Fwiw I got the new M1 MBA base model and it flies. Amazing computer. Highly recommended.

    • Did you bother with AppleCare or how does that compare to GG Ceoncierge or JB Extended Warranty?

      • +1

I didn’t. ACL covers things for two years and I usually sell and upgrade within that time.

      • if you want extended warranty. nothing comes close to applecare

  • +2

Do they have the M1 in the 16gb ram version?

    • +8

Pretty sure that 16Gb is a BTO (build to order)

      • Doubt it. I ordered the 16GB 8 Core Air from Apple on launch day and it only arrived today :)

        • +3

Just to clarify I mean that I doubt The Good Guys won't have the 16GB in stock as it is BTO. I replied to the wrong comment.

    • +2

I believe the M1 16gb is a custom config order, which can only be purchased through apple at the moment

      • How do I know if I really need the 16gb ram?
Im slightly dumb when it comes to that part of it.

        • +1

8gb is more than fine for anything not intensive

        • +2

The M1 macs handle RAM differently. Not needing as much to be fast. At the moment these will probably fly with just 8gb of RAM but it's always worth future proofing yourself with 16gb. Now is it worth the extra $300, that's up to you.

          • @iShibby: Ok thanks. If Apple price match the 10% ill get the 16gb but I doubt they will because thats a BTO.

            • @iNeed2Pee: I was hoping JB would price match BTO. Then I can get 10% off and a further 15% using the gift cards. 25% would be lovely jubbly!

              • @iShibby: But JB HI FI dont sell the 16gb ram? Or can you BTO at Jb?

                • @iNeed2Pee: I think you can BTO at JB but not too sure how it works. For 25% I would be tempted to just stick with 8gb lol

                  • @iShibby: 🤣 Yeah I know right. Lets see what actually happens!

              • @iShibby: Hey, how do you get the 25% off ?

                • +2

@ozshopp3r: If you can get JB to price match this then that's 10% off. Then you follow this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/582451?page=1# to get 15% off gift cards to pay for it. 25% in total.

                  • +1

@iShibby: Wow super! I’m thinking of getting the 12 pro anyways. If the MacBook is price matched at Jb I’ll probably get the MacBook Air base model too!

                  • @iShibby: Which gift cards allow you to use it at JB? I don't wanna buy a stack of gift cards and then get them refused lol

                  • +1

@iShibby: Hey how do you get the coles JB GC applied on tomorrow deal? Coles offer starts from 25th and TCG deal is only on tomorrow?

                    • @SomeoneFromSomewhere: Is this deal only tomorrow? Not “from” tomorrow.

                      • +1

@iShibby: My bad, yes it is.. From Tuesday November 24, the technology and electronics retailer is offering a slew of big deals. Standouts include the Dyson V7 Motorhead Cordless Vacuum at $379 (down from $599 - a saving of $220), you can score 15 per cent off Weber BBQs, 10 per cent off Apple Mac Computers and the Haier 7kg Front Load Washer is $399 (down from $549 - a saving of $150). Offers end December 1.

                  • @iShibby: Is there a limit to how many gift cards JB will process in a single transaction?

                    • @mrctan: I hope not! Reading other comments on here I don’t think so

                • +1

@ozshopp3r: I think its the deal of 10% off at The good guys + 15% off from buying GC from Coles

          • @iShibby: Not if you actually do some development work on it. I really doubt memory hungry apps will magically reduce memory footprint by 100%. Also, with those extra CPU power, ideally, developers would like to run more docker containers etc…

8GB… nah.. if moving to M1 means reducing RAM, and reducing ports… it just doesn't feel that great.

            • @netsurfer: Oh I def want 16gb but unless there is 10% BTO I'm out of luck :(

              • @iShibby: Well, I don't believe docker is available for Mac with M1 yet. It is being worked on, docker isn't something you can just use Rosetta 2. VM / hypervisor is more complicated. Probably also need more docker images for Arm.

            • @netsurfer: I had a 2015 MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM and doing development work on it was a dog.

          • @iShibby: parallels virtual machines

        • I watched a YouTube uploads by Created Labs who addressed the issue. I don’t know your use case so will leave it at that.

          • @Icecold5000: I haven't had a laptop for a while. Ive been using an Ipad. My laptop use won't be too intense with maybe some photo editing and watching streaming shows.

Im going to assume the 8gb will be fine based on the above?

            • +1

@iNeed2Pee: 8gb will be more than enough for you then.

            • +1

@iNeed2Pee: From what the reviews have said even editing 4K video is doable with the base MBA 8gb. You have a 14 day ri*t of return if you buy it from the Apple store as well.

              • @Icecold5000: Yeah I wasn't too sure if I go down the JB road and use my gift card or go through Apple and use my education discount to maybe even get the 16ram. Money ain't the issue I guess which is why I wasnt sure what to get.

