Chromecast with Google TV & 6 Months of Netflix ($95.94 Worth of Credit) for $139.99 @ Google Store

5040

Google just announced the Chromecast with Google TV for $99, but a little less known is a deal that allows you to tack on 6 months of Netflix ($95.94 worth of credit) for a grand total of $139.99, bringing the effective price of the Chromecast to $44.05.

Seems to be a long-running deal (through to December 31, 2021).

Tips:

  • If you're a Google One subscriber, you'll get 3% back in store credit if you're on a 200 GB plan, or 10% back in store credit if you're on a 2 TB or higher plan.
  • You can purchase three of these bundles per Google account.
  • The deal is available to both new and existing Netflix subscribers.
  • The 6 months of Netflix offer is based on a Standard plan ($15.99/month). Netflix works off a dollar-based credit model, so if you're on a Basic plan ($10.99/month), you'll actually get 8.73 months worth of credit, but if you're on a Premium plan ($19.99/month), you'll get 4.80 months worth of credit.
  • If you've redeemed the Netflix offer, but end up returning the Chromecast, Google will refund you $99; meaning you'll still have scored $95.94 worth of Netflix credit for $40.99.

Note: Previously out of stock, and now back in stock! If it goes out of stock again, keep refreshing the page as Google has progressively added stock on previous occasions.

    • mine had that date but now just says delayed

    • My ETA is the same 18/19. It now says delayed.

      • yeah same

    • Mine had an ETA of 18/19th and is now also marked as delayed.
Pretty frustrating given that we've had to wait so long already (mine was ordered on 9th Oct).
I read somewhere that Google offered customers credit when Pixel phones were delayed at some point in the past. Hopefully they will do the same for us.

      • (mine was ordered on 9th Oct).

A bit strange I ordered on 20Oct and received on 17Nov.

        • Yours must be white

        • That is odd. I ordered the white (snow) version too.
Looks like I'll have to follow up with Google.

          • +1

@drongodave: The one with Netflix or without?

            • @superforever: I am waiting on a white with Netflix. I ordered start of November.
Hasn't budged for estimated arrival of next week.

            • @superforever: I ordered with Netflix. Is this the same as you?

            • @superforever: it's very odd, as the non-netflix ver would have shipped immediately by the look of it

              • @G-rig: Because you only get the code after you set up the chromecast, the Netflix deal must be tied to the serial number of the unit which seems why the job Netflix can ship sooner

                • @joshr1pp3r: Fair enough, hopefully still works by then and they don't stop people sending it back and pocketing the nf credit

          • @drongodave: same here, white + Netflix with ETA 18/19th now marked delayed.

  • Since new Google TV needs to use it own power adapter, can't use the TV USB port, how to turn it off? Don't want to have it on all the time.

I can turn off my old Chromecast when I turn off my TV.

    • The remote has an on off button.
Probably remains on standby, guess you'd want it to fit automation etc, just like the convenience of tv on standby.. otherwise turn everything off at the wall or look into smart plugs etc

      • Well I suspect you know the answer i.e. turn it off at the socket.
It has its plus side being on. Assuming one has other Google devices around, one can say "Hey Google, turn on TV" and it turns everything on (TV, Amp/Soundbar etc).

      • The remote has an on off button.

During setup that was configured for TV on/off.

        • @superforever: Are you asking for the purpose of Power Consumption (wasted power)?

          • @Borg: Yes also my old Chromecast was quite hot.

            • +1

@superforever: I just did a read of it over a period of only 5 mins i.e. not a long term read.

When TV "OFF" (as in not casting) runs between 0.96w and 1.16w (let's say avg 1.1watt per hour) | 26.4 watts a day | 9.64kWh a year. I suspect less and avg would be below 1watt as will quieten down.

When "ON" and playing seems to be around 1.7watts | 40.8 watts a day | 14.89kWh a year. Not a lot in it. Am surprised how little it uses considering it's running Wifi and Bluetooth.

Heat = I have being watching Netfilx and then Kayo for last few hours and it's only luke warm. My Chromecast v2 did get very warm over time so the Chomecast TV is much cooler.

              • @Borg: Yeah don't think it would be enough money to worry about the power consumption given the intent is the functionality if you do have other Google home devices/phone and use voice commands.

Its good turning the gtv on and the tv and sound bar come on too, and only really need that remote. You may want to look into those master slave powerboards that turns all other stuff off when not in use (if you can still get them), as smart plug would be on standby anyway (but was thinking of trying one in conjunction).

Most people would get solar off they want to save power but not always possible

              • @Borg: I am just worry the Google TV getting too hot like Chromecast and may die one day.

Seem like it did gone into sleep mode when the TV was off, today when I turned on my TV it said no signal until I press the Google TV remote to wake it up.

