International tours are stuck behind the Kayo paywall, this was an unexpected announcement that's definitely saving me money

      • -5

        that's definitely saving me money

would you really have subscribed to kayo for this???

        • +3

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India summarises very well why cricket is actually a reckoning for India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and South Africa.

          • @SYLTB: ok not with you

          • @SYLTB: its not a real story, its fiction

            • @cipher: Look at the faces, eyes of the poms and indos, more than real!

      • agreed - now let's all hope that the curators dont serve up pitches that resemble a woodworkers shed floor for who-bats-least-worst-with-the-most-luck-30-overs-a-side-innings

    • +13

You are technically right but take this as a PSA and let it be, lot of people are going to find this post useful

It's a BIG deal! CA puts money they can pocket over growth of the game in Australia. It's rare these days to watch cricket on FtA-TV.

      • +1

yep, that's why they're pushing for the Gabba to get a new bigger stadium that the public can pay for. In their push they played the game in December when storm season is happening and why they're having The Ashes next year in storm season as a day-nighter….to piss everyone off, say the Gabba isn't fit for purpose but expect the Qld public to foot the multi-billion bill for a new stadium so they can sell more tickets every 2nd year for 5 days.

The Gabba is the place Australia has won more test matches then any other stadium,m An almost certain victory there first match of the test season sets the home side up for a series win. But no, lets get WA Govt to pay us to play in their newish stadium because the fortress that was the WACA doesn't have enough seats every few years. We don't care if The Gabba tests get washed out for draws because we can force the locals to build a bugger stadium we can get paid to play at.

        greedy buggers.

        • +3

aren't they building a bigger stadium for the Olympics regardless??

          • +1

@pointnlarf: They were going to spruce up the Gabba (even building a new train station & line to it) , but cricket Australia are demanding a new stadium be built and now the afl are on board both saying you guys foot the bill for a mew stadium with will rarely meet capacity and then give is good terms….

            • +1

@M00Cow: but the new Olympic stadium (which is a given now) will host AFL and cricket …. right?!?!

              • @pointnlarf: but they weren't going to build new ones, they were going to spruce up & use existing ones

        • +1

QLD 'bugger' stadium? That stacks up.

      • Bigbash is winning much of the race, as long as they don't wear out the welcome with too long a series. It's about right at the moment. Cricket is one sided globally 'most of the time'. The $$ Australia has to deliver the latest of everything VS true battler countries leaves it skewed to the max in Strayas favour. That said (and I wanted India to draw the test or better) India did some seriously dumb ,selfish shit individually which cost them. When they were on song they were very good. Not often enough, though. They also can't handle, or dish out the predictable Aussie bullying tactics.

      • While CA can certainly be a pain to deal with, any overseas tours are generally organised by the host nation cricket board. So all TV rights deals etc have to be negotiated with them, CA have nothing to do with it generally (to my knowledge).

When the Ashes are in the UK for example, the TV rights deal is with the England Cricket Board, and when they're in Aus, then CA handle it. I used to work at Channel 9 when they had cricket rights, and even when we had dropped them in favour of the tennis, we still kept the overseas Ashes since it was a separate deal (much to the chagrin of CA, I'm sure).

You must be fun at parties.

When do the games start in Oz time zones?

    • +2

Starts 3:30pm for the test matches, according to the news

      • Is that AEST? The only correct time zone on the east coast :P

        • Yes, eastern states :)

        • +5

          AEDT I believe, not AEST.

        • +1

An amusing comment for someone likely in SE QLD to make. A geographical area that's arguably in the wrong timezone.

          • +1

@tp0: Yet the "right" timezone is the one who decides to just change the clocks twice a year?

We run on standard time for a reason ;)

            • @Hinee: Nothing standard about the sun rising at 4:45am.

  • +1

Recent AFG/ZIM and SA/PAK games started about 6:30PM Adelaide.

    • +8

Yes, also read the first comments in the reddit thread about cricket being dead haha. The last test broke many viewership / attendance records! https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/1hqc283/australias…

    • +13

Have been watching cricket for many decades and the last series against India was as good as any I can remember. Yes it's still a thing.

      • +7

been watching the women? look at today's ODI Ashes highlights, Litchfield & Gardiner took absolutely awesome catches. It went from I'll have it on in the background whilst I do some work to I'll do some work in between overs & on the breaks.

        • +4

Yeah it was awesome. Ash Gardiner's catch rivals Maxi's one in the BBL the other night.

      • 100%. One of the best Test series ever.

  • Great news, was this because Kayo aren't covering it or similar? Or leveraging the great summer of cricket we just had and all the interest

    • +1

Pretty sure that Kayo would be covering it, they just don’t hold any exclusivity privileges when it comes to broadcasting Oz cricket.

      • +4

Apparently Foxtel doesn't have a deal for the rights in Sri Lanka so it sounds like only 7 will be broadcasting it.

        • +6

So I have to watch it with ads and IMO poorly produced.

The exclusive rights deals suck. Either people without a subscription miss out altogether, or people paying for a service have to use another inferior service.

