  • Hopefully JB offer the same deal and include BTO :)

    • +1

Yeah, well, have to wait till tomorrow and see

    • They'll probably have the same deal, and also exclude BTO.

    • +1

JB Hifi owns The Good Guys so chances are, the 10% will be across the board

      • I wonder if JB might just allow 10% off BTO

        • They’ve never allowed BTO as part of the 10% off so I doubt it.

  • Will be interesting to see how Apple treat this 1st gen device.

    • +1

Put dem on clearance :facepalm ;-)

  • +2

The cost of those SSD upgrades is atrocious

  • The cost of those SSD upgrades is atrocious

    • +1

So is the RAM but they're on the chip now so not upgradeable. Get as much as you can afford now. At least with storage you can go external.

    • +2

The cost of 16Gb Unified of RAM (+300 and no 10% overall discount) is even more atrocious!

  • +1

I got JB to match Education Pricing for BTO but took a bit of negotiation

I haven't committed yet cause I have to go back to the store with my housemate who is the actual student ;)

    • Is the education discount worth it?

      • 11% off

        • Really? Looks like $30 off the mac mini's?

          • @iShibby: Just checked macmini base model is $1042 vs $1099. So for macmini is 5%. Much better to get the coles discount cards and buy from jb (and if you get them to price match unidays even better )

            • +1

@fozzie: Hoping JB will just have 10% off all macs inc BTO

              • +1

@iShibby: That’d amazing. Hoping the same here

            • @fozzie: Where did you see those prices? All I can see is $1069 not $1042?

      • You can see edu prices online, about 10% off then extra goodies at the start of the school year

      • Yes, especially if you want the Pro Apps which you can get for $299

Pro Apps Bundle for Education $299 educational
        - Final Cut Pro
        - Motion 5
        - Compressor 4
        - Logic Pro
        - MainStage

The educational price also applies to B.T.O which is useful b/c I want to buy 16gb of RAM

The 256gb base models don't have enough storage, 512gb is adequate, 1tb or 2tb would be nice but not at the prices apple are charging.

    • Was just in JB and they said they’d match edu store no worries

      • Dumb question but do we need to be a student to get this price match offer at JB?

        • Yes student card

        • Are you asking if you can get student pricing price matched without being a student?

          • @g1: Yes, exactly my question thanks. Sounds like a no from previous reply?

        • No you don't. I was legit buying one for my daughter for Christmas and was wondering how I get a copy of her ID card without her knowing. The salesperson person told me he would pricematch with apple edu without needing to show proof. Now I just need him to price match GG.

          • @ultramic: yep exactly right, you can be a parent, staff or student of a higher education institution to be eligible

      • Wow that’s good to know. Btw I don’t think this offer will include new m1

      • JB is currently offering 10% off RRP macs
Will they also do 10% off educational pricing on macs?

        • I tried but was declined by the in-store manager.

  • Officeworks price beat ?

  • Iphones to?

    • +1

      don't think Macs include iPhones

  • +1

Article reads: “ 10 per cent off Apple Mac Computers”
We can only dream that it includes the brand new releases that are currently flying off the shelves (according to the Apple store rep I spoke to)

    • Yeh it never mentions that it'll include the new M1 MacBooks. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

    • I think you might be right. When you click on the link it says it ends on 1st December so I’m assuming that is on already for the older models. (2019)

  • could you pricematch unidays with officework taking it to 1339.5

  • +3

    Have a read:

In the long run, native apps will be available. However, there is no doubt if you get one now, you are an early adopter and will be essentially doing beta testing. Bootcamp is gone (so you won't be able to run Windows 10 through bootcamp). For developers, Docker is not ready for M1 based CPU yet.

Are many people use Apple apps so heavily and their current Macbook Air / Pro is far too slow?

    • +3

True about Windows 10 but wrong about emulation, these new M1's fly. Non-native apps are about 5x faster than the 2018 models.
Most of the benchmarks you see are actually running in EMULATION mode, yes some Benchmarks have native support but most don't yet.

Don't kid yourself these things fly. I work in IT and use windows, I was testing my Daughters who is in the Apple camp. Bloody hell, I was jelous her Entry Level Air, can crap all over my 4k windows PC.

      • -1

I don't recall mentioning anything about emulation being slow. The issue from that article is stability of apps via emulation. Also, apps that run really well are native apps.

If you use all Apple apps and devices, then M1 probably is going to be fine.

One of the headaches I have with my MBP 13 inch is getting it to do 4K HDR properly. I really don't want to buy an Apple display for that. Apple's first version of the dongle was awful, and the second version of the dongle isn't that pleasant either. And, the touchbar.

Docker is not available yet, which means if I were to get MBA now, I cannot use it for work. Also, on the MBP side, Apple is continuing down this path of cutting more ports. Sure, the CPU performance is much better, but you need to accept whatever else Apple decide for you.

