        Great screen, great stereo speakers, great headphone jack, with water resistance, SD card slot, and wireless charging (my bad got it confused with the 1 2).

        This is literally my perfect phone. Even the price is fair vs Samsung and Apple flagships… but the lack of local availability/support is… ugh!

          I have been eyeing this phone but as you said local unavailability is a major drawback. I think Sony should relaunch it's smartphone business here as I'm sure there have fans.

    My last 3 phones were Sony's. Xperia Play, Xperia Z2, XZ Premium. Then they went and gave up our market.

    Not going to pursue them, already moved on to Pixel and love it, but very disappointed in Sony. It really is typical of them to give up unless its an absolute hit like their Bravia tv's and mainline Playstation consoles (outside of which I have no faith in them to support).

    I've seen Sony phones around the place. I know Samsung and Apple had them beat, but isn't some market share better than none? Especially for an electronics company? The phones already exist, just send smaller allocations to us to satisfy those who enjoy using them, but alas, no.

      You spoke my mind. The Xperia 1 ii and this phone are such a marvellous devices but unfortunate that they aren't available here anymore. I'm surprised even in US this phone is not available until Dec despite launching many months earlier.

      My last three phones , Xperia Play, Xperia Z2, XZ Premium, lots of tiny issues , over heating, lagging, mic issue then I went to Huawei. No such a issue other than war games between China and US.

      I was on the same boat. I was a loyal customer of Sony phone until they abandoned Australian market. Couldn't stand Samsung's phone so I went with Google Pixel

      I owned z2, z3, z3+, z5 - pretty loyal huh, but I must say that despite having great design (thin, square, light - almost don't feel it in a pocket) and an amazing camera and being water/dust proof, all of them suffered from overheating, especially z5 - I couldn't record full hd 60fps video for longer periods of time and if it was a hot day, navigation could just freeze, while I drive or phone could just shut down leaving me not knowing where to go on an important crossroad or highway - and it would not turn on until it cools down (what might be problematic, cause it is still noon and I had to turn on AC in my car only so that phone could work), eventually one day it went to a loop, froze, became hot as hell, did shut down and never came back (motherboard was fried according to several different repair shops). And that's why z5 was my last Sony phone - I had to part ways with the brand, whose flagship at the time had such major issues. Now I am with LG and good so far.

      Nope. Compared to the Xperia 1 II, the 5 II has a higher refresh rate screen, but they removed wireless charging.

    I have a Xperia 1 ii and it's an impressive phone but it only offers basic 3G and 4G network connectivity with our local networks. The same will also apply to the 5 ii,

    • 5G network access gets blocked by Telstra after 2 days.
    • No VoLTE and VoWiFi - Phone is not supported by our
    networks.

        Not really sure why it's getting blocked. I've asked Telstra support and they don't know either. Seems to be some sort of automatic block from the network.

        There's no whitelist. According to Telstra FAQs (bottom of the page), you can bring your own 5G device and use it on their network.

      It's the 'compact' version of their flagship phone the Xperia 1 II, as stated in someone elses post, this one comes with a higher refresh rate screen at a lower resolution but doesn't have wireless charging. Apart from that it's practically the same phone.

    Jeez, who the heck comes up with the names of Sony's flagship phones. It seems so random and confusing

    I'm not surprised they aren't doing too well, they've been rehashing the same design since the inception of their first android phone (they've seemed to end that trend with this iteration). Not many people are too keen on buying a phone that looks like their last.

    In my eyes, about the only thing going for it is the headphone jack. You would hope that sony phones would have the best camera, since they make all the best phone lens on the market

    Sony have generally provided the worst, almost non-existent software support/updates for their phones & tablets.

    Surprised they bother releasing anything new, or that anyone would pay the asking price for one of their models.

      Not sure I've never bought from either. I've purchased from both Becextech and Expansys and not had any issues, just a long wait for delivery which is expected.

        ok thx for that, I am rather apprehensive about buying a $1+k from some shop on the other side of the world……

        right now, I am leaning towards to either Kogan (yeah I know) or Mymobile, as they are supposed to be a local business, so if something goes wrong, at least I might have some recourse, or is that just my wishful thinking?

          I just bought it on a CC that has insurance. So if the deal goes belly up I just get them to sort it out. Kogan do have them if it gives you peace of mind just buy through them.