              • +1

@Icecold5000: The Apple return period is extended until Jan 8 for the holidays so even a longer time to test it out.

                https://www.apple.com/au/shop/help/returns_refund

      • For reference, I asked in-store at JB and they said we can place an order on BTO items with a 4-6 week wait

    • Yep.

    • If you want the 10% off TGG and JB normally have, you'll have to be content with 8GB RAM as 16GB is BTO

  • I'm in the same boat. Can I price match at JB with BTO and use the JB gift card deal?

    • +1

      Probably not.

    • +1

i tried to get the BTO when JB is offering 10% off apple. They don't give discount. I think you can get 15% off if you get the gift cards from Coles and that's about it.

      • +1

No good for me then. I want the 16gb RAM

  • aw okay. I have an iPad Pro 2018 12.9….not sure whether this is a good upgrade

    • +10

      Entirely different devices

    • -5

Depends, you prefer a touchscreen Mac or a non-touch screen iPad with keyboard and trackpad?

  • +2

Just trying something new. Never had a MacBook previously

    • try the new air, it has a really good performance. But app compatibility can be an issue (will be fixed as time goes on).

    • +1

Just wait for more balanced reviews, especially if you used to using Windows. Unfortunately a lot of current reviews lack in depth analysis. There are compatibility issues still to be worked out. Once they are ironed out it may be worth jumping on board.

      https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhead/2020/11/21/appl…

      • +1

Most of the first reviews out suggest that there are next to no compatibility issues. Apps that run on the apple M1 natively are super, crazy fast, and all other apps just invisibly run on emulation, and work fine, very fast, just not super, crazy fast.

        • +2

Please refer to the below list as a base for applications which so far have issues with the M1. It will be reduced out over time, just like it did with the PowerPC transition I experienced. Unfortunately lots people in this forum saying "it just works" with no evidence to back up their claims.

          https://isapplesiliconready.com/

          • @shellshocked: Great list, thanks. I'll have to refer people to that website when they ask if an App/Program they use is working already.

  • +1

Thanks, I’ve seen great reviews with the new MacBook. Tempting lol

  • If they do drop the price on the M1s, I imagine TGG will follow pretty quickly so you better be ready to ring them as soon as they open for the Price Beat!

    • +1

      You mean Officeworks?

      • eek yes - sorry! I caught them out on the day of a JB sale before by ringing first thing before they'd a chance to adjust their prices!

    • -3

Presumably there will be a refreshed both in the next six months, with this model dropping in price marginally

      • Lol 0% chance

      • 100% Apple will release an updated and new design higher-tier model (Air and Pro) rather than refresh the base models to convince ppl to spend more (Apple sales tactic).

I'm going to wait another 1-2 years until it trickles down to the base model. Also not a big fan of 1st gen products.

  • How about new mac mini, does it have discount?

    • +3

Yep but looks like only the 8gb RAM version.

  • +1

10% off with TGG 5% off gift card + cash back makes it a good deal.

For MBA, M1 with 8GB should work for most, unless you need to run memory intensive apps/programs. Overall it's amazing how this Intel to Apple Silicon transition turned out to be (so far).

    • Why's that? If we have external storage why do we need 512?

      • Depends what software you need…

      • +1

Just keep in mind these only have 2 thunderbolt ports so not needing more external devices would save you a dongle or two .. :)

        • 512 is not enough to store things on though I don't think. I'm just thinking how much space do I need to work with before exporting to a larger drive. I do a bit of video editing.

          • +1

@iShibby: Unfortunately there are no upgrade paths for these everything is on the board … I would say that for these you are better off paying the extra now for the Ram and storage just to cover yourself a bit longer. Maybe next versions they’ll have a few more thunder bolt ports.😊

Not that helps RAM wise loll

          • @iShibby: Buy a Thunderbolt Samsung X3 external

      • +1

Maybe getting a Thunderbolt 3/4 hub which support 40GB/s
then use one of the Type-c port in the hub to connect to NVMe SSD drive (10GB/s)

That may comes to the close performance on external drive compare to standard M2 slot
However, pretty sure that internal storage for Apple Silicon will still be faster given its SoC with minimal resistance

      • +2

because when they roll out the os updates you will find yourself running out of storage pretty soon. And like with IP, 16gb is now insufficient, for computer apps are heavier so I think 256gb would make the machine harder to maintain down the track. With apple devices, usually you expect to use abit longer maybe 3 4 years, and by then everything would be too heavy/large for the machine.

    • Wow, look at all those downvotes… Well, don't say I didn't warn you.

      • Because you can't paint all users with the same brush. Many people work exclusively with cloud storage these days, plus with external storage being so cheap, for some people the 256gb model will be fine.

