  • Would screen be bright enough for day to day work?

  • +10

Terrible screen, not sure it is worth it. I'd rather get a slower laptop with a better screen

    • yes. terrible screen

      • do you know what nits is the dell vostro 5490? I just want to compare

    • Yeah, shame about the screen.

    • Can you explain what is so bad about the screen? I thought 1920x1080 resolution is standard?

      • It's not just about resolution, image quality also depends on panel type, brightness, contrast and colour accuracy. Not too important if you are only viewing office apps and web browsing, but if you like photo editing or better gaming graphics, you'll want better screen than this.

Does the "USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 1" port able to use for those type-c docking?

Are there any Ryzen based thinkpads with discrete graphics? Lenovo's site is useless.

I bought this one the other day: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/579546

Out of stock now unfortunately, but they do come up. I originally bought the machine in this deal, but cancelled and went to the eBay one, suits my needs a bit better (graphics especially) and appears to ship quicker.

      • Thanks but that's an ideapad. I prefer thinkpads for their build quality and keyboards. I read up extensively on that machine and there are a number of shortcomings where Lenovo have tried to skimp to save money.

      • FAAAAAAAAAK
I wanted that one, tried with 4 different cards to no avail. "Your payment didn't go through. Please check the card info and billing address or select a different payment option."
From what i read I wasnt the only one with that issue… someone said that is paypal strong arming everyone to create a paypal account as ebay watch silently…
Lets hope a similar deal come through on friday… even better if its not on ebay!

Anyway, congrats to you mate, enjoy

Yep - even arrived today already! Hoolie doolie, that does heaps for me!

DO NOT BUY THR 250 NITS SCREEN!!

I made the mistake of cheaping out on the screen for my ThinkPad T480, it's a 250 not panel and it is absolutely garbage. Save your eyes, and buy a laptop with a better screen.

    • +2

      I concur

    • Is 300 nits okay or 300+?

      • 300 is good

      • My laptop (XPS 17) has 504 nits, my tablet (surface pro 5) 408. 250 is so low…….

  • +15

I will chime in again, I do this on every E14/E15 post but:

the screen is rubbish. dim, low contrast, 45% NTSC colors are washed out. I have that same panel in work Lenovo laptop and it sucks so bad

Lenovo is playing it dirty by reserving good panels for expensive models only. There's no reason to have these rubbish "IPS" panels around, they cost exactly the same to make as good no-flicker 300nit 72% NTSC panels that should be a standard.

but no, they exist for one purpose only: to make otherwise fine and serviceable laptops feel cheap.

    shame, shame, shame.

    Absolutely agreed 100%.

Please don't buy this sort of low quality screen from Lenovo. It's the worse in 20+ year.

There are already so many victims who have been learning their lesson through buying low quality screen from Lenovo. I am sure you don't want to be the next one.

Don't get me wrong, it's nothing wrong with the notebook. It's just the brightness of the screen. They are keep saying it's 250nits but who knows ? We have no proof that it's lower than 250nits and if it was then it's definitely the low quality 250nits because it's not really usable.

It will make your eyes extremely tired to situation you just don't enjoy looking at it.

Save your money to something better or if you have to buy Lenovo, then pay a bit more for a better screen and hopefully it's better.

No wonder the rrp was over $2000+ and we are paying less than $1000. It must be something wrong. Good luck guys!

Remember! Don't be the next victim by buying this low quality screen from Lenovo!

    • The reviews and youtube videos does not seem to be bad at all

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqa2PNF4TZo&t=330s

      • I believe you are viewing it from a good PC, notebook or a mobile.

Try this, turn the "Auto brightness on" on your mobile and that's probably the max brightness of the screen. It's bloody terrible and disgraceful from Lenovo to offer this type of quality to their royal customers.

Three words - Don't buy please!

      • +5

I have a E14 as do most of our work fleet. The screen is not that bad at all. Everyone on OZB seems to make the issue worse than it is.
For a standard office environment the screen is more than sufficient. Perfectly fine for web browsing and office work.

        • +2

Yep what an over exageration. 250 nits is fine for most usage cases. How often do you use your laptop outside in the blazing sun anyway? Its a good deal and a great basic laptop for someone who wants to work on the go.

