  A common USB hub with ethernet, plus a video cable really is universal, just one extra plug, and a fraction of the cost.

    It will be just the video part that has compatibility issues. It is not just the OS, but depends on HDMI over USB function in the hardware, no?
    So much easier to separate video from everything else, unless you only have a single USB-C and no video port - but then you probably have a Mac :-)
