40,000 $200 Regional Travel Rebates on $400 Travel Spend Available to Victorians

6136

From Friday at 10am, the Victorian government is offering 40,000 Victorians $200 'vouchers' to travel within Victoria between December 12 and January 22 as a stimulus for the tourism industry.

You have to spend over $400 on one of the following categories to get the $200 back:
- accommodation
- tours
- local attractions

Exclusions are gaming, alcohol (except if alcohol is included in wine/brewery/distillery tasting type tour but excludes any alcohol purchased and consumed outside of the experience), fuel, food and drinks (except where packaged with an eligible expense such as a winery tour), groceries, personal items such as clothing and accessories, transport costs (rental vehicles, train and bus tickets).

It's really a reimbursement from the government though – travellers have to apply for the voucher, pay for the travel upfront and then receive a reimbursement from the government.

Still, $200 back on your trip is still $200 back!

Another 40,000 vouchers will be available on January 20, and may be redeemed for travel from January 27 to April 1, and the final batch of vouchers will be released on March 30 for use from April 6 to May 31.

Update: An extra 30,000 regional tourism vouchers will be made available to Victorians at 12PM today. Sold Out

Round 2: 40,000 vouchers will be released from 20 January 2021, 10.00am for travel between 27 January 2021 to 1 April 2021. Sold Out

Round 3: 30 March 2021, 10.00am, for travel between 6 April 2021 to 31 May 2021

        expenditure of $8m.

If you listened to Pakula, you'd see that it is actually $24 million… (plus all the admin costs)

        • +4

And if you read the reason why S&P downgraded our credit rating, it was because of long term commitments of spending that would be tough to wind down. I think our economic growth will more than account for any slight increase in funding costs. Would rather see a pro-active government trying to directly put money into where it is needed, than the Federal government putting money where it isn't needed and hoping it trickles down.

        • +3

Oh no a whole $24 million! How will we buy that $3million of land now

          • -2

            @ScruffTheJanitor:

Oh no a whole $24 million!

That need to paid from our taxes.

seriously, boomer? you complain while you had free University education back in the 90's?

      • -4

        seriously, boomer?

        yes zoomer…

you had free University education back in the 90's?

I got a scholarship, so didn't have to pay.

        • +9

Now there is a waste of someone's money.

          • -1

            @pdtmathieson:

            waste of someone's money.

            not public money though…

Only if you confuse stating facts with bitterness… I'm only interested in the former…

@jv: I mean, I was eluding to your words and the tone. Given you highlighted specific words in bold, I think you kinda already knew what the impact would be.

But have a coffee (or tea)! Go for a walk! Life’s getting back on track! Why are we sitting around arguing with people on Ozbargain! :)

            • +4

@jv: How did you go from a scholarship to showing off badges from your 75,000 posts on a discussion forum?

Where did it all go wrong?

    • +3

The NSW credit rating was downgraded too, this at least is effective stimulus unlike homebuilder

      • +2

this at least is effective stimulus

        not really…

regional vic is already pretty much booked out for the summer. try and find some accommodation…
it's just a waste of public money

        • If this is true then you have a point. Why spend money on something that's already going to happen.

          • @[Deactivated]:

Why spend money on something that's already going to happen.

            Exactly…

That money could be directed to somewhere else which would benefit Victorians more…

            If this is true

            check all the booking sites…

there's hardly anything available, and what is available, is ridiculously priced…

              @jv:

              is ridiculously priced…

Just like with any government subsidy, this may have played a factor.

                @[Deactivated]:

this may have played a factor.

I doubt it, the prices have been high for a while due to a high demand for holiday properties over the last month…

                • +1

@jv: This was announced a long time ago and 100% influenced peoples decisions.

        • the round 2 and 3 tranches of the stimulus are non peak times.

…I wish my state would do something as cool.

          • @Dr Prepper:

round 2 and 3 tranches of the stimulus are non peak times.

            When families can't use them…

As if families haven't suffered enough with home schooling on top of job losses and [home prison]lockdown…

            • @jv: Not everyone loves their family… What about people who want to treat their mistresses on a weekend away? Think of the mistresses

              • @Dr Prepper:

                Not everyone loves their family…

True… It appears Dan is betting on this strategy…

        • Part of that is because we've just started school holidays

    • You have to pay taxes to have a right to complain about that

  • Why are there a lot of Victorians moving to QLD?

  • edit : Read the faq and answered my own question.

Looks like you get the $200 as a refund into an australian bank account after you complete your trip, once you submit all your receipts to prove the spend occurred.

    • edit: you beat me with your edit

It's 200 bucks into your bank account. It isn't a voucher.

      • +1

Yep, i worked that out after reading the faq.

They really shouldn't call it a voucher if this is the case; simply call it a refund.

        • You claim the voucher tomorrow, that's why it's called a voucher

        • +1

better yet reimbursement to make it clear

  • +3

The program works on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis

… all politicians friends and families have theirs already

    • +10

Surely you jest; those people wouldn't meet the $400 spend criteria because their trips have been fully funded by the govt already.

      • Its early I havent had coffee yet..

      • If they hold a receipt, I don’t see why they can’t make a claim right? It doesn’t say who needs to pay for it, does it?

  • +1

Dammit went away last weekend :(

    • +3

Yep, now that means you're not allowed to travel ever again.

