Google Pixel 4a 5G $0 Upfront on Telstra's 150GB Data $99/M over 12 Months (Minimum Cost $1188) @ JB Hi-Fi

70

Works out to be a decent deal vs their current $500 gift card for the same plan. Is $799 worth of value for the phone so realistically you are paying $389 total plan costs above the phone price over the 12 months.

I feel like at this price, just get a pixel 5 and a boost 12 month pre paid sim…

    • +3

      This is 150gb per month.
Not really comparable to the 7gb~ per month on the Boost plan.

      • +3

Yeah just only if you need 150gb per month.

      • Yep, I use 5gb max, it's really up to preference.

        • +3

I turned off wifi for 2 months to see what i really would use… And as a fairly heavy user i used 37gb on the first month and 42 on the second month. I would need to start pirating on my phone to ever need 150gb.

Funny how data plans went from, "how will i survive with only 1GB data", to, "i will never need 150gb", within just 2 years.

          • @sm3004: Haha yep, I would imagine most people don't use anywhere near their plans limit on these expensive plans. For sure some people will though.

I get wifi at work, and wifi at home, I would have to do what you did and turn wifi off all the time.

    • The pixel 5 is $999, which would leave you $189 to get a 12-month boost plan for the same price. The $99 Telstra plan will give you a lot more data + access to 5g network

      • +1

Pixel 5 is a big upgrade to the 4a if you don't need the headphone jack. Worth a measly $200 extra. You can go on 5g later if you desperately need it.

        • +1

It depends on what you value, for me the pixel 4a 5g is a better buy. You get a bigger screen plus the headphone port vs missing out on 90hrts and wireless charging.

          • @Nand0sx: Water resistance was a big one for me, also many new pixel features will only be released on the flagship pixel 5. Only .2" bigger screen. Headphone ports are great, but the pixel ones are never good, they are low powered and low quality output, using the usb c adaptor provides a huge jump in performance.

            • -1

@onlinepred: All new pixel features are released on all pixel phones.

              • +1

@Nand0sx: No, only the 5 and 4a 5G get all of the December feature drop. Previous phones including 4 and 4a miss some of them e.g better GPS tracking. The older the phone the less feature they get and Pixel 2 and older gets none.

          • +1

@Nand0sx: And waterproofing on the 5, and 2gb extra ram.

But the 4a 5G has a better speaker, no screen gap, same CPU, same camera, similar battery and the $200 is nothing to sneeze at.

            • @Jikx: $800 is a lot to spend on a phone with 2018 ram specs and no waterproofing. To think you could buy an s20 for less than that price makes it feel like a complete rip off

        • Not to mention that the extra 2GB RAM means you can hold on to the phone longer before needing to upgrade.

  • So $594+$1-2 pro-rata, if you're going the ETC route.

    • How many ETCs can you do before Telstra says no more?

      • I have no idea lol

      • Anecdotally, I have heard someone on OzBargin say their "friend" failed when they tried the 3-4th application with Telstra.

        • That's pretty lenient.

          • +1

@Lizard Spock: Yea but I don't know how long the ban on new applications would be in place. I wouldn't want to be blacklisted from Telstra plans forever - just in case I ever moved someone that needed one etc.

        • +1

Yep. My “friend” also failed on the 4th this time last year. Trying again soon so let’s see how it goes

      • I guess you could just port the number out so the contract will automatically cancelled, ETC & applicable pro-rate charges will show on the following (final) bill.

      • The contract is there, everytime you sign up, unless they block you when you sign up.

        • That's generally what happens. They don't approve the contract

          • @whitelie: I've never seen it before unless you don't pay your bills

            • @kingmoron: You end up on a black list if you keep getting/cancelling contracts

    • No point in going ETC route as this sells for $599 so if you have those TCN cards outright purchase works out to be cheaper. If you don't have TCN then even with those discounted JB GCs (or buy discounted from Classifieds) will still work out cheaper.
This deal only works if someone wants to use Telstra plan.

      • +2

        4a 5g is $799

        • Oh yes. My bad. Got mixed up with 4G model. Thank you.

  • +1

I am missing when we could have a pixel phone + generic earphone + google mini. For 65 bucks per month and 20gb of data hahaha.

  • +1

Its an average deal. Definitely worth it to pay $99 upfront for S20 FE 5G on the same plan.

Before everyone comes in and comments about the touch screen issue, it is not noticeable in everyday use, and only affects you if you play games that require 'claw grip'.

There's a video linked in comments here about it too
    https://www.reddit.com/r/S20FE/comments/jtvfth/this_is_clear…

Some apps had jittery zoom such as instagram/photos but one of the software update has fixed it.

    • +1

Depends on what you value, the better overall camera experience and stock android on pixel is enough for me to stay with the pixel.

      • The camera experience is lower on the pixel as it misses out on a whole optical zoom lens, also the whole camera lag issues with current low end chipset. I do understand that many still think Pixels are good at photos though.

        • The reality is most won't miss an optical zoom on a smartphone and the camera lag you think exist, doesn't. The Pixel will consistently produce better images than the S20 FE.

          • @Nand0sx: The reality is most won't be able to tell the difference between pixel and S20FE….

The camera lag does exist, it's really bad on the 4a, and not as bad on the 4a 5g and 5. Take a photo and tap on it and watch it load and load and load. The 4a is just plain slow though.

