Android Internet TV Box $89.70 Delivered

Going out on a limb here, it looks like a good deal. Did a quick search around and it seems very cheap. Personally i own an Astone MP-310DT which i'm very happy with, don't know what this thing is capable of.

  • does this ting support old TV (CRT tv)

    • in specs Composite output - so yes.
Assuming it can change Aspect ratio??

Aldi have a similar one marked down to 59.00

I guess the question is who needs Andriod for the tv when its mainly for touch screen tablets and phones.

      • +4

        LOL, not with you.

If android can run a smart phone why not a media player? Surely the goal of google would be to get it into as many devices as possible.

    • Considering that a media player already has some sort of OS to interact with the user, and many have network connectivity, it's not so far a jump that manufacturers would adopt a widely used OS to power their boxes and leverage off the apps market. BTW it's not Google putting Android into the player, it's the manufacturer, since Android is open source, though I don't know if they had to get permission to use the logo.

Android is an OS, like IOS, Mac OS, Windows, DOS, Linux ubuntu etc, so it can drive any "device"

Google adapted it for tablets when it was just for phones so TV are the same.

Thats true but my point is, what benefit of Android on tv when most apps are touch based?

  • Keyboad (in specs) is extra $60 but is SOLD OUT!
Aldi Android TV is a dud by reports on http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1748025

Might as well buy Logitech revue (Google TV) comes with nice keyboard (from Amazon US$ 99.99) it will come with honeycomb/ android 3.1. Supported by big company, Logitech and Google

      • Sounds very interesting - thanks!
Google TV made for TV rather than possibly dodgie Android adapted for TV
can take input from another HDMI output (eg PVR, PC) & show in Picture in Picture
        BUT
"Apparently the US$99.00 price discount motive for the Revue, was to get rid of existing inventory of a product targeted to be discontinued!!!" &
"The Revue has a limited shelf life since Logitech has stated this past week that they are abandoning it."

        • +1

This is true - the Revue is being discontinued - but the Google TV platform is alive and (reasonably) well. It's also in a few Sony devices, and Samsung & LG are rumoured to be coming on board. Google's Schmidt has actually claimed that in 6 months, "the majority of the televisions you see in stores will have Google TV embedded" (sounds pretty optimistic to me, but I'm sure he knows things we don't).

I bought a Revue recently, and have been using it mostly for YouTube/Vimeo/web video. Haven't had much success with its local media playback unfortunately (still use my Astone box for that), and all the TV features aren't supported in AU, but the hardware is nice and I can also use it to control my amp & TV from my phone. The Android 3.1 update is just rolling out now, and that allows any (suitable) 3rd-party app to be installed, so I expect that to make a huge difference to what it can do. If I can get a better media playback app, then I'll be happy.

  • Hmm, the media player is almost a good price by Zazz usual standards. The equivalent is around $83 delivered from DX: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/android-full-hd-1080p-media-pla…

I would imagine Zazz is making quite a bit off the Rii though, as DX sells them from ~$32: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/handheld-rechargeable-2-4g-mini…

  • No wifi connectivity. Identical keyboard $20 cheaper w/free delivery at Meritline and Buy In Coins.

Returning my Aldi HD Android box - over promises and under delivers

  • LOL no wifi is a bummer!

  • The Rii Mini i6 Keyboard is a much better keyboard than this Rii model for a little more - I love the touchpad mouse (which would work well with lots of Android apps!). It has a learning IR remote built in instead of the useless laser pointer, and is more power efficient. I'm typing this on it now. It's only missing F9 onwards but has most other keys including the windows key. I would get the 2.4Ghz RF instead of the bluetooth model (I got that so I could also use it with my android phone and later tablet (?), which works), which needs a separate dongle and has a shorter ramge (Bluetooth range can be extended if you buy a larger/cheaper dongle and follow instructions on the web to add a 3cm copper antenna - http://www.instructables.com/id/Increase-and-extend-the-rang…). You can get it reasonably priced on ebay - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Newest-2-1-2nd-Riitek-Rii-MINI-i6…

Also Kogan has a Rii keyboard with Android keys instead of the windows keys for $39 plus delivery (you can negotiate on delivery by sending them an email, especially if buying more than one item).

  • Design looks familiar, but can't quite put my finger on it…

  • You can get the WD TV for the same price which has the same functionality.
