    So $598 for ETS?

    • If ETS still works then it would be that plus the $99 upfront fee to jb I'm guessing

      • So it would be:
        $99 upfront
        $598 ETC
$99 for the first month paid up front?

        $800?

        Can someone confirm?

        • I got it on the first deal two months ago. $99 upfront, $594 ETC, that's it if you cancel on the first day.

I paid $149 upfront however I got the phone with the free Galaxy Buds live promotion, sold them for $200.

          • @Techie4066: I'm having trouble cancelling.. they want to charge me $1,100.
            I sent them this:
            https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0024/9803/5810/files/BYO-M…

            Maximum Early
            Termination
            Charges (ETC)
            12 month
            term $594

Do they have to stick to this?

            • @Exprise: Yes they do, it's the ETC plus the pro-rata cost of the plan based on how many days you've used it for. The call centre people can often be wrong, I heard someone got something similar. Are you on the Telstra app?

            • @Exprise: Do you have a contract paper you signed at JB. Apparently, they have updated the t&c in the contract. My friend had the same issue and checked the contract and it say any associated vouchers or gift card should be returned.

        • +2

yes, but if you cancel day one you don't pay etc.
i managed to negotiate a discount down to 400, but then when it came to my bill it was full price, kicked up a stink had all the telstra chat saved, telstra didn't have the records supposedly so luckily I had it all. sent it off to the complaint team, they honoured the deal plus an extra 50 for the hassle.
jb hifi store also honoured the free buds live too when they weren't meant to so got the s20 5g for 350 with free headphones….

          • @Benni85: You're wrong, you DO pay ETC. The ETC is the flat rate charged when cancelling, which is quoted at $594. The extra charge you may pay is the pro-rata fee from the amount of days you used the plan.

And holy crap, if you sold the Buds Live for $200 like I did, you'd have got the S20 for $150!! WTF
It all depends on who you get in the store and on the Telstra chat unfortunately

            • @Techie4066: I meant you pay etc but you don't pay the full month just the day*
I kept headphones they're pretty good quality 🤣

              • @Benni85: I sold and got the Sony WF-1000XM3 instead. Cheaper, but far better quality (especially the case), better sound and better noise cancelling than even AirPods Pro according to reviews. Only downside is microphone call quality which I don't use. They work fantastically with my FE.

Think they changed the ETC charges

        source?

        • Voucher
For new Telstra customers signing up to a mobile plan, you may be eligible to receive a voucher to put towards the purchase of goods from JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys stores. It is not transferable or redeemable for cash (including any unused part). If you cancel, recontract or move to an ineligible plan then you will need to pay a Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee pro-rated against the remaining months on your Plan, the maximum of which is set out in the table above. This is in addition to any Early Termination Charges set out in the above table and accessory payments.

The question is now whether the device is considered as discounted by a voucher.

      • Please let me know.

        I can only find $598….

Could I get the s20 4G for $0 upfront and cancel the contract a week later?

        • +1

          Where are you getting $598? It is usually 12 (remaining month) x $99 / 2 = $594

        • Yes sorry $594

And you would also have to pay 1 month $99 up front right?

          • +1

@Exprise: Upfront is an additional cost on top of the monthly plan if you choose to get the Samsung s20 fe.

            $0 upfront for s20 fe 4g, $99 upfront for s20 fe 5g

I cancelled the same day via telstra live chat. They only mentioned ETC $594 and nothing about the first month. Mind you, I'm still waiting for the bill to come through.

Has anybody bought the phone "recently" and has no screen issues? I'm trying to work out if it's and early hardware issue or an issue with all releases?

    • Great phone did the software update when I first powered on the phone and have had no screen issues whatsoever.

Got the phone from the Amazon cyber sale so pretty recent

    • I bought it a few days ago with the $300 off thing samsung was doing. Been using it for a couple of days and no issues at all.