Optical zoom is key for taking nice photos, if you ever owned an actual camera, you would realise this. Stand a little further back and zoom in to get a much better photo. Also if you travel, zoom is a god send. Obviously with the S20 FE there are no compromises with lenses as you get all of them. If you really like the high saturation, HDR +, noisy night shots of the pixel, then that's just preference right?

            • @onlinepred: Optical zoom isn't key for taking nice photos, I should know, I have teriority qualifications in photography and do it profffesionally. It seems you are overly interested in numbers on a page rather than real-world performance. Your feet are the best zoom.

The low light performance on the Pixel's night shots is truly class-leading and does not produce noisy shots in the slightest.

              • @Nand0sx: It's at this point I bid you farewell. Even DXO mark notes every photo the 4a/5 takes contains more noise than most other flagships, and in night shots it contains the most noise of any flagship. At no point is it class leading at all. Please see even last years Huawei P30 pro or current P40 pro if you actually care about photography.

I'm only interesting in capability, not numbers. Also, as a "professional photographer", did you honestly just say your feet is the best zoom?

Excert from basic photography advice " Moving in will change the relative perspective of objects. Things that are a little closer will appear disproportionately bigger, whereas from further back this size difference due to distance difference is reduced. A great example is getting close to someone's face, which causes the subject's nose to appear unusually large. Other times, that perspective difference is exactly what you want."

In Summary, more hardware capability is better than less. It would suck if you want a certain shot, but are limited by the hardware.

                • @onlinepred: You seem to have a lot of time on your hands, I suggest you use it to conduct some further research.

        • Quite many if you count DXOmark who rate the Pixel 5 as high as Note 20 Ultra which has better camera than S20 FE 5G. That with the fact Note 20 Ultra has optical zoom which artificially inflate the score.

          • @Bigboomboom: DXOmark has been proven again and again to be stupid marks. You pointed it out too. Just check GSMarena and compare using their tool to see for yourself.

            • @onlinepred: The point is, even stupid mark who traditionally dishing Pixel for fewer camera lens agrees it is better than Samsung.

And I'm using Pixel 5. I have compared it to Samsung phones in store, the issue with Samsung phones camera is inconsistencies, you are more likely to take more than a photo for a good shot whereas Pixel are more likely to produce a good shot in a single take.

              • @Bigboomboom: Did you turn off scene optimiser on the S20FE? I have both P5 and S20FE at work, we tested them and majority of photos are the same unless you zoom in, of which most of the time the S20FE will be better as P5 adds noise. Most of the colleagues at work have kids, and we all got S20FE 5g for work phones, they love it over the previous Pixel 3XL work phones they had. We told them to turn off scene optimiser though, as that can change the photos drastically. The problem for me, is that the Pixel phones make night look like day, and dreary days look like summer days, and they are so inaccurate to what I am actually seeing. People may like the artificial look from the pixel though. The pixels digital zoom is pretty bad, even with all it's admittedly amazing software, still looks like trash compared to the actual optical zoom of the S20FE.

    • sister bought one. it is quite noticeable in day to day use too.

Screen will touch itself randomly at times.

I tried it, its very annoying to a point i almost chuck her phone into the bin.

      • I would suggest to check for software update and make sure she is on the latest one.

        • Samsung release an update that they claim will fix the issue. Apparently not.

      • you are talking about fe OR pixel?

        • +1

It's the FE since Pixel doesn't have screen touch issue.

        • +1

          FE

      • Restrain it if it's touching itself too much

        • HAH

  • so how much the phone worth brand new? rrp $799

  • don't bother. 99 a month? lol

    • sometimes they give$10 off so its 89/m

      • its not worth it

  • i remember getting a pixel 3a on 59 a month and $50 upfront. some 60 gigs/m

  • HEADPHONE JACK!!!!!

  • Curious, is 5g worth it at the moment?

Thinking about 4g and picking up the 5g in a few years time when there's more coverage, hopefully then.. 5g phones be a lot cheaper.

    • Not really unless you happen to live somewhere with coverage. With the Pixel phones, the 5g version of the 4a is also upgraded in other ways that makes it worth the extra cost.

      • Didn't know there were additionally featured between the G. Will have to read to on them but thank you. :)

Appreciate you taking the time to reply

  • These JB deals don't normally allow Boost/Belong users. So an alternative is going to Telstra directly. They currently offer $240 welcome credit on Pixel 4a 5G, $10 off the plan for the first 12 months, and 20,000 plus points. In the past, they didn't do it, but it seems to be okay now. I did it in-store. I got the $10 plan credit, but haven't received the $240 welcome credit yet, so I'm trusting the manager's word.

    • +1

The $240 welcome credit is on the website too so shouldn't be any issue for you to get it applied

      https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-on-a-plan/g…

Credit applied by 2nd bill. Offer ends 25 December 2020.

    • Beware that the concierge people at the Telstra stores normally say Boost/Belong can't get it, so talk to the manager or go to a bigger store.

  • I have just got this plan from JB HI-FI today and planning to cancel my service.

But when I had a chat with Telstra's customer service and they telling me that I have to pay $1140.00 if I terminate it today.

They are saying that I have to pay a termination charge of $1094.

Has someone cancelled any plans, please help me with this.

I understood that there will be a ETC of $594 plus the usage.

    • They are probably wrong, let them know your contract has an early termination value of $594

      • Yes I discussed with them and after chatting for 1 hour they finally agreed

  • They are charging $500 for the voucher as Telstra provides voucher to JB HI-FI for the phone