        • Well if it sits there barely used other than a bit of email and web surfing you might be ok, but almost anyone who buys 256GB will regret it.

    • I agree, 256 is consumption device level these days, but with no touch screen it isn't a great consumption device.

  • -3

Just a heads up for those who get one of these.
I’m sure it will prompt you to upgrade to Big Sur OS… (your exiting mac will prob prompt you to update as well) don’t do it yet if you are running things like printers, most manufacturers haven’t updated their drivers etc yet. For example I use a brother machine and can no longer use it as the driver won’t work with Big Sur… spent all of yesterday downgrading back to Catalina waiting for my time capsule to bring my old data back on it. Ehhh

    • +7

I figure these come with Big Sur out of the box

      • Yeah the M1's would surely?

        • +5

The M1's would surly…. I'll see myself out

      • +3

Yes comes with Big Sur because M1 can't run Catalina (Doesn’t have Rosetta 2 or Universal binary)

      • +1

        Have one. It does.

    • Sheesh peeps.. all the negs on some useful advice…!

      • Don't worry, lot's of people here with fragile egos. Looks they need to press the neg button to fell better, even when it's helpful.

        • Best to just let folks work it out for themselves I suppose! I'll keep quite next time!

      • +1

I gave you an upvote because it is useful advice for people on older Macs, but I think the downvotes were because the advice doesn't make sense for these M1 Macs that come with it pre-installed and I believe cannot run on earlier OSs.

I wouldn't suggest upgrading to Big Sur on non-M1 MacBooks unless you have a TimeMachine backup and time to spare, as a number of people were posting on Reddit about problems. I personally had significant issue on my 2015 Air with Big Sur Beta, so rolled back to Catalina.

Big Sur runs super smooth on MacBook Pro M1 though. I will keep an eye out for driver issues - though I fortunately havent run into any so far.

    • +1

All M1 MacBooks come with Big Sur preinstalled.

    • +1

I assume your experience was with an Intel based one.
Anyway, just tried to scan using Brother MFC and print it back - no issues from Big Sur.
Your milage may vary depending on a device used though.

  • I’m undecided between MBA and MBP. Lots of reviewers prefer the MBA at the moment because of the physical function keys versus MBP which is the Touch Bar only. They said performance wise for most cases there’s zero other difference.

Personally I’d go the 16GB and recommend 1TB drive. The reason being on my current MBP I often use 1/2TB and it just has photos, mail, and documents on it. Photos over the years take a lot of space these days and you probably don’t want to put the library directly on external storage (there’s a tiny risk of data loss).

    • +1

That's right, unfortunately internal SSD storage costs are very high, especially with Apple. I'm approaching it with having "enough" space to work on whatever I'm working on (video editing) and then export to more affordable external storage.

      • +1

The other reason I prefer it locally is because then you can utilise Time Machine for the backups. Once it's on external storage I'm not sure if that can be included.

        • +1

I think you can include external drives with Time Machine

          • +2

@iShibby: Yeah you can back up any drives connected to your mac

    • +2

Go the Air. I’ve just received mine and am upgrading from a high spec 15” 2018 Pro. The touch bar sucks that much.

    • +1

I’m undecided between MBA and MBP. Lots of reviewers prefer the MBA at the moment because of the physical function keys versus MBP which is the Touch Bar only. They said performance wise for most cases there’s zero other difference.

The MBA is definitely an amazing price point for what is achieves with a fanless design. There is going to be some thermal throttling at some point with constant use given the fanless/passive cooling solution employed.

The main differences seen in the reviews I've watched (I've personally bought the 8gb 512gb Pro a few days ago):
      * Slightest performance improvement on the Pro (possibly due to ever so slightly higher clock frequency and heat dissipation with the active cooling solution, pretty negligible though)
      * Slightly cooler surface temperatures with prolonged use (due to the above again but it's pretty negligible)
      * Better GPU/Gaming performance. The Pro has 8 cores instead of 7 cores with the Air GPU and again probably has more room with heat dissipation. There was some reasonable differences here for casual gaming and framerates, but nothing huge
      * Slightly brighter screen on the Pro. 500 nits compared to 400 on the Air. Honestly couldn't see it being that much of a difference unless you were using it out in sunlight

It really depends on your use case. If you don't plan to game on it (I'm only really casually gaming on it) then the Macbook Air is at an amazing price point compared to previous models and what it's capable of. In many aspects, both compete with the previous Macbook Pro 16" model that is almost double the price.

      • +3

For whatever odd reason you actually get the 8 core GPU when you upgrade to the 512 storage on the Air!

        • Right, I didn't notice that. There'd be very little difference between the models.

Personally I'd prefer knowing that there's active cooling and not having to worry about all of the heat trapped in the chassis. Battery life is aparently slightly better on the Pro as well
