People shouldn't sleep on the locked Intel chips for budget builds. No overclocking but they're pretty damn fast stock.

    • +1

would you take it over a R5-2600? (which retails for 219 at the same store, and includes a box-cooler)
I'm not in the market for upgrading, but that's got to be a fairly close comparison

      • +1

They're pretty close, can save a little with Intel since it doesn't need fast Ram as badly.

I'd replace either cooler, the bottom level AMD one is pretty crappy as well.

      • +2

its neck and neck with an r5-3600 for gaming, even without oc or fast ram.

        e.g. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i5-10400f/15.h…

      • +7

I would take the i5 10400F for gaming over the R5-2600

      • +3

I would take the 2600, only because that gives me the option of upgrading to a Zen 2/3 CPU. The 2600 is a little worse than the 10400F though.

        • +3

This can also be upgraded to a better 10th Gen or 11th Gen CPU as well though, don't see the benefit of 2600 for that.

          • +2

@Soothsayer: I didn’t think about 11th gen upgrade path. Yeah I guess this 10400F is better value, just make sure you pick your motherboard chipset with your future plans in mind.

      • +1

Absolutely would take this over a R5 2600. This is competitive with the 3600.

Don't think you'll find the 2600 be faster in any use case. For an AMD build around this price you'd wanna look at a 3300X which has 2 less cores.

Only real advantage of the 2600 would be the flexibility of a Ryzen build

        • -1

Plus no need for gfx card.

        • +1

@Ark94 Only if one can find a 3300x. They seem to be rarer than unicorns atm.

      • Hang on, doesn't this fight it out with a Ryzen 5 3600 ?????

    • +2

I would go intel, but their ITX motherboards are way more expensive than b450s.

    • +1

I'm a bit confused on locked Intel chips and their relationships with Z-series motherboards. If I buy a Z-series motherboard, would I be able to overclock it? If not, then what's the purpose of getting a Z-series motherboard? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just couldn't find any clear answer when I tried googling.

      • +2

No, this is locked no matter what you put it on so a Z series is a waste of money unless you need other deluxe features, or want to upgrade in the future.

        • I don't think you're wrong, I'm just confused on why Wikipedia says that it can overclock on a Z490. Is there different types of overclocking or am I getting it confused with something else?

          • +8

@artoria012: For intel 10th gen, you can only overclock if you meet two specific conditions (thanks intel)

            1. You own a Z-series motherboard
            2. You own an "unlocked" processor, which is denoted by a "K" at the end of the SKU.

The lowest tier unlocked processor is the i5-10600K, and the highest is the i9-10900K. No "K", no overclock unfortunately

          • +1

@artoria012: Tim has it covered, Intel hold overclocking hostage for the K / KF chips. So you need the K cpu AND the Z motherboard.

Faster memory speed for a decent performance boost.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhXxCoX0bso

But also for the better VRM on most Z490 boards and future upgrade path to 11th Gen Core.

      • I think you can https://www.pcgamer.com/au/asrock-figured-out-a-way-to-overc…
But from review, it is more than a gimmick thingy

    • People shouldn't sleep on the locked Intel chips

I find they're good in winter

  • +3

Good deal to pair with the 3060ti that no one will be able to buy

    • +3

This with a 1660 Super would hold someone over well til the scalping stops

      • +1

A couple of good deals recently on RX 5600 XT's would also suffice for a budget 1440p build if you don't mind turning some settings down.

        • Yes I just bought one, can't wait. The cheap 5600s seem to be gone for now though so I suggested the 1660s

  • Can't use onboard video card for this CPU.

  • +3

    good RAM for this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/588073
get the cheapest H410/B460 M/B as well

    • That's SODIMM RAM?

      • Theres a deal for both look closely

  • How do these compare to older i7s like a 7700 non k model?

    • Pretty much the exact same CPU but with 2 extra cores.

Not worth the upgrade for sure

  • How much is this better speed wise compared to i7 6700 processor? Any idea?

  • Chhheeeeap!

  • +1

What mobo do I need for this?

    • Any Socket 1200 mobo. The Z490 is top of the line and probably overkill, there are minor differences between the other chipsets.

  • +1

    WOW!!!

  • motherboard costs more

I have an i9-10900F in a Chinese seriously ultra tiny mainboard 1U system - it uses an aviation 4 pin connector to the mainboard which in turn supplies power to the GPU… Current power draw with the restricted CPU is 120-130w max… External PSU is 400w (300w continuous)… I'm running an Zotac RTX 2060 along side it at the moment (180w power draw)…. System is only 232x323x62mm…

I'm tempted with the i5-10400F because power usage is much lower at around 85w which would allow 3070 or 3060 Ti GPU at 200-220w with the PSU….would need to move the CPU to another board.. Wasted too much cash already - curious of others thoughts on CPU vs GPU?….

    • +2

You could try using a program called ThrottleStop that will allow you to limit your CPU clockspeeds, disable turbo, undervolt, etc. And you can always disable cores in the BIOS directly (Or undervolt there) to save extra power. Plus, you could also undervolt your GPU to maintain 90-95% of its original performance while using significantly less power.

    • +1

Unless you could sell the CPU for a good price, just do what the other person said. Looking at benchmarks the 10400F shouldn't save you any power over a non K 10900F as they both have the same power limit.

  • How would this pair with the AsRock B460M-itx? For a 1080p 75hz small gaming machine

    • almost overkill, but more than enough for sure, and at this price, this cpu is a steal, pretty much on par with a ryzen 5 3600 which can handle high end gpus without any serious bottleneck.

    • i have this mobo, but it depends on gpu for fps. This mobo can 100% handle the i5 though

      • Thank you! Now to find stock of the motherboard. Impossible to find until Jan it seems :(

  • How would this compares to 3600?

    • Some benchmarks have this sitting even with the 3600. I have it paired with a 5700xt and it runs games and programs pretty nicely.

  • +1

This CPU is eligible for the Fortnite Splash Squadron Bundle - https://tgahelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052727991-H…

If anyone gets and and isn't interested in the bundle let me know, I would love to get it off you.

So it's a 4930k cpu, took 7 and a half years to reduce to $199, wow amazing intel, call it what you want it's a 4930k

I'd get a amd 3900 definitely worth it.

    • Don't understand this logic, by the same token AMD has only been able to match a 7.5 year old 4930k with 3600 but for $50-$100 more?

    • what

    • +1

call it what you want it's a 4930k

This is a completely different socket, 25+% faster and uses far less power.

    • What a train wreck of a comment

  • How does this compare to an M1?

      Apples and intels

  • Would this be any good for MSFS2020 at 1440p?

    • +1

judging from reviews, people are fine to play at 1440p on ultra but something like a 10600K seems to be the more popular option for MSFS2020

Ordered on Monday, ready to collect on Wed, and just picked up now Thur, Thanks OP.
