Why not buy from Google store with six months Netflix?

    • That Netflix credit can't be used if you're paying for Netflix via an overseas country, so you're better off buying the device outright for $88 and continuing to get super-cheap Netflix:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/566367

      • or return the device for $99 and pocket the nf credit (sell to a family member/friend etc).

Btw got Tidal Hi-fi via Argentina for AR$138 = AUD $2.40
        Costs $24/month here.
Almost considering spotify too for portable use (fitbit etc), haven't looked into it.

It's a shame YouTube music is so rubbish (and no cast button from desktop), Google Play music was great!

For those keen, I created homescreen links to Live Channels and Google Play store, available here:

…and there's also a copy of Wolf Launcher there, that can give a minimalist look and feel to the Chromecast:

    • Any used the device to sideload STB EMU for IPTV.

Has anyone found a workaround to to enter channels numbers as the remote does not have numeric keypads

  • This or the Xiaomi Mi TV Box S for the same price?

  • Waiting for price to go down to $50 without Netflix 🙂

    • Hey, you're in luck! I've just finished my time machine that will take anyone to 2025 where I estimate the CC price will be down to $50.

Unfortunately my machine is still very slow. For now, it'll take us about 5 years of to get to 2025, and it can't go backwards in time yet :(

  • at the risk of being repetitive, why should I get this over my smart tv with inbuilt apps suck as Netflix and YouTube that does the job fine (referring to my 3 year old Sony Bravia)

This does a great job at pulling together content from across streaming services. So for me, I've got subscriptions to Netflix and Amazon Prime, and then there's also access to the 5 FTA streaming services. This pulls content from across all of those services to provide recommendations to me - it all just feels super easy and the UI is fantastic. I love mine, having just upgraded from the first gen CC.

    • I found the wifi and apps play up from time to time on mine, and slow. Agree not 100% necessary but it's a good device and nicer experience (my tv isn't even 4k). Helps with automation and voice control and like the remote.

works well GTV-Soundbar-TV with HDMI ARC ( I had to find a sound bar with hdmi not only optical)

  • Can you turn your TV on and off with this?

    • +1

Yes (unless you had a very unusual unsupported brand)

      • Thanks mate, follow up question, can the remote control tv channel and volume, basically so I can throw out my TV remote?

        • +1

Think you'd still need it. You can control volume power and input. Can reassign some buttons of various devices not sure about that.
Plenty Of phone apps for remote control anyway

        • +1

Its only a small remote with a few buttons. Not a chance you would want to use it to replace your TV remote.
Buy yourself a Harmony remote to do ALL if you want to reduce clutter.

          • @Borg: Yeah it's handy enough for the features abovementioned, particularly if you mainly use the Google TV and stream free to air. You basically don't need the soundbar remote unless want to change sound settings

          • @Borg: Thanks all, I actually have a harmony remote, it’s one with a screen, I find it super slow… prefer just a single simple remote.

            Thanks for the feedback!

  • Can I get AppleTV streaming onto my TV with one of these devices?

    • Yes.

You'll need to sideload it as it's not available on the Google Play store.

      • What does “sideload” mean? Does it mean cast AppleTV from within a chrome browser running on the Chromecast or not?

        • Sideload = One downloads the .APK file from an alternate source (which contains the app in question) as it is not available in the App store.
Probably best to search Google for "How to Sideload to Google TV? You will find instructions and best methods on many sites. It's not hard to sideload.

@Borg: Thank you! I never stop learning from the greater collective!!

  • Does anyone know if casting from your phone using YouTube actually casts in the quality that you have chosen? My current chromecast v3 defaults to a lower quality on my 4K tv, it does not honour the quality that you set in the YouTube app.

Also, how does screen mirroring look? Again using my CC v3 the quality displayed on my 4K TV in very poor, def not even FHD and this is through my 5G home Wifi.

    • I’ve had similar issues, I find if you open up the video on the phone app, set it to whatever quality you want, then you cast it you’ll be able to force the same quality.

I have 100mb nbn always cast at 480 off the bat, but never a issue when I force it.

      • " … I find if you open up the video on the phone app, set it to whatever quality you want, then you cast it you’ll be able to force the same quality. ", I read this same info at some point. Not really preferable but a work around I suppose.

So my question is I wonder if this new CC will default to the video quality that the media is playing on ie: 4K (if available) on a 4K TV, FHD on a FHD TV etc… OR if it honors the actual quality set when using the YouTube app.

  • This or the Nvidia Shield TV?

    • Depends on your usage. The shield comes in 2 versions and they would cost about 3 or 4 times the cost of the Google tv. If gaming is important to you then the shield will be better but if your only concern is streaming for services such as Netflix, Disney+ etc, then this is more than enough and comes with most to all the main features such as Dolby Vision and 4k support, Chromecast etc and from a well known brand.

It's beyond me why you have to unlock your phone to say turn off living room tv (with the google tv being that device), I'm pretty sure if it was said from the room with the nest mini it would turn off. Any clues?
Also have to get another smart power board, run out of bloody outlets for always on or need another master.. never ends and meant to make thing easier /rant over.

  • Has anybody successfully installed Mobdro?

  • I just got one but binge won’t install on it. Says it won’t work in my country but I’m in Brisbane.
    Can anyone help?
