I called in OW and they said its not "unlocked" and went on and say this is outright but still locked to Telstra network. I was wtf, hang up and called the 2nd operator and got through, PB @ $711.55!
Yeah they tried really hard to deny it. They tried the unlock route at first but I was firm in telling them no, it's 100% unlocked. Then they tried to tell me you have to be a Telstra customer to purchase and I said no, you can checkout as a guest. I asked for an email address where I could send them a video of myself going through the checkout process if they don't believe me.
Eventually they accepted but they're saying it still needs final approval from management.
Expecting them to match Telstra's price shortly.

Just got denied price-match from JB when I called in. This was probably Highpoint or Maribyrnong store. Saying they phones are locked to Telstra, which I am pretty sure is false.

Yeah I reckon buying it outright should be fine - what are they going to do, charge you at a later date if you cancel? Buying it outright at a point of sale shouldn't be beholden to contract conditions, it's in the name.

I have a month-to-month broadband plan (no post-paid mobile plan) so I'm assuming that's why I'm eligible for repayments.
This only applies to the plans. The $250 is applied over 12 or 24 months when you add the phone to a plan.
If you're buying the phone outright, you get the $250 discount upfront.
I don't get why everyone is trying to price match JB… Officeworks (well maybe this for the pricebeat)… when you can order from telstra.com the outright price, including delivery??

I went through their general support line (1300 number) since all the stores in a 30km radius were either out of stock or were a question mark.

That's right, but for some reason the telstra.com website has been configured (potentially incorrectly) to process outright handset purchase (no plan required) at the $749 price. So the reference here (for people price matching/beating) is not the wording or advertisement of the Telstra deal, but rather the currently configured Telstra online store.

The manager initially refused stating telstra require a plan, I called officeworks online and they said to show him the big "purchase outright" button and click checkout. That convinced him finally and he apologised.

After some serious convincing Officworks Coburg VIC did the price beat for the Pixel 5. They have two black left (at 11:00) if anyone is interested.
While doing the PB they told me there is no stock anywhere for the phone in vic so I asked them to do a click and collect instead of delivery to home. I guess black was avaiable and sorta sage was out of stock.
The guy did mention that they are going to put a pause to the offer just after my order went thru (apparently) I am just hoping they won't back track coz payment has gone thru
Went down to local Officeworks, after a 50 minute debacle of whether it is locked or not, they refused. Called up head office, really nice girl, stated they were looking into it, but could put it through at the moment. All paid for the $711.55. She said at end that it needs manager sign off because of the large discount, but said there would be no issues! So hopefully there isn't… so just waiting for my confirmation emails etc. now.
I asked them how it makes sense to buy a phone OUTRIGHT from a Telco (not on a plan or with a sim), and then it be locked to them? Only situation this would work in is if you are already with the Telco… Asked where the disclaimer is to see that it's locked - and they were clueless. One of the staff actually said that it should be approved, couldn't see why not, but other two were like hounds attacking with no proof. It was as if the PM was going to be taken from their pay…

OW Toowoomba refused. The Telstra website doesn't list a model number, they then phoned the local store who said the purchase had to be tied to a plan/locked to Telstra, despite the option to purchase outright online.

For us who have price matched through Officeworks head office over the phone, and have had the money taken from our accounts, what's the chances of this actually being approved? I haven't received confirmation as of yet, but the money is definitely gone! Think they will come back and pull some excuse and refund?
