will this work on optus network?

    • I would have thought the word "UNLOCKED" may have been a clue

      .. yes it will.

      • +1

its just that some phones work on telstra but not optus networks. the unique mobiles website show that it is not compatible with "yes" 900mhz network… thanks for the info!

        • okay so, specifically, if you're asking about the 'yes' band, perhaps not compatible with it, but certainly works on their other 'normal' bands

          Band

          GSM / EDGE Band 850 / 900 / 1,800 / 1,900
          3G Band 850 / 2,100MHz

is their 'yes' band the equivalent to telstra's 'nextg' band?

    • +1

      Yes !

      • +4

Err, actually, I think the correct answer is "partially".

It will work for GSM, but for 3G for Optus you want UMTS 2100 MHz in metro areas and UMTS 900 MHz in rural and regional areas.

Since this phone is 850 / 2100, you will not get 3G with Optus in regional or rural areas, because this phone variant does not support UMTS 900 Mhz.

I'm not an expert though, I've just been dealing with this stuff for family trying to buy a phone that they can use here and overseas.

For Australia, you want 3G support for 850, 900 and 2100, and then you can use all the networks.

thanks nickj, I think that was the answer I was after. I'll be more specific next time with my initial question.

      • Yes I did mention that before editing it off…, but later found out Optus 2G & 2.5G will run fine on EDGE/GPRS (900Mhz/1800Mhz), 3G is 2100Mhz/900Mhz(DUAL Band) HSDPA/HSDPA+ and only 2100Mhz will work, but in terms of connectivity you will still achieve 96% coverage and either 2G/2.5G most places 3G, same towers !

    • It will work with Optus but can only use their 2100mhz network for 3G Data.

Better with Telstra and Voda which is 850/2100mhz for 3G.

  • Hmm pretty good phone for this price, yes?

Please don't use URL shorteners when linking the actual deal. It creates a number of problems, including:
    - difficulty when searching for deals from the unique mobiles domain.
    - MBC status for the particular site is not automatically recognised.
    - it ends up looking like you are trying to mask a referral URL.
    Please amend, thanks.

    • Edited - thanks

A VERY Good reason exists ! OZBARGAIN decided to BAN the uniquemobiles website link, bcoz "their offers weren't getting attention", hence the ONLY way around this according to my Genius brain was to use a url shortner, of which they also banned tinyurl…, NOW I'm the BAD guy for posting a BARGAIN ?! lol

      • lol ok, but then bring it to a mods attention so they can fix the link - see you link has been corrected. Back in the day I wanted to post a COTD link but it was banned, so I put in a dummy link and then requested the mod to change it to the proper link, which he did once he saw I was posting a genuinely good deal. Never said you were the 'bad' guy :P in fact this deal ain't too bad for what is essentially a lower spec sgs1, but as mentioned below, liquid metal was much better value though now unavailable..

        • If I had known URL shorteners was something people didn't like, I would have told a mod.
I assumed as long as the deal is RIGHT, no one cares… ;)

  • I bought it - thanks

    • now all i need is a laptop bargain

  • Guys, don't you think 150MB internal storage is just to small? Even Acer MT with 512MB still puts us in tight storage budget.

    • 150MB or 512MB is still too small, I have to root my Acer MT, installed custom ROM and Link2SD. Now I have around 100MB free internal storage.

      • Yes I did the same thing as well. Just wonder with 150MB how could they put Gingerbread on it?
Off topic a bit, did you upgrade your MT to 2.3.6?

        • Yes I updated to the official new firmware, installed t&l Metal 2.3.6 and the new o/c kernel.

    • +1

The way manufacturers quote internal storage space is inconsistent.

Acer Liquid Metal - 512MB is the total size (which it then did a ~50/50 split) on system / app partitions - which means you get at most 220MB data storage (and some of the data storage will be used for system apps temp data / cache file) - so you end up having about 150MB usable space left to the end user.

Samsung quoted 150MB… but that's the amount of storage available to end user.

Basically, the two phones would have the about the same amount of phone storage space available to the user. However, other than that, Acer Liquid Metal is better (hardware wise) in every other way.

      • Acer MT is better with higher resolution and it can be o/c to 1500mhz but the camera is not good.

Their advertised internal storage really confused me.

        • oooh… where did you grab the 1500mhz o/c kernal? any issues with running after installing eg hangs etc?

        • awesome, thanks for that. I like how the app allows for auto slow down rather than drain the battery with continuous full bore 1.5ghz. On that note, have you noticed excessive battery drain running at full bore?

        • I tried with the MT voltage control comes with it and I cannot tell what speed it was actually running but I felt the phone a bit warm and not sure about battery drain :p

  • How does this phone compare to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57194 the LG optimus ?

  • "One major disappointment, and it was a complete surprise for us, was that the Ace is incompatible with Adobe Flash"

    Oh thats not good…

    • Fairly common at this price point AFAIK. Also worth bearing in mind that with the modest specs, flash would likely involve a noticeable performance hit! ;)

      • that's one of the reasons why Adobe has officially dropped flash for mobiles! some say this vindicates Steve Jobs but i say it might have something to do with the 750 people who got the chop recently, bring on HTML5…
        re review,
        Main disadvantages
        Dismal QVGA video recording @15fps
No shutter key for the camera
No support for Adobe Flash in the web browser
        No ambient light sensor
No DivX/Xvid video support out of the box

        that's a crappy camera with only 15fps!

        • there are TONS of update/hacks/patches to get 720p on this 5MP camera ! ;)
