      15.6" FHD (1920x1080) IPS 250nits Anti-glare, 120Hz

  • Good for video editing? Like 4k?

    • +6

      Amateur? It's fine.
It's got enough grunt to crush some work.
Display not suitable for colour accuracy.

      • I'm using a 1050 and rendering would result in error sometimes.

I was thinking of getting a desktop (the one techfast had in october) but that still required a monitor, etc etc.

        • +2

You'd also a monitor for this model.

    • Won't be good in a bright room or outdoors due to the low brightness.

    • +3

not on this screen, if it's a 250nits IPS, it's likely one with 45%NTSC

    • Do you happen to know if thye Are soldered?
Might have to upgrade ram in the future and was wondering that…

  • +1

Argh. Been holding out for so long on a good deal, this was $16 more on EDu store last week. I feel like if I pull the trigger on this one, a better deal will come up the following days :S

    • +15

Its like, I'll get my car out of my garage when all the signals in the world are green, never gonna happen mate!!

      • +1

        Good analogy mate.

      • +1

What if I live in the country and we have no traffic lights….? 😜

        • Yet we are still talking about the world!

        • +1

You have cows to worry about…

    • I think of it as your waiting time and current needs are worth money too.
If you can afford to wait till the next best deals, then by all means why not.
But if you cannot afford to wait and you really want it and its the 2nd best deal, then I think it's ok?

    • +1

Yeah, you might save $50 if you're super lucky, but is it worth the wait?

    • +2

Yeah I wouldn't pull the trigger yet.

I have a sweet Core2Duo laptop with 1GB RAM and a 250GB HDD that is an absolute bargain. Only had to wait 10 years for it to come down to less than $100. This one will do the same, mark my words.

  • Any idea what the dispatch time on one from eBay would be?

    • I was wondering the same thing. Some Lenovo orders want 5 weeks which is nuts.

      • I just ordered one last night, but if this is in stock and local(ish), I might see if I can reverse it

    • Ebay don't dispatch it.

      • +2

I was more thinking that their eBay stock is produced and ready to go

    • I got mine from a deal a few months ago when it was launched in aus and the wait was 3 weeks. dunno if stock levels have improved since though

    • Answering my own question - dispatched one day after ordering, much better than their online store which was 4-5 weeks

  • +1

I have the last years model of this and it happily plays Witcher 3 at 1080.

Tempted to get this as an upgrade.

  • Wow, not a bad price at all!

  • so tempting….
to wait for black friday and/or cyber Monday sales or not?

  • +3

I can't find the more details specs from "news" but if it's yhe same 250nit 120hz panel that goes into 3i gaming, it's got 45% NTSC color reproduction which is rather unimpressive

    • Ooof, dim and dull. With those specs this IPS panel is around the same level as low end TN panels. Also like my old laptop it probably has an unadvertised response time that can't even keep up with 60hz gaming, yet they slap on a 100hz+ badge on it while everything smears all over the place.

For those who like tinkering though an LCD upgrade isn't hard at all, and with the very low quality screen here I'd think those who can do it really should.

      • +1

I know, I did many panel upgrades, but lost interest after a lot of models started to come with panels glued to the lid

probably manufacturers caught up to the replacement trend

I got a Dell with 1650 and decent 300nit 72% NTSC panel earlier for $900. added a 97wh battery for $90. no regrets looking back. although that panel is 60hz. good enough for me

        • How is the build quality of Dell? Many claim they are kind of cheap build quality

          • @utsc: depends on what you go with. I got an Inspiron 7590 and it's a well built machine. magnesium alloy body, great backlit keyboard, slim and light for a 15 inch machine (with original 56wh battery the damn thing was just 1.6kg), no palm rest flex, the body is sturdy, can be picked up holding one corner with no flex, resistant to twisting which is impressive for a 15 inch slim machine.

if you go with something like G3 gaming, they are cheap heavy plastic build. G5 is a bit better. Inspiron and Vostro 5000 and 7000 in general are built well, but if you put Lenovo E14 or E15 I would say Lenovo is a bit more robust than Inspiron 5000 / 7000, despite less premium materials used.

which is why I am mad at Lenovo for crippling good, well built laptops by installing outright crappy screens. so sneaky!

where Dell really shines is their Latitude laptop lineup. Everything there, from class 3000 all the way to recently established class 9000 are well built and robust, after all this is their business grade lineup. some people would prefer Lenovo, but Dell Latitude is built solid.

          • @utsc: My Dell Latitude 5490 for work cops an absolute hammering and hasn't missed a beat in 3 years.