BTW, I only have a FHD Samsung TV with HDMI ARC and a Panasonic Home Theatre system, so I don't think I can get surround sound, right?

                • @superforever: Not sure yet about power stuff or how hot it gets , have it plugged into The soundbar input. Any of the remotes work to wake off standby, wouldn't know if it's worth putting any of them Or all on a smart powerboard

                  • @G-rig: Apparently a tv on standby only uses ~$5 a year of power. Worth it to not have to turn on at the wall all the time i reckon

                • @superforever: btw a chromecast would be designed to be able to be left powered all the time

  • Dupe. Disregard.

  • Anyone tried load Stremio?

  • Has anyone managed to get Foxtel working/loaded on this device?
Tried sideloading FoxtelGO but it keeps crashing

  • Just wondering if there is any kind of onscreen display showing what audio is being decoded/used when watching something? Not sure of the quality coming out of the soundbar and content (Samsung Q70T True Dolby ATMOS & DTS:X). Wouldn't mind the rear wireless surround speakers, not too expensive but not too fussed.

    Cheers

    • Might be a developer option in Android

      • NFI, but if you had an AV Receiver you know when it's dolby digital or something at least.
Will have to find some titles that may be.

  • Placed an order yesterday. ETA 07/08 Jan. :(

  • Ordered a white one on the 20th October
Just says delayed, no indication when it will be sent. Would have thought it would be a pretty safe bet for an Xmas present. Google usually stick to their shipping dates from past experience. Not so sure with this one.

  • Worth asking support about the delay or just waste of time?

    • Let us know what they say :P

I asked Google nest Mini and it just Said something about supply shortages, or Can Google it (ironic I know)

    • I asked why it was a delay (as the shipping time was so far in the future) and got nowhere.
As it has been delayed you might get a different answer.

      • Just buy One anywhere and return the device when it finally turns up like I did..and keep the Netflix credit

  • Received a $10 Google Store offer for accessories and devices that pair with Chromecast
Perhaps because it's taking so long? Guess they know I've connected one.
Is the ethernet adaptor worth it? Got the device sitting right next to the router.

Don't have a 4k telly or anything but may as well for $20, good for the future and nothing else to use the voucher for.
Edit: Done, looks like it comes as an AC adapter so you would free up a usb C adapter out of it too.

    • I don't think you will free up any usb C.
Chromecast has only one usb C and you use it for either power alone or ethernet + power with the adaptor you bought.

      • Ah, sorry i mean the Ac adapter, not the actual cable (seems to be worth a bit or 10$ anyway at least)

        • Ah ha~ got you now. Yeah, I think it's good to have one if you prefer ethernet connection.

    • How did you receive the $10? Email? Complaint?

      • +1

Nope didn't complain just received it a fair while after ordering the Chromecast

  • Is there any way to output surround to optical TOSLINK?

    • No. The unit itself is a HDMI dongle and has no Inputs/Outputs other than for power. If your TV has TOSLINK one could go from there to e.g. AMP.

      • HDMI dongle and has no Inputs/Outputs other than for power.

Yeah I understand, just thinking any other way to extract surround from HDMI to TOSLINK.

If your TV has TOSLINK one could go from there to e.g. AMP.

Doing that now but no surround, I think may be my TV.

        • Plug the Chromecast TV into your Surround Sound system if in fact both have HDMI in and the Out to TV?

      • I got a soundbar that has a HDMI input for that reason, and treat the Chromecast as the source and the tv as a display. Could do the same with an av receiver of it has the inputs. Just means always need it on.

Still no idea what audio format is actually being decoded/played.

  • Mine arrived today

    • when did you order?

      • 20 Oct

        • Cool. Thanks. I guess I have to wait another month then. :)

  • +1

Got mine today as well. Setup and quite enjoy it. I already have Youtube Premium, Youtube Music, Amazon Prime account. So I found the TV interface quite good.

I've also received my offer of 6 months Netflix as well. It is tied to my gmail account that you logged into Chromecast. However I haven't redeemed it. As I don't have active netflix account, I wonder if I can setup Netflix on another country to get "more value" out of my credit?

    • That's good to know, I'm going to order one and my Netflix account is attached to my dad's account so will have to order on his.

      • You can order it on any account and once received activate the Netflix on your dad's.

    • I wonder if I can setup Netflix on another country to get "more value" out of my credit?

No has been mentioned, it is AUD credit for AU accounts only

  • Got mine today too. However you can't redeem the Netflix on an account that's paid via iTunes.
You can if you cancel the account and reactivate with the redemption, but you're no longer able to pay via iTunes as an option.

    shipped finally yesterday
    hopefully free to send back

  • Just ordered one, estimated delivery date 4-7 Dec

    • Dec? Did you order white one?

