good phone, not commenting on the company though.

    • +1

Phone's OK but only worth $15o delivered in the current bargain environment.

      Big bargains are coming.

  • Just bought it :)

  • Just be weary of the disclaimer on the page, it will come in an Optus branded box but unlocked. Compatible with all but Telstra's NextG network.

        I reckon he meant 'wary'.

        • But those long disclaimers are also tiring. :)

  • Good price.

Buy an Android phone if you want Android? A phone that natively supports Android will always run better than a Windows Phone hacked to run Android.

      • How difficult is it to hack a Windows Phone for another system? I mean, it is doable at all?

        • I used to have a HTC Touch Pro which ran Windows Mobile 6.1 (but I upgraded it to 6.5). Android got ported to it, but basic functionality (like wifi and Bluetooth) didn't work due to lack of drivers, and there was other issues (calls randomly dropped out, the phone couldn't go into power saving mode, random lockups). This was a year or two ago though, so maybe things have improved since then.

But generally phones are designed specifically for the OS they come with. Get a Windows phone if you want Windows Phone or an Android phone if you want Android.

    Is it an iPhone?

    • +33

Yup. It's an LG iPhone 7.

Why did he get negged for a joke? Ahh well we can't all be funny.

Android is nothing amazing, the marketplace is full of second rate software, ads, and worse! Windows Mobile is a good alternative at this great price

        http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/windows-phone-7-review/

If I didn't have an iPhone with 1+ years left on contract I would very much consider a Windows phone. After all the years of Windows bashing, all the development of Linux from major players, constant updates, but Windows is still king of PC, no competition in gaming, best Office suite without comparison, very stable.

It's funny how people always root for the under dog, even when it's not in their best interests

          || Android is nothing amazing, the marketplace is full of second rate software, ads, and worse! Windows Mobile is a good alternative at this great price ||

Ok so android is full of second rate software, ads and worse. And what's the Windows Marketplace full of? Nothing! It's empty as hell.

          || It's funny how people always root for the under dog, even when it's not in their best interests ||

Isn't that what you're doing? Android is hardly the underdog. LOL.

        • I concur that the WP7 Marketplace does appear to be 'empty', but all the essential apps (that I needed anyway) were present.

      • @Atlas: I was considering a Windows Phone 7 a little while ago. Headed off to the marketplace, and i couldn't find equivalents for over 90% of my apps.

Maybe in another 2 years. Assuming its' market share doesn't keep dropping.

        • Out of curiosity, what apps were you unable to find?

        • just to name a few:
          AndFTP - ftp client
websharing - wirelessly transfer files to computer
remote web desktop - like above but does heaaaps of other stuff
myusage - check all my usage (phone, bigpond, etc).

    • +2

Yep It certainly is: As OP's tagline said "Smartphone!". Ideal for smart people like yourself. "Apple" have decided to slash their prices in response to Coles & Woolies recently slashing their prices on "Bananas".
……Ok, Just taking the mickey :))
Looks like a bargain though. Not a big fan of COTD. Slow as Christmas on their shipping.

  • Awesome price for this phone. Since I'm rocking an IP4 and Galaxy Nexus for the best of both worlds, this might tempt be to dip my toes into the WP7 pond.

    • Recommend trying it - I did and was certainly a worthwhile experience!

    • +1

yep this is really cheap, and has 16gb + dnla too.
been using wp7 for 3 weeks now, bought a used one on ebay for my kid (htc mozart for $170) been playing with it and really liked it a lot (the OS) I decided to give my iphone4 to my kid instead (been an iphone user for more than 2 years). It's really amazing! all the integrations, the live tiles, a different approach to multitasking, smoothness, really slick! most of the popular apps are in the marketplace or there's an equivalent (not all banks though). you should give wp7 a try, you might like it. for me it's really a joy to use

  • How good is the Battery life?

    • Pretty good provided you don't play games as that'll run your phone dead after a few hours no doubt.

  • uniquemobiles will have it on sale next thursday for 2 minutes.

  • how much do you reckon unique mobiles will have it for?

  • Does a Windows phone come with any navigation software?

    • It does come with Bing Maps, but I don't think it's as advanced as Google Navigation. There are third party offline GPS apps - though you obviously have to pay for them.

Not sure about these Optus phones but the Telstra phones include a Garmin app that you can subscribe to for voice turn-by-turn instructions.

    • Just to let you know the maps suck, I live in Perth and today I wanted to get to Dan Murphys in Hyde Park, typed in "dan murpheys hyde park" and it displayed some place in Turkey (the country).

    • there's an app called gMaps (google maps)

  • +7

Remember this only supports UMTS 900/1900/2100 so it won't be Telstra NextG compatible as mentioned above.

However I must say this looks like a genuine bargain, on par with the HTC Mozart deal from WoW a few weeks ago. I managed to score that deal and thought I would also try WP7. I'm really glad I did because WP7 is mightily impressive.

