  • Can anybody familiar with them comment on their prices?

Best to use a price comparison website that uses your actual historical usage pattern to compare. There are too many variables going into the price. Also different retailers have different target customers and are pricing accordingly.

      • Okay that makes sense. Cheers for the heads up.

      • What website have you used that works well.

        • +1

In Victoria use the government one Victorian Energy Compare. https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/

          Anyone knows about other states?

With the commercial price comparison websites just bear in mind they are not impartial. They often get a commission from the retailers so they would promote the retailers paying higher commission over the others.

      • Hi there, Econnex does offer a price comparison site as well covering most of the Australian Retailers across all states. You can also upload your specific usage for Gas and Electricity including solar usage to ensure the comparison is accurate.

Energy Australia is owned by CLP Group. China Light and Power.

    Yeah Nah

    • Thank you for the reminder about their owners. Are you aware of a list of the ownership for all Australian energy providers? Could you direct me to it please? I need to change away from CLP.

      • +2

        Origin - ASX listed
        AGL - ASX listed
EnergyAustralia - parent CLP is Hong Kong exchange listed, majority-owned by a private family
        Ergon Energy - QLD government
        Alinta - TPG private equity
Red Energy - NSW state government
        Aurora Energy - Tasmanian government
        Momentum Energy - Tasmanian government
Powershop - New Zealand government-owned company

Any errors of additions feel free to add to this. Not an expert in this area.

        • Tango Energy is also Chinese owned. (Pacific Hydro Australia)

Powershop is owned by Meridian which is 50% NZ govt owned but also listed on the ASX/NZX.

Alinta is owned by Chow Tai Fook which is Chinese owned.

If your really care about the ownership you should check the ownership of your poles/wires (aka distributor) network. Most networks are owned by China state-owned entities. But before you guys start slamming - remember the Chinese state-owned entities bought these off the state government in auctions. Your state government already has received a juicy loads of cash to spend on you. (or the bureaucrats' pockers, but won't get into that debate here)

CLP group is majority owned by private hands with listings on Hong Kong stockmarket. Hypothetically CLP could well be listed in ASX and change their names, then you won't be against it?

      Let the trolling begin!

transfer over, take their gift card then transfer out after 31 days.

      • Yep, that's the way to go.
A lot of the benefits in privatization became the profits of marketing agencies. The big players need to be taught that their discounting strategies don't work in the longer term. We need diligent customers that switch constantly and snap up the promotions while at it

China owned corp. Also, Solar FIT is dropping to 8c.

    • Haven't checked this lately but historically EA's solar FIT is slightly lower than other retailers.

      • it wasnt too bad, it was at 11c, but is now being dropped to 8c. lol, not sure who negged me for a truthful statement

        • I have solar and EA's lower FIT rate says they don't want solar customers.

slamming China is a popular exercise, people dig it. It's the age of misinformation!

      • Didnt China take back HK?

        • There's a major difference.

    • I was getting 12c FIT in Vic, but it dropped to 10.2c in June (I think). Don't know if it is dropping further down the track, but I hope to get Gelion batteries in the next year or two if they become available as expected at the much more affordable pricing of anything Lithium Ion based (10x cheaper).

Does anyone know where you can find out the standard (base) non premium FIT rates for different AU states and territories?

  • Just for info, I went through the process and I am ineligible for any discount/offer because I have to use a CPAP. The government provides a rebate of 40 cents per day to assist with the CPAP running costs.

    • Hi R3b3I66, I am sorry to hear that. Each Retailer in the market has different eligibility requirements for their services.

  • Is that ON TOP of the CashRewards 75 day offer?

This Deal is for signing up through Econnex.
Cashback offer is for signing up through 1st Energy.
Can't sign up same electricity connection with 2 companies, both trying to get a commission for your sign up.

    • Hi Transparent, As the INFIDEL mentioned, this offer is not valid in conjunction with any other offer.

Note there have been negs for Econnex Deals in the past! I wouldn't deal with them.

    • I want to add the neg comment about Econnex. Used them for the similar deal and had to literally demand the promised stuff. And yahh, you know with whom you'll be speaking over the phone….

    • Hi the INFIDEL, we have been listening to our customers to provide great offers and clearer T&C’s as mentioned in the OP. We have also amended the process slightly so that as long as the authorised person for the property is switching they will receive the Giftcards.

  • Higher rates with Energy Australia it seems. Also eConnect tries their hardest to get of paying like last time.

  • I did check out Energy Australia via the deal link and the rates were much higher than what I am paying.

Since I've gone with Elysian Energy, I've not been able to find a cheaper plan anywhere. Also, EE does not have a "benefit" period, their rates are plain and clear; the plans include daily usage charge and an allowance for kWh for the month — your plan may change if your usage changes significantly.

    Elysian Energy — about us
    100% Aussie
We’re Australian-owned and operated. You won’t sign a good deal today and find out it’s no longer a great deal tomorrow. When you call us, you’ll speak to someone in Australia.

    Electricity Plans
Your electricity prices may change from 1st January 2021 due to movements in the wholesale market price of electricity. Please contact us for more details.

This plan is 19.4% cheaper that the Victorian Default Offer for the average residential customer using 4,000kWh per year.

Price effective from 1 January 2020.

Your next month’s plan size is determined by you recent usage:
    – A customer moves to the next size plan if they use 10% more energy than the target energy of the larger plan.
    – A customer changes to a smaller plan if they use 25% less energy than the plan they are currently on.

It looks like the wholesale pricing will be going down in January; this has been reported elsewhere, thus far I haven't seen a notification of price change for next year from EE.

Also, if you choose EE, then they have a small referral plan that will save the referrer and referee $10 per month for 3 months. You just need an existing customer to provide their own account code to get the referral discount for each person and to use the referral link when you start signing up.