Try the touch screen app test, videos on youtube

      • +1

Here's the youtube video showing how to test:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpHZsz3RHJY&feature=youtu.be
(Skip to about 3:45 if you don't want to watch the whole thing)

Here's the app to do the test:
        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.rallwell.si…

Important, make sure you set your app to LINE mode, you can not replicate the test in the apps default "point" mode.

        • i tried it with my friends s20+ the result it same with my s20 fe…

        • +3

If I can operate the phone with no issues and it seems to be working perfectly fine I'm not sure why I need to do a test.

          • +2

@enzso: If you're happy with it, that's great. Others are just trying to work out of the touch screen issue has actually been fixed in newer units.

Just because symptoms don't show within your specific usage, that doesn't mean the problem has been solved.

            Thanks

          • +2

@enzso: it's not about you, if the screen shows issues for you and you are okay with it, that's fine, this is more for the others, who are not okay spending $800 for a phone with fundemental flaws or who use them to game for instance where these issues are more pertinent.

    • +2

Bought the phone and updated the software and I’ve been using it for a week now. No signs of ghost touching that im aware of but did the two fingers test using the app and it registers lines teleporting from one side to the other. Dont see how it is practical doing it but maybe for others, it can affect them for gaming

    • Got mine today.

It seems to have come with a screen protector installed. Which I thought was odd.

Noticed no issues while using it but testing came back the same as the video.

Meh I don't game on it and so far it seems to work fine in everything but that test.

    • +1

Bought the phone during black friday sales. Can confirm the issue is still present when using the touchscreen test but it is probably on average once every 100 times. Unless you are intending on doing some heavy gaming/esports stuff you aren't going to notice it for most day to day usages.

    • Most likely still an issue with current stock.

Both myself and my partner bought the 5G FE early November
We did the app test https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.rallwell.si… and it shows the same issue as the Youtube video.

In everyday use, no issues whatsoever. My partner plays some games on his phone and there's no issues with gameplay.

I use my phone regularly (no games though), and no issues either.

      YMMV

  • Harvey Norman has aniyhr offer less data but cheaper monthly cost

    • +1

Do you have a link? Is it with Telstra?

      • HN does Optus so I'd assume with them.

  • Are they still doing the $10 off per month?

  • "Back on a jb but with $99 upfront instead of free."
i thought it was $149 upfront for the 5G or $0 for the 4G ?

    edit:
initially $149 upfront preorder with buds then become free without buds

  • +1

    Hi guys,

I did this deal last time and canceled on the same day. Spoke to the rep who confirmed the ETC of $598… Its been 3 months now and I've not received any bill or the ETC. I've contacted Telstra 4 times (every time they confirmed they can see the cancelation request made on the first day) and asked what's happening. Should this happen?

I don't want to find out I got some secret giant bill.

    • Shhh don't remind them. I also haven't received a bill so total cost so far with buds is $149. Hope it stays that way!

      • +1

ha ok. They can come to me if they want their money I guess. At least I confirmed they know I canceled, so they can't come back and say I owe 3 months of the plan.

        • Who did you port out to that was easy ?

    • I'm the same. Basically scored a free S20 FE and I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Won't be too disappointed if the ETC bill eventually shows up either as its been a great phone to use.

    • Also happened to me. Appears if you cancel through live chat without inserting the Sim card and within 4 hours you are not charged

      • +1

Nice thing but I don't think that is true

        • Just my experience mate, it's definitely not what's supposed to happen and they could come after you for the ETC at a later date if they realise

          • +1

@realfancyman: same experience here, I have had the phone since the original one with $149 upfront and free set of buds, no ETC as yet and I have multiple other bills from telstra each month linked to the same account… cancelled it after leaving JB without even inserting the sim.

fairly sure they will eventually send it out but there is a tiny part of me that is optimistically hoping they don't, could really use a win like that!!

            • @yotto27: How many months has it been for you now without a bill showing up?

Just curious if you've had to contact Telstra (or Support) since the cancellation?