It's going to get worse. Amazon have exclusive rights to all ICC tournaments for the next few years. So the world cup etc will only be on Prime Video (first time ever WC won't be on FTA coz the gov watered down the laws). We might soon be facing a nightmare scenario where different sports, tournaments & events are exclusively on various different paid streaming services. Personally I hope the mega sports streaming company that bought Foxtel/Kayo will buy all the rights to everything.

          • +2

@sav11: If DAZN buys everything then they have a monopoly and prices rise, we don't want that

            • @freoleo: Not if they're non-exclusive rights deals. Then you get the best of both worlds - people who don't want to pay can watch on FTA while subscribers only have to pay for one service.

          • +3

@sav11: Production is normally handled by the host broadcaster so would be the same either way. IMO, Sri Lanka tours generally have pretty poor production quality even when Fox/Kayo have the rights.

          • @sav11: In this case no one wanted the rights, rather than an exclusive deal. Because it's managed by the local cricket board, they buy the rights to all games. So Foxtel has the right to show all games from India, not just the ones involving Australia. 7 has no interest in the 80% of games that don't involve Australia. Foxtel never bid on the Sri Lanka games at all.

Also pretty sure you don't want DAZN owning everything, their big bet is gambling. It'll cost a fortune to subscribe (because for heavy gamblers it's a small part of what they spend) and will be loaded with as many gambling ads and in game betting spiels as the government will allow.

        • +1

Thanks for this, might cancel Kayo — I was holding off until after Sri Lanka.

  • +5

7 broadcast and especially streaming quality last i checked was pretty poor. Shocking how backwards and inferior our broadcasters are compared to most overseas. Pirate streams are of better quality much of the time.

    • +1

      Pirate streams such as?

      • +3

sport 7 (not 7 sports) but use Yandex to find them, or reddit.

      • +2

Your on your own to explore that rabbit hole. If you know, you know.

      • Plenty of good iptv services out there

      • +1

        Z2u

      • vpn to sri lanka, go to the Sri Lanka's yt channel and watch the live stream (tamil commentary thou)

        • 🤔 maybe just easier to watch on 7

          • @FullPrice: ofc, but some don't like seeing kyle sandilands' face every 2 minutes

    • I haven’t had an aerial connected for over the last year. Streaming quality via apps are adequate at 1080p and a decent butyrate.

  • +20

Smith was left hanging on 9999 runs, glad we can watch the 10k milestone for free!

    • Assuming he scores 1 run…

      • +2

Ngl, a duck on 9999 would be a peak tv moment
Glad he turned up to the BBl with a century and a 50 in his next 2 games

    • +1

Would have been at risk of not being able to watch it from a local broadcast at all.

  • +7

Amazing! Finally an Aussie overseas tour not cock blocked by Fuxtel/Kayo!

    • Wow you really like your cricket

      • +5

        Love cricket, hate Murdoch!

        • -1

yes rumours of his death can't come soon enough

        • -1

Just hate Murdoch for 2 reasons.
          1.) It's less complicated.
2.) And it's the correct position

  • -7

    Šri Lanka falling apart man

    • -3

Didn’t they only just get out of ICC sanctions last year for corruption in their own cricket org?

  • Awesome news but I doubt these will be one sided matches.

    • Let's hope you're right.

  • Oh no (read this in a singing voice)

  • +4

Thanks OP, would be good if i didnt have Kayo, would prefer to watch it on there due to the quality and consistency of the stream.

  • +2

Cant wait to see the Galle Dust Bowl in HD

  • -6

Good for those who watch cricket but I don't see the appeal

    • +8

that's why they have the DRS, so you can appeal 😋

  • +1

seven got the deal through the revenue they got from the india series. bring back india every year and cricket aus will be second richest after bcci :)

  • -7

Another OS holiday for the private school boys. Go Sri Lanka

  • +5

    Bloody Foxtel the cheapskates

Now we have to use 7plus which is like a minute delayed

WTF are we even paying Fox/Kayo for

    • Yeah, super disappointing. Must be too busy spending their cricket money on foreign B-tier T20 leagues no one cares about.

  • Free to air TV. What a bargain.

    • +1

Only if you like watching the endless ads

  • Is this with ads? I’d happily pay if there isn’t any ads

  • -1

I think posting FTA TV would be better suited to UKBargain.

  • +1

Injured bowlers, changed batting order, untried Test additions… expecting a clean series win for SL?

  • +1

    I happily watched the recent Test series on 7Sport for 2 main reasons;
Seven has Ponting in the comms box
Fox Sport has Warner in the comms box

  • -1

I see the game starts at 3.30pm. Presumably it's a short first session ahead of a long lunch from 5.00pm that is able to fit in The Chase, the News, Home & Away before play resumes at 7.30pm?

  • -2

A show on TV = a bargain huh?

  • Both in play commentary teams are as flat as the pitch. How Katich gets getting a gig at 7 is unfathomable.

    • Katich is getting a gig with the local broadcaster, 7 is just using their feed.

The 7 crew are sitting in a studio, its just Copeland and Blewy. (Punter was there first day too)

    • +1

Cricket commentary across the globe is overall pretty ordinary since Richie, Bill and Tony all left the scene sadly.