    • Most reviews I've seen list the panel as a BOE panel getting 280nits avg. Not that you're guaranteed to get that, they can and do vary, but the main panel known to be put in these is tested by independent reviewers at around 280nits avg. It's entirely possible they moved away from that panel after initial batches and just use whatever they have at the time.

If you own one, posting the panel model you have would be useful. Just saying the display is bad or good is less useful without knowing what panel you have and when you bought it.

Not that I disagree with your base argument that it's frustrating these low quality panels are in use, it's just that it is helpful for people to know exactly what to expect rather than just advising people not buy it as every manufacturer is doing the same thing with the lower cost models and it's not feasible for everyone to just buy the premium models for the good panels like they want us to, or just not buy them. I know I personally held out buying until Renoir and I'm sure there are others that can't just wait another year. That said, I have the lesser 220nits tested ChiMei panel in my Flex 5 14 and it's still usable - it's definitely not so bad that I would be better off not buying it and it's not so bad for me to spend $500 more on an equivalent 2-in-1 with better panel. Though in this case, with the IdeaPad S540 coming in at a similar price through edu store for example, there's more option with a decent panel in the price range in the normal form factor.

  • Are there aftermarket screens available for upgrading this laptop?

    • Why not aftermarket laptop while you're at it

  • To solve this problem folks,

I have to buy a Dell IPS monitor as a second screen! But I shouldn't have to if I brought a Dell instead.

    • why not just return the lenovo laptop and get a dell laptop instead?

      • they won't process return…

        • why not?

          • @Homr: they won't process return… general process is to get tech support over phone and spend 1 to 2 hrs while they take remote access. If that does not resolve issue, you need to take laptop to their service center.

technically you will be out of machine for a week or two. can't justify efforts when one knows that screen has issues from usability point of view.

            • @vr4indian: Don't they have a change of mind return policy like Dell?

              • @Homr: Time is more critical then money in many instances. Once you get new machine, you need to spend time in setting up all profiles , cloud connections , synch data.

In busy world, this may take few weeks and opportunity cost outweigh chasing return / change of mind etc. When you know it has issue, no need to buy to start with.. as simple as that.

                • @vr4indian: Yeh true I agree with setting up a new machine with profiles etc takes alot of time.

That's why I decided to keep my dell vostro 5490 even though I wasn't 100% happy with it.

  • good for those always use a big monitor.

  • +6

I'm sure this is nit picking:)

I have the Lenovo Ideapad gaming from the previous deal - with the same 250nits screen - and it's plenty bright for my needs - which i will admit has been mostly indoors. Are people using this on the beach?

  • +2

Personally I think the screen is nice, depends what you are used too. It is a sub $1000 laptop, so not everything will be perfect. I found it more than fine for an everyday user.

If you needed 100% accurate true colours, you probably wouldn't be using a laptop anyway…

  • Can this be used with the Amex deal if I were to add a few items (other peripherals, warranty etc) to bring it up to the min spend?

FYI - Amex deal is sped $1199, get $180 back.

    • From experience from PMs I have received from members surrounding the Lenovo Education deal, I believe you will need to contact Lenovo to charge your Amex instantly as they generally charge when the item is due to the shipped instead of instantly. As the Amex deal expires prior to 4-5 weeks away, you will need to get them to charge it manually.

      • Good point. However, I wonder if the Amex condition is really about "shipped" or "charged". If it is the later, then having Lenovo charge the card manually would not satisfy the condition for the rebate?

    • I looked at that too but there's a condition that the item has to be shipped by the start of December. Sounds like that won't be the case, but maybe if you call them.

      • +1

I think, You can cancel the order if don't get cashback from amex. I am in same boat.

  • +1

when they provide a soldered 16gb + spare I will get one (or non soldered slots). is support for 32gb+ too much to ask in 2020!?

    • Yeah I won't buy a machine with soldered RAM or SSD or anything likely to fail within 5 years

  • Shipment end of Mar 2021… Good lord. Is it easy to cancel order?

    • That's ridiculous..
I just wouldn't bother buying anything with more than a 2 week lead time. Any longer than that and its likely a better sale will come up. This sort of tech advances so quickly and Lenovo have sales every other day…

    • Their shipment times are insane. Placed an order back in September to be told it'll ship next May. Cancelled.