      • Yep white one. Actually got it on Wednesday so earlier than promised. It’s a great product I love it, coming from a Chromecast Gen 1 the difference is stark

        • That's good. I am also waiting for mine. Should arrive early next week. :) Had to cancel blue and reordered white. Will love it for sure.

        • Even Gen 2 was a big step up from gen 1 :-)

  • Ordered one yesterday, the white one says it will be here around the 2nd or 3rd of December

    • +1

      Thanks for letting us know.
I cancelled blue one that had ETA of 7 Jan, and again ordered white one, which now says 7-8 Dec.

  • Received mine today. Only 20 days wait.
It refuses to see my 5GHz wifi. I should just buy the ethernet adaptor.

    • +1

I remember reading a comment that said changing channel of ur 5g wifi did the trick.

    • +1

      channel to 40 actually

      • I tried it on channel 40 and got 5GHz. But would rather not leave it on that. Although 2.4GHz became flaky with the connection, so I returned it.
Same problem with a new one - no 5GHz unless it was on channel 40.
I received the $10 off voucher from Google as above so bought the ethernet adaptor.

        • +1

Broadcasts both fine i think. I got the ethernet anyway, can't hurt?

          • @G-rig: I am using the ethernet and it works well.

            • +1

@Sammy2000: Fkyeah, 20$ (I also go $10 off somehow so it's seamless pal

  • Going to Netflix Premium, actually see if Dolby Atmos / DTS:X actually work on this samsung soundbar.
With an older TV I don't have a 4k but I don't think the tv should really affect the sound if using external soundbar etc? it's the last link in my HDMI ARC chain.

The rear satellite speakers dont seem to be doing anything now, have been stuffing around trying to pair again etc. just hard to know what sound is being actually decoded etc.

EDIT: Seemed to be a lose wire. Atmos displays on the soundbar when eneabled so that's working at least. I don't read into it too much with these cheap audio products, the overall speaker quality would make more difference but it's a simple setup compared to the AV home theatre days.

  • Does anyone know why Netflix movies etc would change from Dolby Atmos to 5.1 halfway through a movie?

Setup is Chromecast Google TV -> Soundbar (HDMI) -> TV (HDMI ARC)
The tv is an older sony so no Atmos or 4K, perhaps the ARC is checking the audio decoding format?

Bit odd, but wont be paying for Ultra HD if it doesn't work properly.

    Thanks,

  • How do you get the Netflix credit?
I have received the device? Is it in the packaging?

    • +1

Once you finish setting it up they will email a link to redeem the credit (can be applied to any Netflix acct)

      • So won't matter if I redeem this at the end of the month?

        • I haven't activated it myself but according to the T&Cs in the email it expires 1 March 2022

Please do not forward this email. • @uggugg: You could have just copied/pasted that portion i.e. it says…….."follow the instructions to apply the offer value to a Netflix account by 1 March 2022" :-)

  • So I clicked on the link and have successfully applied the Netflix offer to my account. Does anyone know where in Netflix account settings I can view the applied credit?

    • +2

I clicked account on the app and it took me to membership and billing, half way down it says I am in credit until June 2021.

  • -1

So still no VPN tricks to add to overseas Netflix account? Haven't opened the package could still send the whole thing back, but may as well try and palm Off the credit to a relative/friend which was the original idea.

For newer TV's its a bit if a double up, but turns older ones into a snappy experience. will still use as it's got Atmos, and the remote is nice. This New TV isn't in the list though, for some Of The Remote settings (Eko)

  • Can you redeem 2 Netflix offers on the same account if you buy 2?

    • ………………the T&C's state: Limit of three per customer/Google Account!

      • Thanks, by the way my cc was charged $4.19 extra for overseas transaction as google charged as Google GB. I contacted them by email but nothing yet. Misleading information on website, no mention it will be charged by overseas entity.
        Just be aware…

        • That's a charge from your bank. I used a NAB account and no extra charge

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: True, but google should have disclosed it will charge from an overseas entity so I could have used a different card. We buy here and the money goes overseas and no tax paid in Australia

            • @blueskywalker: I wasn't charged anything. If your account is linked to Google Australia and not an overseas account then you should have been paying in AU$. Are you sure your Google Account is local and if so call Google Support as there are not Bank fees.

              • @Borg: Yes it is linked to Google Australia but item charged by Google GB.

        • On the checkout page it says "Your bank may charge a cross border or currency exchange fee". I paid by paypal and didn't get charged a fee.

        • contacted my bank who also charged me and they reversed the fee

  • Looks like the kids have already broken our remote (water damage). 🤬

Can buy a new one for $29.99 apparently…

    • +1

I never use the included remote and just use my TVs remote. Having said that I don't use the Voice Assist part which obviously my TV remote would not include. Dry it out and call Google for a warrany replacement!