    • Thanks, good to read both sides.

    • Just to add to your point, quite a bit of work yet to be done on the app front. Worth looking at this website to check if the apps you use are working - https://isapplesiliconready.com/

  • Will this include tablets?

    • +1

No. Just desktops. They almost never discount tablets or iPhones.

  • This would be perfect as i was thinking of porting my mobile to telstra. The 10% off plus the gift card makes this a steal

  • Motherf-cker. Just bought an M1 MacBook Pro for $1889 from Costco. Shoulda known better!!

    • Lol. Should be able to return it if you can be bothered.

    • Personally would suggest to skip this deal and buy from Apple with extended change-of-mind return period, try out yourself and see if it is suitable to what you do. If really suitable and found a better deal along the way, you can always return the device to Apple and get that better deal.

  • +2

    Apple will match this price.

  • -1

Will ipads & airpods get the 10% discount this week too?!

  • -2

Best-in-class performance or not, I'm not paying 1400 just to have a fanless machine that can go up in flames when the chip starts getting overworked eventually, and better sync with my phone. And really, why does the Air need to be so powerful?

    • +2

And really, why does the Air need to be so powerful?

Lol speak for yourself, light and powerful laptops are great.

      • Yeah, until they start throttling 10mins into whatever you need all that power for. This one even more so perhaps, give the complete lack of any active cooling

        • +2

Plenty of Intel laptops with thermal throttling already. It's factored into any respectable benchmarks already.

          • @Merlict: That's exactly what I'm talking about. Throttling's been normalised because of "powerful" thin-and-lights that can't hold a sprint long enough to take a decent dump. Plenty of laptops now that come with decent specs and are still portable without having to look like they have anorexia

          • -4

@Merlict: So powerful that it needs a dongle to do 4K, and if you have the wrong Apple dongle, it is limited to 4K 30fps.

The Web cam is so awesome it remains unchanged for years and no touchscreen is so 2020.

That's what I don't get from Apple. Why not completely blow PC laptops out in every aspect? Why continue to choke the I/O if the new CPU is so amazing and powerful?

How about all the security measures to block independent repairers to fix the devices? Block your suppliers from supplying parts to others.

What advantages do those small Apple retailers have nowadays? I used to support them, but with Apple stores and Macbooks being more ubiquitous, larger sellers stock them now. Their buying powers and selling tactics, hard to continue support smaller Apple retailers.

            • +1

              @netsurfer:

So powerful that it needs a dongle to do 4K

I connect my Mac to a 4K monitor w/o a dongle just fine.

              • -1

@sridhar: Because the USB-C monitor essentially has that dongle inside.

  • +2

Never buy apple products from good guys they won’t let you return them in a change of mind better off just getting straight from Apple they offer returns and way better service

    • +2

Sounds like a good reason to buy from them - you won't get somebody's skanky opened one that they fapped over for a week and then changed their mind.

  • +3

As one of the (increasingly) few 100% Apple resellers left doing retail, I always feel sick when I see these deals. There's not even 10% margin in most of these Macs. I don't believe they're loss leading as such, unless their attachment rate on AppleCare+ is super high. I think they're probably on 60 or 90 day terms with Apple product and they need to sell big ticket items at cost (or even a small loss) so that they have cash reserves to fund their Christmas stock.

I like a deal too and I totally understand that people want to save some bucks on a fairly decent chunk of change when buying a computer, but daaaaaaammmn.

    • Damn I haven't even thought about independent Mac shops for many years, all the ones near me are long gone.

Kinda sad but such is life.

      • +4

We do all the repairs in our geographical area, including those for the big box resellers (except Harvey's) which keeps us busy. Plus of course the many customers that would like to have people working on their Macs that know something about them. Or need upgrades.

So we're not going anywhere, but it does suck when people come and talk to us for an hour and we spend that time showing them around MacOS, addressing concerns, talking about migrating from their old Mac or PC, and then at the end they drop the old "can you price match ___" and that just kills us, because we can't. Our margin is tiny and I have to protect it which means losing a sale rather than racing to the bottom like the competitors do.

  • Is anyone having issues with Apple Pay on the M1 MBA?

I've tried it on two different websites (Apple.com.au and Bellroy) and they've both refused the Apple Pay payment, saying "payment not processed" after Touch ID verified my fingerprint.

Have removed the card and added it back in and still refused.

  • -2

I’ll wait for next gen M2 chip laptops

    • +2

Why not wait for the M3 or M4 they will be even faster…..

And while your at it go for the Tesla Model 7

      • -2

Because M1 is the first gen Apple silicon based laptops. By the time M2 arrives, Microsoft and Adobe would have already released their native apps (and most likely others).

