Hitachi LifeStudio Desk Plus 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive with 4 GB USB Key $59.99 at Aldi from 17 Dec. i think this is a very good price for a very smart drive with a smart USB key (it's not actually a normal USB stick. it is a MicroSD card reader that looks like a stick but with a 4GB card stuck up. Amazon.com is selling this for $100 . so i must share this smart drive with my fellow smart ozbargainers.

  • My local Aldi has this harddisk from last batch @ 79.95 for months now. For $59.99 they are not bad.

  • Their 10" Tablet looks really good, also available 17th of December.

  • What's the word on this HDD, are they reliable?

  • I believe I read something bad about this drive in here…..

  • had it for 40 dollars opening special in melbourne sout east ALDI was a steal

  • old days no, own a few internal ones for servers, not doing too bad

  • I would never buy a Hitachi Hard Drive, their failure rate is ridiculously high. I would never rely on them for backup or even expect them to not break within 6 months. On the otherhand 1 TB for $60 is a great bargain these days. I still wouldn't buy it.

    • Hitachi International owns 17.3% of the world's HDD market. and in fact, WD's Disk reading and writing headers are from Hitachi International China Factory (which is on strike at the moment). Plus last year, WD starting merge with Hitachi as
      well….

  • Don't waste your time with USB 2. Spend the extra and enjoy the extra speed of USB 3.

    • +1

I wonder how many people spent the extra on USB3 drives when their PC doesn't even have a USB 3 socket.

It's hardly the norm on most new PC, and usually there is 6 USB2 ports and maybe 2 USB3.

Most people won't notice the difference, but they will still believe the marketing hype and pay the extra.

If you can get hold of one, I'd just rip it open and take out the HDD for internal use - cheapest 1TB unit you'll find around atm with the current insane prices.