            • @wombat81: that generation is absolutely legendary if a bit outdated nowadays

              5490, 5590, 5591, 7490, 3490 really set the standard

  • i think with gaming laptops they should give atleast 65Wh battery

    • +1

yes. this (45wh battery) and a lousy screen pretty much prevented me from buying one last time it was on special

  • I just wish it had a bigger battery. The Legion 5 comes with a 60 or 80Wh battery…

    • -1

yeah battery on this is tiny. Just only using Chome, the battery would be lucky to see 2hrs+

      • Only last 2 hours of just browsing? I struggle to believe this.

      • I highly doubt that.

  • +1

Can anyone find this on the Lenovo website? I want to see if they will match the ebay price so I can use the amex offer.

    • I think its this one

      • Thanks, they won't match it :(

        • What did they say? I also want to use amex offer but don't know which laptop to get.

          • @Modesty: They said ebay have there own pricing which they can't match but please try and let me know :)

  • Would this laptop be able to play Assetto Corsa Competizione?

  • Wow top specs. Great value!

    • Screen colour accuracy is low though

  • Any 2 in 1 laptop with less than $1300 available on their eBay store for basic gaming like roblox? Not sure how to search this on their store. Thinking to get one for the kid. Thanks.

    • this laptop would be more than enough for roblox

      • Does this one has touchscreen? Kid get use to touch on tablet. Thanks.

        • +3

Kids need to learn how to actually interact with a computer one day, and not just poke at it with their fingers.

          • @studentl0an: Yeah. Need to let her learn to use mouse and keyboard slowly with the option to use touch so she won't get discouraged or she may stick with tablet instead.

            • -3

@YYY: "She may stick with the tablet instead"

Hrmmm. I'm sure she would also would prefer to eat junk food all day but it's your responsibility to encourage good skills/lifestyle as a parent. I think you should take the tablet away if you think it's impairing her abilities to learn, and encourage her to learn keyboard and mouse by rewarding good behavior.

Being able to interact with a computer is a very important skill for kids to learn.

              • +4

@studentl0an: You may have missed the point on my post. I was looking to advise on a 2 in 1 laptop not parenting. There are different ways to teach kids as a parent. Using a 2 in 1 laptop doesn't mean to discourage her from using the mouse or keyboard. It will provide a less frustrated but fun way to use both modes in between. She is currently using her brother 2 in 1 laptop and seem to enjoy using both modes just like her brother. Enjoyment will encourage them to explore things further by themselves. I don't want to buy a non-touch laptop just to collecting dust later while she continue to use her brother laptop or her tablet. You just believe there is a matter of urgency for her to learn how to use a mouse or keyboard. Mouse and keyboard are not the only options to interact with the computer. Voice, touch, face etc are popular options too. They just need to expose to these options to as many as possible. :)

                • +1

@YYY: this laptop doesn't have touch screen, id actually recommend for you to find a 2 in 1 laptop. This laptop is more geared towards older teenage gamers on a tight budget.

              • +1

@studentl0an: Whoa, easy there tiger. That is a quite a quantum leap of equating keyboard and mouse usage with good skills/lifestyle and parenting

                • +1

@WarChief: Based on the moniker I seriously doubt s/he has kids.

    • +1

I think pretty much any Yoga variant would run Roblox and satisfy your need of 2 in 1

  • Bought one for the missus for chrissy. Thanks OP.

  • This review states no display port using USB-C connector. Does that mean you can't use dual monitors with this laptop?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK6vNLbEFNY

    • Going via the Lenovo page :
      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-3-serie…

      Ports :
      * 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1
      * 1 x USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 1
      * 1 x HDMI 2.0
      * 1 x Ethernet (RJ-45)
      * 1 x headphone/mic jack

So it can only display to 1 external monitor.

As this is an AMD based laptop you wont be getting Thunderbolt, so what you need to look for is USB 3.2 and DisplayPort.

An example of the tech specs when looking for this on the Lenovo web site will have the port cable of this is :
      * USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 1 (power delivery + Display Port)

      • Yeh so you can't hook up to 2 external monitors?

        • No, can only connect via the HDMI port to 1 external monitor

  • Lenovo Legions with Intel's here.

  • how is this as a laptop for high school kid. They want something that is drop proof?
(and preferably touch screen, but he can use a mouse)

    • +1

I think the battery life will be borderline at best. My kids school asks for 6 hours battery life minimum and this laptop just reaches that when only watching youtube (https://youtu.be/DeQrXflRbg8?t=664). If they did anything else I think it could dip below 6 hours pretty easily. Therefore I'm looking at the Legion 5 with 60 or 80Wh batteries instead.