  • Never bought a phone on plan before. How do you cancel on the same day? Do you tell JB on the spot or call up Telstra when you get home?

    • +3

Contact Telstra via phone or app (I did via app), once you get home. Don't mention anything at JB.

      • So, there's a chat feature in the Telstra app or an actual cancel contract menu in the app?

        • Just port out? Shouldn't that cancel it

          • +2

@greatlamp: idk. There's $1k+ on the line. Just want to do it properly.

          • @greatlamp: I did port out last time. I used the app to chat at first, but the lady asked me why are you cancelling the plan? I saw you've just signed up from JB Hifi today…. Please let me know so I can help you out.

I didn't know what to say, so I eventually bought another sim to port out. X_x

            • +1

              @maxia80: You are too sensitive…

            • @maxia80: Haha I had the same and tried to dodge it, and they "really wanted to understand what my issue was" and I eventually said my personal circumstances changed - can't argue with that haha

            • @maxia80: I just told them I changed my mind and want to cancel, no dramas.
Still haven’t received a bill for the ETC

      • I mentioned JB… they're trying to charge me $1,100, what do I do…?

        I sent them this:
        https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0024/9803/5810/files/BYO-M…

        Maximum Early
        Termination
        Charges (ETC)
        12 month
        term $594

Do they have to stick to this?

        • Who's saying $1100? JB or Telstra?

If JB, ignore them. If Telstra, I would ask them to read their t&c

  • -1

C'mon JB why don't you do the same deal as last time where there was no handset fee? It doesn't make sense

  • Almost looked like a flip phone in the thumbnail, thought I was in 2007 for two seconds….

  • +1

Note if you do this deal and find you have screen issues you will not be able to refund or exchange for a different phone.

In practice the screen issues are mostly fixed but its still not perfect

    • Why would you not be able to refund or exchange? JB give you a receipt for warranty purposes even if you got the phone for free like in the last deal. I was told if I have any issues just bring the phone back with the receipt.

They can't exclude you from Australian consumer law on any product they sell.

      • +1

Yep you still have warranty, they will replace the phone or repair it, but they will not refund it or swap it for another phone.

You didn't buy the phone if you use this deal, it's a promotional item, so you do not have the same protections, e.g. refund or swap for a different phone. If you bought the phone with cash, it's a different matter and they will refund/exchange.

        • Can confirm this is true. They will try to repair first.

  • +1

I was able to buy the 5G version over the weekend for $699 at Samsung Westfield Fountain Gate. You can pay for it in instalment for over either 12 or 24 months. You can take this option if you don't want to get tied up with a contract.

  • Looking for a good deal on decent new phone + good data allowance for somewhere in the vicinity of $60 per month ?
Anyone know of any good ones ?
My old 20Gig Pixel 2xl $60 per month contract recently expired. New phone time. Toot toot

    • +2

get outright and then post paid
      contract is bad

      • i used to think that way, but the phones then became too exy that make it worth while. You pay $800-1200 for a phone, then a contract worth $30-$60 ? As opposed to just a contract for $60-$80 ?
It does mean your stuck to the network, which i dont like, but it ends up being cheaper. you do need to get a really great deal to make it worth it though
Pro's and Cons on both sides I guess

        • +1

          Pro's and Cons
your pro as being cheaper is wrong.
the only pro for contract is you can own a phone you cant afford to pay outright - which in my opinion, wrong because if you cant spend $1500 right now for an iphone then dont think of using iphone but get something else

          • @CyberMurning: Fair point, the iphones are overpriced anyway. It worked great back when the pixels were a reasonably priced alternative, now they are as expensive as any of the rest of stuff out there.
Might have to see whats decent in the cheaper price range phones.

            • @millarTime: applies to anything - i am not a fan of instalment/stupid borrow for any reason - except smart borrow ie credit card to get points (but pay in full every time, otherwise it will fall under stupid borrow)
