Not a bad price consider Amazon does not charge 1% paypal, creadit card, etc fees.
If you can get $650 7950X, I would say 7950X is better; however, most likely 7950X is around $840 (after 1% pyament methods fee).
9950X has better temperature, 10% better code compiling, $110 extra is not bad in long run.

Temping to get 9950X over 9800X3D.
I wasnt exspecting 9800X3D to be over $900 over time

Spend $200 more and you can get the 9950x3d

If you are comparing the two you have to ask if you really need it though? The kind of workloads that can use 12+ cores are generally times that you would walk away from the PC.

Meanwhile you give up the extra cache and the performance that brings. You will likely end up with a slower experience most of the time, just so you can save a few minutes on a video conversion job.

      • "I have no need for it, therefore neither does anyone else!"

      • As a developer, I use it for running docker containers. The prod env has isolated web server, applicaiton server, redis, sql, OpenSearch, Serverless caculation services; my local needs extra build servers for different application, plus parallel testing env.16 core (32 threads) are not as much as you think.
To avoid too much CPU usage, I am currently have to use docker compose run --rm ??? instead of exec to run test cases, which also has a boot up time cost.
Everyday, I need to run individual test cases (one test file a time) 30 ~ 50 times. So, even without parallel testing, just to be able to run docker exec would save me almost 30 mins to 1 hour a day.

        • And for the purpose of this discussion, you would seriously consider giving up 8 cores to gain 3D cache? my point was that someone considering between a 9800x3D and a 9950x probably wouldn't use a 9950x effectively. That isn't you.

          • @greatlamp: Oops I forgot about this thread. I ended up getting 9800X3D from next deal that was posted right after this one.

16 cores would be nice for steaming/gaming etc at same time but I barely do that now days.

    • 9950x, same as 7950x, more towards productivity. If you only use it for gaming, 7800X3D is good enough.
To me, on the other hand, I use it to run docker contains for running parallel unit tests.
My current project has more than 3000 test cases, github server take more than 15 mins to run the test cases, with all the build process it takes more than 18 mins to finish a CI.
If I can run 10 databases with related CPU assign to unit testing containers, I hope it can down to 5 mins in my local. So, it is a huge win for me.