Oh, and very, very few laptops are drop proof, so I think they're kidding themselves there. But a god quality case helps.

      • +1

This is a gaming laptop. Unfortunately the 45wh battery will get you about 5 to 6 hrs of use at best. The CPU is over kill for school work. Only laptops that had significant resistance to dropping were the really expensive Panasonic Toughbooks from years ago.

        • yeah, I think they mean get aluminum frame vs the cheapest plastic frame

My lenovo T-series has had many drops and carried around by the open screen, it is rock solid (not rock proof) in terms of bumps and dumps.

The gaming add on was a nice reprieve at home from 2 gaming PCs between 3 boys. :)

but yeah, weight, battery life (and maybe screen brightness) seems to be a challenge.

  • Hi Guys,

Would this run COD Warzone with ease (even if it is on low settings).

    • lol yes it will, on high settings no problem

      • Thanks, sorry I don't know much about laptops / computers and play on my Xbox One, been thinking of getting a gaming PC but this laptop could be better and portable.

        :)

        • More details here on the 1650 ti

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9kTTcha91U

if you want a pure gaming laptop, maybe spend the extra cash on a laptop that has a 1660 or 2060

        • Well AMD makes the tech that powers the Xbox One and PS4 under the hood. Both next gen consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X use the same AMD tech as the processor in this computer.

  • Good gracious… Lenovo, 300 nits. That's the number you should be putting on anything that isn't bargain-basement laptops. Also, the colour accuracy is awful!

  • Should I pull the trigger, or would it be a good idea to wait till Black Friday?

    • They have been hovering around this price for a while. $1105 I think is the lowest it's been. You could wait, but you never know.

  • +3

So I bought this on launch and have been pretty happy with it overall but here are some of my opinions:

    Pros:

    • Pretty good specs overall. 4600H is plenty fast. 3200/3300 Cb20 score reference.
    • Plays AAA games fine (dota2, CoDWZ, CSgo) see crevat on temps below
    • The Build is understated and actually quite nice. Not very gamery.

    Cons:

    • Screen brightness is really average. Im in a pretty dimly lit room with brightness on max and its pretty weak sauce. No probs ar gaming at night though but yeah, 300nits would be heaps better
    • Battery is tiny. You'll need to carry the charger with you for anything more than a few hrs. It does have fast charging though
    • Big one is the thermal solution (not the temps themselves) and along with the screen i think this is where Lenovo cut corners or didnt think it through. While temps are kept pretty much under control, the fans at full tilt sounds like a jet engine. I have replaced the TIM with thermogrizzly stuff as well as put thermal constraints on the cpu but, without actually being able to directly control the fans or specifically set your own fan profile, its always going to be an issue.

Overall would I probally would have gone with the Legion 5 with the 4800H but it wasnt available, but the Gaming 3 does it all with shortcomings which are only as bad as I make them out to be.

If anyone does get one though and gets annoyed with the fans then like i said, there are a few 'solutions' you can play around with*:

*do so at your own risk

  • How does it compare to the other deal Lenovo E14 Gen 2? It has similar high level specs specs.

  • +1

I can see why they call this a "gaming" laptop

With a 250 nits screen the only place you'd be able to see the display is in a dark room with lights turned off

    • +1

Wow, they really know their audience then as that's perfect for most gamers!

  • +1

Hey OP i think you've unleashed something here…
    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-gaming-…
i dont really think theres much of a difference between 1650 and 16050 ti

    • +2

You're aware that's on the US site?

      • +3

Should i facepalm myself now or later ?
im not even allowed to downvote myself!

        • I also don't think the 16050ti will be out for quite awhile yet ;P

  • +1

Thanks OP, I have bought this - really just need the machine to run PC games that aren't available or practical on console. Seems a good level to get in at.

  • Anyone know if the ebay plus member ship gets you 50 dollars off ontop of the discounted price? $1143.20 to $1093.20?

Im thinking of biting the bullet on this one. Looks like it will handle destiny 2 pretty well, and with the 120hz will be good enough for crucible PVP.

Anyone have this laptop? or know if it is stable with Destiny 2? Thanks OP. Best laptop deal ive seen in months.

  • For anyone looking at a few different Lenovo options, I just got the notification that this has shipped after ordering yesterday - big difference from the Lenovo online store that gave me a 4-5 week timeline.