  • I wonder if adventure activities like skydiving or paragliding count. Would be pretty sweet to tick something off the bucket list at 1/2 price! :D

    • +2

I would imagine they would be - hard to distinguish between a tour and an activity like this. You're just taking a tour of the space in between a plane and the ground.

      • +1

        a very fast tour.

  • Good timing, will go to Lake entrance tomorrow.

    • Doesn't start until 12 December

      • +4

What if they drive really sloooooooooowly……..

        • They could get a traffic infringement

  • +2

Don't they need to include the CBD to be fair ?

Then it might be worth my time to figure out the loopholes .

    • Might want to try some CBD oil then figure it out.

  • +2

Two key points from the FAQs … https://www.business.vic.gov.au/support-for-your-business/gr…

What can the vouchers be spent on?
To be eligible for redemption, the following criteria must be met:
    * recipients must stay a minimum of 2 nights in regional Victoria in paid accommodation

    … and …

Can I stay in unpaid accommodation such as a holiday house?
No, you must stay in paid accommodation for your holiday. This scheme is designed to provide a boost to regional tourism businesses including accommodation providers, you still must spend at least $400 on accommodation, tours or entry fees to tourism attractions.

  • +4

Was waiting for these details. Definitely going to take advantage, hopefully I can get a voucher, I expect the website to crash so hard at 10am tomorrow!

Also, the OP should put in the post that 2 nights minimum of paid accommodation is required to get any money back. Pretty important requirement of the deal.

    • I don't think they will go through the vouchers .
There might be an initial surge but it won't be sustained .

  • Is this per person or family ?

    • Limit 1 per household for the whole scheme.

    • +1

Not a reason to neg mate

      • -2

12 negs and counting for myself… Unwarranted negs also imo

    • +3

The point is to encourage spending and stimulate the economy. Give people feee money and they might stretch their spending a bit more, and I imagine some people will find they really liked a place or had good memories from that subsidised holiday that they may return - or make it a point to go on more regional holidays to discover Vic.

It’s getting people thinking, enjoying, then spending.

      • I'll still take the $200 in cash thanks.

    • So you can put it in your bank account?

  • I assumed you can only claimed after you finished your travel, or you can claim as long as you have the invoice for said paid accommodation during the specified period?

  • Good to see the details. I'll wait for the second round, already have more than $400 worth of accomodation booked from the 29th of Jan. Now to make sure I set a reminder for that morning!

  • +3

I will be driving down to MEL from SYD later this month and Airbnb alone is $1.2k not to mention beer and shopping. I am so glad VIC is open for business and border open.

  • you are spending your own tax money for the screwup they did themselves…

  • Does it have to be already paid? I'm planning a hol on the 28th but we are paying when we get there.

    • As long as the trip takes place during the period on the voucher you get, you’re eligible.

      • Ah thanks. But we are paying on arrival on the 28th, so still OK?

        • +1

It doesn’t matter when you pay for it. You just have to pay for everything and complete your trip before you claim.

  • so valid for already booked future travel? got something for feb so have to wait for the january claim date?

  • +2

odds of the site just dying in the ass ?

    • +2

      $1.01

  • +2

Any Home owner grant or reduced stamp duty increases property prices…Any guess what $200 vouchers would do??

  • +2

Once again, government doesn't think this through. Watch everyone apply for them in a mad rush, and how many will actually get used? They should have charged $50 to get the voucher and reimbursed $250. That would stop people speculating, and only apply if they knew they'd use it.

    • I agree that part could have been better thought through. They will send you an email though after getting your voucher checking if you are still going to travel or if you would like to relinquish it.

    • +1

You’re only eligible if you spend minimum $400 on a trip. So it’s a subsidy for your holiday, not just $200 free cash for nothing.

    • +2

      Read it again son.

You don't get a voucher upfront. You get the $200 deposited into your bank account AFTER your trip.

      • -1

The purpose of this scheme is to encourage people going to regional VIC. If the vouchers are not getting used then this purpose is not achieved. So they should still put some measures in place to discourage unnecessary hoarding.

      • Instead of being rude, perhaps you should read it again.

Actually you do register for the voucher upfront. You can only claim it AFTER incurring eligible travel. People will apply for the voucher, in case they travel, but a heap of people will not use it. Once 40,000 have registered it's all over for this round.

  • can you buy $400 worth of tickets to sovereign hill ?

    • You need a minimum of 2 nights paid accommodation in your claim, then you can add other stuff like Sovereign Hill tickets.

      • Applicants must provide evidence they have spent $400 or more in the following categories: paid accommodation, paid tours and experiences, entry fees to regional attractions

$400 worth of tickets to sovereign hill on its own would be eligible i think

        • +3

Nah I think you do have to spend 2 nights:

"This includes spending a minimum of two nights in paid accommodation. "

  • is it already over ? i cannot see apply now button

    • First round opens 10am tomorrow.

      • +1

        hahah i read 10 am as 10 Dec :) I need drink :)

  • 3356 clicks - 159 likes lol - everyone is waiting hahaha

  • Do the two nights need to be consecutive nights?

  • would it valid for Air BNB?

  • I need something like this for people going to the NT, anyone know if it exists?

  • Can we do activities like skydive and then reimburse the amount?

If so skydive will be done for less than 200 dollars !!!
