up with Zigzag magazine. It's made to the same formulation as SwimSeal, but is in a larger 20 mL bottle and will be priced to give a good saving over buying 3 smaller (7.5mL) bottles of SwimSeal. Surfers have told us it helps with the painful effects of the exostosis and the cold salt water which gets trapped in the narrowing ear canal. They also say there is a measure of thermo-protection against wind chill. Of course, that's impossible to evaluate empirically, but enough surfers have told us this that we decided to launch the new version.

Amazon Australia already has the first units of SurfSeal booked in and is going through the process of setting it up for sale and fulfillment. That should happen within the next few days, and we intend to do a launch promotion on OzBargain. If you want to give it a go, maybe buy a bottle of SwimSeal to try out the formulation, then switch to SurfSeal to get a better price per mL if you are surfing a lot.

how do you not get a build up of silicone with frequent use?

    • +1

Thanks for your question. We use medical grade silicone oil which is extremely thin and flows easily into the ear canal. It is not viscous and does not solidify. We encourage people to use as little as possible - 2 or 3 drops in each ear are all that's needed so long as you feel them go down into the ear where water gets trapped. It's no problem to put too much in - the excess just runs out but is wasted.

After a couple of hours' exposure to water - maybe in and out of a pool all day - the protective barrier gets depleted so the process should be repeated if you are going to continue to swim, dive or surf.

The 25% discount is applied at checkout, as stated in green a little below the price of $18.40 on the Amazon page. I've just checked all the orders we got through this promotion, and the discount has been correctly applied. It is still valid until 23.59 tonight (Monday) for as many units as you like.

If for some reason the discount doesn't get applied for an order placed before then, we will refund the whole amount paid.