When I read the Engadget review on the CoTD webpage and they mentioned the 'emotional connection' I instantly knew what they were talking about. I had to renew my contract so I'm now using a new SGS2, but I was VERY reluctant to give up the Mozart.

The OS is just so smooth and fluid that it really does make Android look like a second rate hack job, and iOS a dated Macintosh computer from the 90s. And all this on a single core processor that even puts the SGS2 to shame (imo) for responsiveness. The look and feel of the OS and apps is fresh and unique, and actually very functional.

The only negative for me was the lack of tweakability. For example I couldn't figure out how to get my TV episodes on to the phone without sitting there and transcoding one by one. I guess that's why Android appeals to me so much - I can do so much with it. But 90% of the functions are now available under WP7 and I think when the next Nokia WP7 flagship device comes along, I'll be there.

    • Can't agree more. Lumia 800 or something else Nokia is planning for will definitely see Windows Phone OS surge in market share.

I'm sold for Nokia's WP devises as they come with pre-installed turn-by-turn navigation for free (and I think they're also life-long usage).

      • Disclaimer: This is personal speculation and borders on Verge/Whirlpool discussion. Nokia will raise WP7's marketshare to be sure, but 'surge'? Seems too optimistic.

WP7 has almost no brand awareness for laymen unlike the entrenched iPhone and hungry Android. Nokia's practically been MIA in the smartphone scene for years, and can't possibly reclaim everyone who's moved to greener pastures in their absence. Plus their fumbling of the Lumia 800's release outside Europe makes me question their commitment to the platform.

        • Actually if there were more people like my wife, Nokia would have a decent shot with WP7. She doesn't own a smartphone and has been using Nokia feature phone for years. She only wants to buy Nokia.

      • I still see no reason to switch to WP7 OS. I will stay away from Symbian and WP7 for 2 reasons:
        - buying a expensive piece of brick
        - can do nothing, no apps, resell value drop like crazy.

        • +2

its 180, its far from expensive. Besides it does what a phone should do and more. Obviously it doesnt have the breadth and depth of apps. But the bult in twitter and facebook is fairly good. Its browser is decent.

The advantage is its fresh and intitutive ui, it might not be for everyone, its still a very solid os.

        • I gave +vote for the price for this spec of this phone. It may suit others (i.e you play games a lot), but for me, I still prefer Android.

  • +2

Good deal but wish they have NextG version.

    • same, would be a great spare

  • +2

You can try WP in iOS/Android browser - go to http://aka.ms/wpdemo

I remember the days where you couldn't even buy a 16gb USB flash drive for this price. Now I can get a good quality smart phone like this with 16gb. Great deal. I bought mine for $196.00 from mobileciti a couple of days ago. Fantastic phone at this price.

  • I've got this phone and the place I purchased it from (UniqueMobiles) didn't disclose that it'll have problems with the NextG network which I think is a pretty annoying.

You won't be able to purchase things through the marketplace/aps area unless you use a CC.

Great price if you're with Optus though.

  • -2

awesome price for the specs of this phone.. just yeah a pity it's WP7

  • I just do some search and I can't believe it, this WP7 is hopeless, whats the point to buy a smartphone without apps? Buying a phone on mobile platform that doesn't even have some most basic apps like messenger apps, i.e Viber, or Skype or IM+ is like buying a brick. What is the point of high specs phone with no supporting applications?

I don't think that Nokia can get anywhere with their over-priced Lumia with a WP7 ($750+, seriously why should I spend that much instead of a Galaxy S2 or iPhone 4S?)

    • +1

It's part of the "If you build it, they will come" fallacy. If you don't make a great ecosystem, support it heavily or sweeten the deal for converts, no-one will want your devices, and your manufacturing partners will be put off making better devices because they make more money from Android, which further puts off potential consumers.

      • I just checked their marketplace, there is NO apps at all, only some crappy one. This is ridiculous, WP7 has been out for more than a year. Also according to your post, those apps is expected in Fall 2011, and now it is already Winter (US time) and we are already in Dec 2011 still nothing happens.

    • +3

Not every one uses a milion and one apps. On my galaxy tab I use opera, twitter, listen, tunein and thats pretty much it. All these (or alternatives) are available on my mozart.

Its a similar story on my ipod touch, and I am sure there quite a number of people requiring only the basics, and the difference is how the basics are offered. And frankly wp offers the basics pretty well.

  • +1

I've just done some research, and it turns out ppl buy this phone to play games. Games graphic quality is quite good and you can play online on Xbox Live

  • damn everything was looking great then i saw wp7. Is there a way to get android on this?

  • Anyone received theirs yet? Site doesnt even say it is shipped yet for me.

  • Me neither. Ordered on the 1st Dec, status is still not shipped.

  • +1

I did inquired and i have been told that the shipment was delayed and will be here on Friday and from Monday onwards they will start shipping it out.
i have been told that my phone will be here on 14th…