Also, it will be interesting to see whether Apple's reduction for USB-C ports on Macbook Pro 13 inch is going to last a few years or Apple will add at least 2 more ports back. Furthermore, the WiFi chip - honestly, it is good enough to compete with intel AX200 now, but since intel has now released WiFi 6E chipset, I reckon Apple will follow. Honestly, WiFi 6 (without E) doesn't feel like proper next iteration of WiFi.

It's not like we are able to travel overseas a lot in the next 12 months so what's rush?

CPU might be 2020 and fantastic, but the rest still feels 2019.

        • +3

Just thought I'd clarify (so other people don't take your comment the wrong way) that all Office365 apps run seamlessly and super fast on the M1 except for MS Teams which you need to run the web version of at this point.

There are apparently a few minor issues with Rosetta 2 version of Photoshop (I don't use it) and it runs very fast, but the Beta version of the native app is apparently even faster, though is missing a number of features.

I do agree that having more USB-C ports would be good (I haven't needed them so far but might, and I'd prefer to be able to charge from either side) and I didn't know that WIFI 6 was already old-news, so thanks for sharing that as it is something that people might want to consider.

          • @tolchok: This is mostly for people who just neg me without providing any reason.

While most apps run fine under Rosetta 2, we DO want native version of those soon (because they will run faster). However, clearly Apple is holding some things back:

            • WiFi 6E + Bluetooth 5.2: Apple does have the opportunity to put them in now. I get why Apple didn't. Thing is, if you know what WiFi 6E is about, you would want that I reckon.
            • The I/O port reduction on MBP. I reckon and I hope Apple is holding back for next year's model.
            • That Webcam, seriously Apple.

Unless you use Final Cut a lot, do you really need a M1 Macbook Pro now? Right now, there are apps that I need on Mac which currently do not run on M1 based MBP/MBA yet (being worked on). I need them for work. By the time M2 is out, that should be resolved. I still need to use my current work supplied Macbook Pro to run those apps. There is just no way around it yet.

Sure, a lot of you can just switch to M1 based Macbook Air/Pro. However, do bear in mind that there are people who will need to re-do / re-compile their apps and we are not ready to do the full switch yet. Hopefully, within a year, the transition will be completed.

            • @netsurfer: Yep, I totally understand and I think we are on the same page - if the laptop doesn't run apps/programs you or any other potential purchaser needs, then you/they definitely should not buy one of these (or at least until they do run said app/program).

I just wanted to make sure nobody mistook your comment to mean that Office365 didn't run on the machine (which it does and it does well), or that things like Photoshop don't run (which it does with some minor caveats for the moment).

I did look into WIFI 6E after your post and it looks amazing. Do you have any laptops that use it at the moment you think are better than the new MbA/MbP? Also, do you have any recommended WIFI 6E routers? I was having trouble finding info/reviews and am likely to take advantage of Apple's 'return by 8 January for full refund' (I bought mine directly) if I find a laptop which is more tempting.

PS. I upvoted you because I think your points are valid.

    • Ok

  • Just a question, if jbhifi or tgg is cheaper than Apple store, does Apple store do price match?

    • would like to know too.

    • +1

Apple stores do price match but you can utilise 15% discounted gift cards from Coles this Wed then head into JB stores (they also own TGG so you can always expect same price/price match easily), which would give you the biggest discount

  • no dice

    • +1

It is in their catalogue and not excluded. Prices for their Black Friday sale haven't updated online yet. Will reflect online later today.

  • Prices have been updated on website to reflect 10% discount.

    • thanks for the update. Early 2020 Base Model Intel MacBooks also get the 10% off in addition to its already discounted price

      • How much was the Early 2020 base Macbook Air discounted? Around $50-60 or more?

        • 10% off. Around $140+ discount depending on model

  • Shopback should give an additional 3.5% aaaay?

  • Currently running old versions of Adobe creative suite and Microsoft Office - sure anyone know if there would be problems running these on an M1 air?

    • +1

Old as in not on a subscription? Probably not worth it unless you want to move to the newer native versions down the line.

MS Office has no problems. Only issue I've had is OneDrive app doesn't sync. Can still access OneDrive files from within the office apps though.

      • Good to know, thank you!

  • Just got the 5% price beat from OW chadstone for the MBP 512GB space grey.
Price is still $2297 on OW so you may need get in quick before they update it.

  • Just tried to price match with HN online and they consider 10% off as "Products with pricing set significantly lower than the recommended retail price or market value." and therefore, won't pricematch.

  • should we stock up 15% discounted gift cards from this Wed at Coles then ask JB for price match? would be over 20% discount :)))

    • Would need to get 17-21 gift cards… has anyone tried using that many at once?

  • +1

Price beat via call to Officeworks, sending stock from Syndey, 512 M1 Air
    Success, Thank you

  • Just price beat with Officeworks over the phone for two MacBook Airs M1 512GB 8GB.

They had to add the $8 delivery fee for TGG onto the first MacBook.

Total cost = $3340.2, so $1670.1 per MBA, close to $280 off RRP. Can't beat that.
